Ontdek het verborgen industriële erfgoed van Georgië tijdens deze ongewone dagtrip naar Chiatura en de Katskhi-pilaar. Reis door dramatische berglandschappen naar een van de meest bijzondere bezienswaardigheden van het land — een 40 meter lange natuurlijke kalkstenen monoliet bekroond met een kleine kluizenaar, die menselijk doorzettingsvermogen en isolatie symboliseert. Ga verder naar Chiatura, een surrealistische mijnstad uit het Sovjettijdperk die ooit bekend stond als de “stad van de kabelbanen”. Berijd de originele gondels uit het Stalin-tijdperk, verken verlaten fabrieken en muurschilderingen en voel de nostalgische sfeer van het industriële verleden van Georgië. Deze privétour van een hele dag combineert geschiedenis, architectuur en fotografie in één onvergetelijke reis buiten de gebruikelijke toeristische paden.

Mgvimevi-klooster gebouwd in de 8e eeuw. De gevels zijn versierd met kruisen en sierranden. Binnen de kerk aan de muren zijn er muurschilderingen uit de 8e eeuw en de zuidelijke muur is bedekt met schilderkunst uit de 16e eeuw. Een oud fresco, dat onder een nieuwe laag werd ontdekt, portretten een edelman Rati uit Racha Gewest samen met zijn vrouw en zijn broer Niania Kakhaberisdze. Een lange tunnel onder de kerk werd versterkt door bogen. Twee belangrijke voorwerpen uit het Mgvimevi-klooster, een gegraveerd pictogram en een zeer zeldzame gebogen houten deur gemaakt in de 11e eeuw, worden nu bewaard in het Georgian National Museum. In het monastieke complex is er ook een kleine kerk gedeeltelijk uitgehouwen in de zijkant van een klif en twee verdiepingen tellende klokkentoren gebouwd in de 12e-14e eeuw.
De Katskhi-pilaar is een natuurlijke kalkstenen monoliet in het dorp Katskhi in de westelijke Georgische regio Imereti, in de buurt van de stad Chiatura.
De belangrijkste attractie hier is het Stalin-tijdperk kabelbaan systeem dat nog steeds in gebruik is en dient als de belangrijkste manier van vervoer door de stad. De kabelbanen doorkruisen de Qvirilia-rivierkloof die de stad met de mijnen hierboven verbindt via 10 auto's voor passagiers en 2 auto's voor mangaantransport. Sommige van de stations zijn versierd met muurschilderingen van Sovjet-helden. Dit luchttramsysteem bestrijkt meer dan 6 km kabel en staat hoog aangeschreven als een voorbeeldige prestatie van Sovjet-engineering.
Chiatura is meer dan alleen kabelbanen! De wandeling door het centrum was echt aangenaam en als je van de Sovjet-architectuur houdt, zul je de plek nog meer waarderen.

- Deze ervaring is niet geschikt voor reizigers met mobiliteitsproblemen of hoogtevrees. De tour omvat het rijden op oude kabelbanen en het bezoeken van verhoogde uitzichtpunten, wat een uitdaging kan zijn voor gasten die zich ongemakkelijk voelen met hoogtes of afgesloten ruimtes.
- De tour omvat een lange rit (ongeveer 2,5 uur per enkele reis) - niet aanbevolen voor reizigers die vatbaar zijn voor reisziekte of rugproblemen.

We enjoyed the tour of Chiatura and its region. This is a much more local part of Georgia and quite different from the other more popular tours. We got the chance to see a monastery where the locals really go and no tourists. The old Soviet cable cars were really interesting to see. I would recommend this tour to people who want to see more off the beaten paths places.
The whole day was wonderful! We really enjoyed George showing us around the sights. The whole town of Chiatura should be a museum to the bygone days of mining.
Just came back from the tour, both me and my girlfriend enjoyed it a lot. Our guide Aleksi was a great, explaining all the time, always answering our questions competent and very friendly. He was very flexible with photostops and adapted the itinerary for us - he spontaneously changed the route and we also stopped in Gori at the Stalin museum, where he even checked us a guided tour, which made it way more interesting as there a not a lot of written explanations in English. As we are into photography we enjoyed Chiatura a lot, offering different kind of interesting motives. The atmosphere of the city was very special, even more as it was a rather dark and cloudy day. I took a private tour with Aleksi to the town of Chiatura, probably something not on many tourists’ itineraries. I am interested in former Soviet architecture and some of these well preserved towns. Aleksi was full of passion and kept the entire day fun, as we talked both to and from Chiatura (about 3 hours each way from Tbilisi). He was so informative about each stop and I learned an incredible amount about the town and several monasteries we stopped at nearby. We also had some extra time and he drove out of his way to take me to the Stalin Museum in Gori, as well as drop me off into the middle of Old Tbilisi rather than my original pickup point. I would highly recommend this tour and cannot stress enough how great or a guide and person Aleksi is!

I love history and my guide Alexi made sure i got the maximum out of this one day tour to Georgian Chernobyl. The cable cars and the trains were lovely to see and Alexi made sure we get maximum out by taking me to places which are not known yet worth visiting. If you are lover of history then take this trip and get the best out of it. Also, ask Alexi to take you to his fav restaurant and try the eggplant with walnut.
