Met 3724 meter is Aoraki Mt Cook de hoogste top van Nieuw-Zeeland. Als heilige voorouder voor de lokale Ngā Tahu iwi is Aoraki meer dan alleen een berg. Het verhaal van hem en zijn broers is misschien wel een van de belangrijkste Māori-legendes van het Zuidereiland, en spreekt over de dramatische formatie van Kā Tiritiri o te Moana (Zuidelijke Alpen), die sindsdien de thuisbasis is geworden van een van de mooiste nationale parken van Aotearoa. Dus waarom niet meereizen naar het zuiden om het beste te ervaren van wat het Zuidereiland te bieden heeft. Ontsnap aan de drukte van Ōtautahi Christchurch, deze 1-weg reis avonturen via de Canterbury vlaktes, State Highway 79, de wereldberoemde Fairlie Bakehouse, Lake Tekapo, en Lake Pukaki voordat u aankomt in Aoraki Mt Cook Village. U wordt comfortabel gereden door onze moderne, comfortabele Mercedes Sprinter (of vergelijkbaar) boordevol extra's om de reis net dat beetje makkelijker te maken. We beginnen met het verlaten van Ōtautahi Christchurch, ook wel bekend als Nieuw-Zeeland's Garden City. Terwijl we naar het zuiden gaan, zal onze deskundige Gids enkele hoogtepunten van de centrale stad aanwijzen.
Reizend over de Rakaia brug en het binnenland richting midden Canterbury, zult u zowel het unieke gevlochten ecosysteem van de regio als de lappendekenvelden opmerken. Boerderijen op de vlakten zijn de thuisbasis van een verscheidenheid aan activiteiten, waaronder de teelt van gewassen, wijnbouw, melkveehouderij en veeteelt.
Genesteld in het charmante boerendorp Fairlie, is deze halte altijd populair bij gasten. Het is vooral prachtig in de herfst als de bomen langs de straten en Burkes Pass een levendige sinaasappel kleuren. Het is hier dat u kunt genieten van een beroemde Fairlie Bakehouse taart. De persoonlijke favoriet van ons team is de klassieke steak en kaas!
Vervolgens stoppen we bij Lake Tekapo. Omringd door de zuidelijke Alpen en het uitgesproken slagtandenlandschap van het Mackenzie District, wordt u begroet met een panoramisch uitzicht. Van eind november tot begin januari is de beroemde oever van het meer versierd met clusters wilde lupinen. Terwijl we hier zijn, stoppen we bij een van de meest gefotografeerde locaties van Nieuw-Zeeland; de Church of the Good Shepherd.
Onze laatste stop voor aankomst in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park is Lake Pukaki. Met zijn wisselende kleuren, variërend van ijs tot diepblauw, afhankelijk van het weer, onderscheidt dit door gletsjers gevoede meer zich van andere alpenmeren in de regio. Op heldere dagen kunt u genieten van een ononderbroken uitzicht op Aoraki dat oprijst vanaf de rand van het meer.
Welkom in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park! Eenmaal aangekomen heeft u de mogelijkheid om in te schepen op de Tasman Glacier Viewpoint Track of de Hooker Valley Track of het verkennen van Mt Cook Village, met bezienswaardigheden zoals het Visitor Centre en Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. Als alternatief, als u liever een uitzicht vanuit de lucht wilt, kunnen we een mooie vlucht voor u en uw groep regelen (apart geboekt en verkocht). *Houd er rekening mee dat als gevolg van mogelijke vertragingen van andere klanten of wegomstandigheden, de toegewezen tijd in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park om te verkennen kan zijn minder dan geadverteerd. Dit kan betekenen dat u wandelingen e.d. niet volledig kunt voltooien. Uw vriendelijke Gids zal u op de dag zelf kunnen helpen met de beste opties. Volg om 14:15 uur hun instructies, want zij zullen de ophaaltijd verstrekken voordat ze in Mt Cook Village worden afgezet.
Hier zetten we je af en wensen we je een veilige reis voor je volgende avontuur. Echter, met je camerarol vol, zal deze dag zeker iets zijn om over op te scheppen! Houd er rekening mee dat er rekening wordt gehouden met extra haltes voor toiletpauzes.

Ophaallocaties en -tijden
Voor een vlot ophaalproces dient u minimaal 5 minuten vóór de geplande ophaaltijd op de door u geselecteerde ophaallocatie te wachten. Uw voertuig kan vertraging oplopen als gevolg van eerdere ophalingen. Wees geduldig en wacht 10 minuten voordat u het kantoor belt. Onze chauffeurs kunnen niet wachten op late klanten. No-show/late klanten worden niet terugbetaald. We halen alleen op van locaties waar een ophaalservice staat vermeld. Zorg ervoor dat u ons uw ophaallocatie laat weten. We had Tom as our guide and this played a huge factor to our time on the tour. He was very knowledgeable on the history and traditional world of the Māori people and their land. We learnt a lot! Thank you Tom!!!
Unfortunately, given the small group premium pricing, I found many aspects of the tour fell short. The van was too crammed. Once the snack and lunch bags were handed out, it was so squeezy and uncomfortable. The seat belts were so hard to pull out for many passengers, so i don't know how old the van is. We also never had a stop to eat the lunch collected at Fairlie, so I just went on water and snacks till 2.30pm when I was dropped off at Mt Cook. The guide should advise us on these things so that we know whether to eat while on the van or not. And even that would have been so uncomfortable because there was no space to really handle food in the squeezy seats. The food got so soggy that the paper bag tore as I took the cold sandwich out to eat after I reached my accommodation. The tour staff put me in as vegetarian because I said I can't have beef and pork, so I had a sad sandwich with vegetables, avocado and cheese. I did like that they provided an apple, chips, bottled water, and nut bar, but I could not enjoy these because I had got food poisoning within 20min of eating the sandwich and nut bar. My afternoon was spoiled. Regarding rest stops, only after the 1hr40min non-stop drive in the morning, there were enough stops. An additional stop might be better. For the level of discomfort faced, I would not recommend this tour. However, it is the only small group tour I found that offers stops at Mt Cook trails before drop-off at the village. The stops, walks, and views were nice. I hope my review helps other know what to expect.

The views were absolutely breathtaking. Every stop looked like a postcard! Lake Tekapo was stunning and Mt Cook left us speechless. We took so many photos. The van was really comfy, with plenty of leg space (I'm 1.80 m for reference), and our guide was friendly, funny, and full of great info. We had plenty of stops and time to take photos, and the small group made the experience feel more personal and relaxed. The walk at the Tasman Glacier Trail was very accessible and easy for most people. The meat pies at Fairlie Bakehouse were seriously delicious. Make sure to buy more than one!

Great service that provides an efficient way to commute great distances from one area to another. Drivers were excellent but van space was very cramped. WiFi provided and most appreciated.

Amazing scenes at the lake Tekapo and had a good time at the Tasman Glacier Track. The driver is very friendly and considerate, having us hamburger and pie for lunch. He also drove me to the Haka House when getting the destination. Look forward to visiting next year.

This was an awesome was to transfer from Christchurch to Mt Cook. A lot of scenic stops on the way, good recommendations on local hiking routes, and drop off at your accommodation. Our driver/guide was very easy going and friendly, and gave a lot of insight to the surrounding area. Lunch was provided on top of snacks and drinks which catered well for dietary requirements. I'd recommend!

Although the weather didn't fully cooperate, the one-way tour to Mount Cook from Christchurch was still an incredible experience. The journey itself was scenic and enjoyable, and our guide Diane did their best to keep our spirits high despite the clouds. I can only imagine how breathtaking it must be on a clear day. I'll definitely be back for another attempt keeping an eye on the forecast.
