Rustavi is een post-Sovjet opkomende stad met 100.000 inwoners. Met een nieuw stadsplein en een theater in renovatie, gebeurt er van alles in deze voormalige industriestad. Slechts 25 minuten van Tbilisi, vol met Sovjet-architectuur, omringd door verlaten fabrieken, vervallen parken uit het Sovjettijdperk en stoffige heuvels, het is iets anders.
Lake Mravaltskaro biedt een surrealistische ervaring als geen ander. Omringd door opvallende, kleurrijke rotsformaties geeft dit unieke landschap je het gevoel dat je op een andere planeet bent gestapt. Het is een ongerepte en ongerepte natuurlijke plek met nauwelijks mensen in de buurt, perfect voor degenen die willen ontsnappen aan de drukte en zich onderdompelen in rauwe schoonheid. Genesteld in het ruige terrein van de Georgische regio Kakheti, staat het Natlismtsemeli-klooster als een bewijs van het rijke spirituele erfgoed van het land. Dit actieve klooster werd in de 6e eeuw gesticht door pater Lucianus, een toegewijde discipel van St David. Het maakt integraal deel uit van het gerenommeerde David Gareja kloostercomplex. Bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om de talrijke grottempels en de centrale kerk te verkennen, die oude fresco's uit de 12e eeuw bevat. Deze goed bewaarde kunstwerken bieden een fascinerend inzicht in middeleeuwse Georgische kunst en religieuze toewijding. Vandaag de dag functioneert Natlismtsemeli nog steeds als een levend klooster en biedt het een rustig toevluchtsoord voor wie op zoek is naar spirituele verrijking te midden van de historische en rustige omgeving.
De volgende op onze route is het David Gareji Monastery Complex, een heilige en ontzagwekkende bestemming die eeuwenlang een diepe spirituele betekenis heeft gehad voor Georgiërs. Genesteld in het ruige, dramatische landschap van de zuidoostelijke woestijn van Georgia, is dit oude kloostercomplex direct uitgehouwen in een massieve rotsformatie, waardoor een onvergetelijke mix van natuur en toewijding ontstaat. Terwijl u door de grotkerken en kloostercellen loopt, voelt u de serene en contemplatieve sfeer die al generaties lang monniken en pelgrims aantrekt. David Gareji wordt omgeven door een prachtig uitzicht op de woestijnheuvels en biedt niet alleen een reis naar de religieuze geschiedenis van Georgië, maar ook een rustige ontsnapping naar een van de meest schilderachtige en spirituele landschappen van het land. Tijdens onze tour pauzeren we voor de lunch in het dorp Udabno, waar u de mogelijkheid heeft om authentieke Georgische en Svanetische gerechten te proeven. Een hoogtepunt is de traditionele Kubdari, een stevig met vlees gevuld brood afkomstig uit de Svaneti regio. Voor degenen die de voorkeur geven aan plantaardige opties, bieden de lokale restaurants een verscheidenheid aan vegetarische gerechten, waardoor een heerlijke culinaire ervaring voor iedereen wordt gegarandeerd.
Kapatadze Lake ligt verscholen in de semi-woestijnregio van Georgië, vlak bij het David Gareji-kloostercomplex. Dit zoute meer is rijk aan natuurlijke mineralen en staat bekend om zijn levendige kleuren en rustige omgeving. In de zomer droogt het meer vaak gedeeltelijk op, waardoor glinsterende witte zoutplekken zichtbaar worden die het landschap een bijna buitenaards uiterlijk geven. Het omringende landschap is adembenemend, met eindeloze heuvels, warme woestijntinten en wijd open luchten, waardoor perfecte fotomogelijkheden ontstaan. In het voorjaar bloeien de nabijgelegen amandelboomgaarden, die het droge land beschilderen met zachtroze en witte bloesem. Na de lunch op de terugweg naar Tbilisi kunnen reizigers genieten van een rustig moment om de natuurlijke schoonheid te waarderen en de wilde, ongerepte charme van het Georgische platteland vast te leggen bij deze stop. The scenery was magnificent, with great views of the Hidden Rainbow Mountains. Because the ground was slippery (it had rained the day before), we couldn’t hike as much as we’d planned, but it was still very nice. The visit to the two monasteries was very interesting. The off-road drive was a nice change of pace and a lot of fun. Our tour guide shared a lot of interesting facts during the tour and answered all our questions in great detail.

Excellent tour with informative guide Alex who was a very professional host for the day. Safe and professional driver and clean, well maintained vehicle. Rainbow mountains and St John Monastery were great to explore without having loads of people around, made possible by this tour. Liked the tour so much we booked another with them when we got back. The location was beautiful. The mountains look incredible and the tour guide was very friendly. We stopped on route for a toilet break and at a traditional Georgian bakery for breakfast snacks. The driver was good and the van used was a 4x4 but not a Jeep looking off road vehicle! I don’t feel the benefit of stopping for lunch before the return journey back to Tbilisi, this felt like just a time filler and I would’ve preferred to try and beat the traffic and get back to the city.

The tour was an absolutely fabulous experience and one of the highlights of my trip to Georgia! The Rainbow Mountains are truly unique and stunning, and the hike with Coba, from Friendly Georgia team, was amazing. He shared so much interesting information not only about the places we visited, but also about Georgia 's history, culture and everyday life, which made the whole experience even more interesting. The David Gareji Monastery is gorgeous, but my personal favorite was the visit to the secluded John Baptist cave monastery. Meeting the kind monk who lives there was such a memorable and peaceful experience. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tbilisi!

This tour far exceeded my expectations. The mountains were gorgeous even with overcast skies, and the monasteries were beautiful and serene. We didn't meet any other tourists while hiking or at the St. John the Baptist Monastery, which made for a uniquely peaceful and authentic experience.
