Het Alhambra, gelegen op de Sabica-heuvel, is een Andalusische Palatijnse stad. De naam komt van de roodachtige kleur van de muren, afkomstig van de klei van het land zelf (Al-Hamra in het Arabisch). Het wordt gevormd door een groep paleizen, tuinen en forten waar binnen de stad Granada zelf een citadel was, de belangrijkste functie was om te dienen als accommodatie voor de vorst en het hof van het Nasrid-koninkrijk Granada. Er zijn ook christelijke nederzettingen, zoals het paleis van Karel V en de kerk van Santa Maria, gebouwd op de top van de oude moskee. Het is een van de meest bezochte monumenten in Spanje en werd in 1984 uitgeroepen tot werelderfgoed. Geniet van het bezoek met een officiële gids.
Het Alcazaba is het oudste deel van het Alhambra, uit het Arabisch: القصبة al-qaṣbah (citadel) was een versterkte omheining van stedelijk karakter, wiens functie was om te dienen als koninklijke residentie voor Mohamed I totdat de paleizen klaar waren, van daaruit zijn functie was puur militair.
De Nasrid-paleizen, zijn een paleiscomplex van het Alhambra van Granada gevormd door twee onafhankelijke paleizen, het paleis van Comares en het paleis van de leeuwen, en bijgebouwen, Mexuar, de bouw dateert uit het eerste derde deel van de veertiende eeuw. Het Alcázar of "Qasr al-Sultán" was het paleisgebied van het Alhambra, de kern van het Nasrid-koninkrijk. In dit gebied woonden de sultans, naast het ontvangen van een publiek, de zaken van de overheid verdrijven of de administratie van de rechtbank beheren.
Het paleis van Carlos V is een bouw uit de Renaissance van de architect Pedro Machuca. Het paleis is uniek in zijn stijl en vormt een vierkant met een cirkelvormige binnenplaats erin. Het is het meest opmerkelijke werk van de Spaanse Renaissance.
De Generalife is de villa met tuinen die door de moslimkoningen van Granada wordt gebruikt als een toevluchtsoord en rustplaats. Het werd opgevat als een landelijke villa, waar siertuinen, boomgaarden en architectuur werden geïntegreerd in de nabijheid van het Alhambra. De naam die we aan het Generalife-complex geven, betekent letterlijk Yannat al-Arif: "The Architect's Garden", een toespeling op de tuinen en boomgaarden die groenten en fruit leverden aan het Nasrid-hof. Het paleis waarnaar we op weg zijn, ontworpen als een rustplaats voor de vorst, was wat de dichter Ibn al-Jayyab "het koninklijke huis van geluk" noemde.
El Partal integreert archeologische en architecturale overblijfselen die overeenkomen met palatinekamers. De naam in het Arabisch betekent portiek en verwijst naar de overblijfselen van de residentie van Sultan Muhammad III, de meest noordelijke en oudste. In deze tuinen kunt u de overblijfselen van verschillende paleizen zien, omdat dit gebied werd bewoond door de islamitische adel. Het belangrijkste was het paleis van Yusuf III, met een plattegrond vergelijkbaar met het paleis van Comares, helaas gesloopt in de 18e eeuw. De Partal Gardens zijn een ongelooflijke plek om te wandelen of te stoppen tijdens uw bezoek aan het Alhambra in Granada.

We expected more structure, details and interesting facts during this tour. The information was presented in a kind of semi random fashion. No supplemental materials (maps, floor plans, timeline diagrams were used). The guide was pretty unenthusiastic and just led us trhough Generalife, palaces and fortress with ability to take quick selfies. We expected much more especially after our free walking tour of the city that has offered all of the above.

Take a local bus from Granada town to the meeting point. Alhambra is on the top of the hill and the route is really steep. Nasrid palace is absolute gem so book it with the tour. Wear comfortable shoes as the tour lasts 3 hours.

I wish to warn all travelers about this agency. Their website is structured to appear among the top results on search engines, misleading users and effectively posing as the official channel. I purchased tickets for the Alhambra only to discover afterward that the price they charged is four times higher than the actual cost from the official vendor (Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife). Once on site, speaking with the staff at the official ticket office, I confirmed that I am not at all the first to fall into this trap and that the situation is unfortunately well known to everyone locally. I find it scandalous that these platforms are allowed to profit in this way by speculating on tourists' misinformation. If you want to visit the Alhambra, make sure to purchase only and exclusively from the official website of the Patronato to avoid this enormous unjustified extra expense. Stay away from it.

Not for people with walking disability. The organization is poor. Backwards and forwards. People sending you one way and then another. Not very friendly or helpful staff either. Poor signage when we saw any. Sandra, our guide was excellent
