Galway is een van de oudste steden van Ierland en is rijk aan geschiedenis en verhalen. Het thema van deze privéwandelervaring is de geschiedenis, het erfgoed en de cultuur van de stad, van haar Anglo-Normandische verleden tot de hedendaagse progressieve stad. Deze privérondleiding wordt gegeven door een Ierse Tourism professional. Het is een persoonlijke rondleiding en een ideale manier om de "Stad van de Stammen" uit de eerste hand te zien en te leren kennen. De volledige route laat u bezienswaardigheden verkennen, zoals de Galway Cathedral, Courthouse Square, Lynch's Castle, St. Nicholas' Church, het Quartier Latin, de Spaanse Parade en de Hall of the Red Earl archeologische site. Tours zijn vooral geschikt voor reizigers die houden van een aangename mix van geschiedenis en legende! (NB : Kortingskaarten voor de Sint-Nicolaaskerk zijn beperkt tot de ochtendtours van 10 uur)

Onze geaccrediteerde Gids ontmoet u bij de ingang aan de voorkant van het Hardiman Hotel op Eyre Square. Gids begeleidt u naar het centrale plein en geeft een kort overzicht van de rijke geschiedenis van Galway.
Onze geaccrediteerde Gids begeleidt u naar verschillende bezienswaardigheden en iconische gebouwen rond het plein. . De eerste stop op de route is het John F Kennedy Memorial We bezoeken historische plekken waaronder de oude Browne Doorway en de Quin-centenary Fountain en praten over de 14 - Tribes banners
We komen nu uit op Williams-gate St. en komen enkele monumentale gebouwen tegen, waaronder het elegante Browne Thomas-gebouw. We passeren ook juwelierswinkels die gespecialiseerd zijn in Galway's Claddagh-ring. als de tijd het toelaat, stoppen we bij het standbeeld van Oscar Wilde, een geschenk van Estland aan Ierland in 2004!
We gaan nu Eglinton Street in en passeren de Franciscan Friary-kerk aan de linkerkant. Deze oude kerk heeft een klein kerkhof aan de achterzijde dat in het midden van de 17e en het begin van de 18e eeuw een prominente begraafplaats was.
We gaan verder richting Courthouse Square, waar vroeger twee iconische gerechtsgebouwen stonden - een voor de provincie en een voor de stad. Eén blijft vandaag en het Stadhuis Theater is tegenover.
Verderop, vanaf de nieuw gebouwde voetgangersbrug over de rivier de Corrib, zal onze groep pauzeren om Europa's nieuwste stenen kathedraal, de kathedraal van Galway en de Franciscaanse kapel te bekijken.
Onze tourroute passeert dicht bij Bowling Green. Hier was het ouderlijk huis van mevrouw Nora Barnacle, die in vervlogen jaren een vooraanstaand Galwegiër was. Ze had een beroemde relatie met de Ierse schrijver James Joyce op 16 juni 1904, daarna bekend als Bloomsday!
De tour keert terug via Galway's populaire River Walk naar de belangrijkste stadsader. We komen aan bij een kruispunt met twee straten en het iconische Lynch's Castle-gebouw. Dit gebouw is het mooiste bewaard gebleven stadskasteel in Ierland. De machtige Lynch-clan was er ooit de eigenaar van. Je gids legt de geschiedenis van het gebouw, de toppen en rondellen uit.
De tour gaat verder door rechtsaf Church Lane in te gaan, ooit 'Dead Man's Lane' genoemd, waar begrafenissen overgingen op weg naar het oude kerkhof. We praten over het kerkhof van St. Nicolaas en gaan verder door Market St.
We komen aan bij de Sint-Niklaascollegiale kerk, begeleid door uw gids. Hij legt de geschiedenis uit van deze grootste middeleeuwse kerk die in Ierland voortdurend in gebruik is. Het werd oorspronkelijk gebouwd als een katholieke kerk, maar functioneert tegenwoordig als een protestantse kerk. In 1477 zou Christoffel Columbus hier hebben aanbeden voorafgaand aan zijn epische ontdekkingsreis! Er is ook veel te zien in dit oude gebouw en we bieden kortingskaarten aan voor deelname aan hun rondleidingen die van maandag tot en met vrijdag plaatsvinden. 11.00 en 14.00 uur en woensdag 12.00 en 15.00 uur.
Het Lynch Memorial-venster, opgericht in 1854, zit vol met legendes. De burgemeester van Galway, burgemeester Lynch, zou op deze locatie zijn eigen zoon hebben opgehangen!
We komen aan in High Street, een deel van het Quartier Latin van Galway en komen de iconische King's Head Pub tegen. Volgens de legende werd deze pubsite geschonken door Oliver Cromwell als betaling aan de beul van koning Charles I. Ook in deze straat komen we langs het beroemde Naughton House, ooit eigendom van 'Humanity' Dick Martyn, een Iers parlementslid in het Britse parlement.
In deze cultuurstad richtten universitair afgestudeerden in 1975 de inmiddels beroemde Druid Theatre Company op. Druid heeft altijd een vitale relatie onderhouden met schrijvers, Tom Murphy en Martin McDonough. Veel bekende Ierse acteurs en regisseurs hebben door de jaren heen met het gezelschap samengewerkt.
De beroemde Spaanse Boog grenst aan open ruimte, bekend als de Spaanse Parade . Dit gebied omvatte ooit de oude Galway haven tot 1840. Oude schepen uit Galley kwamen hier aan vanuit Spanje met wijnen en kruiden voor lokale koopmansfamilies. We leggen ook de betekenis van de Spaanse Boog uit.
De tour gaat nu terug naar de oude middeleeuwse site - The Hall of the Red Earl. Dit was ooit de kasteelresidentie van de machtige Normandiër Richard de Burgo. Tot het einde van de 16e eeuw was het een belangrijk gebouw. De ruïnes waren eeuwenlang verloren gegaan totdat archeologen het eind jaren '90 ontdekten.
De gids zal uitleggen dat de Augustijner Orde in 1500 in Galway aankwam en een abdij stichtte in de Forthil. Het Engelse leger van Oliver Cromwell verbood hen voor een periode, maar ze keerden terug in 1760 en vestigden dit gebouw.
De laatste etappes van onze stadstour brengen ons naar Middle Street, waar we An Taibhdhearc passeren. Dit is het enige Ierstalige theater van Ierland. Het werd opgericht als een grootschalig cultureel project in het begin van 1920, toen Ierland een Vrijstaat werd. Micheal MacLiamor, de eerste directeur/manager werkte er vanaf 1928.
Onze laatste stop is het voormalige kathedraalgebouw in Middle St. / Abbeygate St. Galway. Dit oude gebouw was eeuwenlang in gebruik, maar werd in 1957 door de bisschop van Galway, dr. Michael Browne, als ontoereikend beschouwd.

My husband and I took a 2 hour walking tour of Galway and saw everything. We were very interested in learning the history as both our family names were members of the 14 original tribes of Galway. Gerard, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure we saw everything and had a good experience. I highly recommend

Gerard was wonderful!! He called early before our tour and suggested we move the time a little later as the rain was due to stop. Right on cue, the tour started and rain stopped. Gerard was excellent introducing us to the new and old Galway and told us some interesting Irish facts that we hadn’t heard before. A wonderful informative walk on a soft Irish day 😄. Thanks Gerard!

The tour with Gerard was very nice and informative. While Galway was very busy it is a cool historic city. We learned a lot. We also had plenty of time the rest of the day to take in what the city offers in food, drink and shopping.

Ger is brilliant! The tour was really good and he gave us lots of facts, some of which I didn't know! It's not my first time in Galway, however Ger still took me to places I had not been before, and gave me information about every location. He knows his facts very well and made the tour interactive, answering all of our questions about the city and its history. I would definitely recommend it, especially due to his friendliness and knowledge!

We really enjoyed our tour of Galway with Ger. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and fun. We learned a lot about this history of Galway and of Ireland as a whole while we strolled the streets of the city. Gerrard helped us understand Galway’s complex and interesting history. Highlights included the stories behind important buildings and architectural details, notable restaurants and pubs, and written Gaelic words on prominent shops. We learned a lot, and enjoyed discussing our (and Gerard’s) family roots.

Galway was named the European Region of Gastronomy in 2018 and the European Capital of Culture in 2022. We were paired with another couple despite signing up for a private tour (the explanation was that the agency was short on guides). Our guide, Gerard, seemed inexperienced and often was lacking in-depth knowledge about the sites we visited. He sometimes stopped in places that seemed ill-advised (e.g., narrow sidewalks where we were blocking foot traffic). He sometimes seemed impatient with us when we wanted to stop longer at a particular location.
Hello GotNoMansion, You did not post this under Booking name but are assuming you were with us this week. We appreciate your business and thanks for taking the time to leave this review. All feedback is important to our Tour Guiding service, be it positive or negative, as in this case. I would like to apologize for any shortfalls you encountered while with us. You rightly said that you expected a private Tour but ultimately had to share with another couple. This is a valid point and in this case my guiding colleague rang me at short notice stating that she was unwell and was unavailable to work that morning. I was unable to find a replacement guide at short notice and I myself explained this situation before the start of this particular tour. To solve this issue for future travellers, I have asked Guides who work with us to make sure Western Tours and Tales (WTT) receive at least 4hrs. notice if they are assigned but unavailable to work at a particular tour. I have over seven years experience of guiding Tourists both on City walking tours, Riverboat sightseeing cruises and Celtic Revival tour and am not quite sure how you found me ‘inexperienced’. I do ask at regular intervals if guests any questions on the interesting content and if there’s no follow-up, we move on to the next attraction – during this particular tour, I do not remember you asking any relevant question on my content! You were visiting a city, some of who’s landmarks and medieval buildings are indeed on narrow and busy streets. At times these locations need to be carefully navigated which we advise our guests about . I do hope you enjoyed the remainder of your stay in Ireland’s mid-West.
