The Only Way To Go

We're the type of travelers who want to see everything. Thanks to Lawrence, we did just that. The transfer from Edinburgh to Inverness included stops at the Kelpies, the Falkirk Wheel, Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument and even House of Bruar (to shop). The pick-up was seamless and on time at 8:00 a.m., and because of the intensive itinerary we didn't reach Inverness until 6:00 p.m. During those 10 hours, Lawrence shared his vast knowledge of all things Scottish and displayed a wonderful sense of humor (yes, we all laughed a lot). There are many ways to get to Inverness from Edinburgh, but a transfer tour with Lawrence is the only way to go.

NOT an Immersive Experience

Our second day with this company was intended to be a customized transfer from Inverness back to Edinburgh with sightseeing and exploration along the way. From my earlier conversations with Andrew, I was very clear that we were not looking for “just a transfer.” If transportation alone had been our goal, we could have booked train tickets for a fraction of the cost. The entire reason we booked a private driver experience was because we were told the day could be tailored to our interests. In fact, I believe the idea for this customized transfer day originally came from Andrew himself, and we were genuinely excited about it. I had specifically communicated that we were most interested in historical and natural sites, and I provided examples of locations we hoped to experience, including Clava Cairns, Culloden Field, and additional scenic/natural stops along the route. Unfortunately, the reality of the day felt very different from what had been discussed. Once again, we passed Loch Ness without stopping and only viewed it through the car window. We were also taken to the Kelpies, which were not part of our wish list at all. While I understand many visitors enjoy the Kelpies, it simply did not align with the type of experience we had repeatedly requested. We briefly exited the vehicle, walked over to view them, and then immediately got back in the car. The experience at Clava Cairns was also awkward and disappointing. Roger did eventually agree to stop there, but we were not really given space to explore independently. He remained directly beside us throughout the visit, which made the experience feel more chaperoned than immersive. What was perhaps most disappointing was Culloden Field. We had specifically expressed excitement about seeing it. Instead of stopping, Roger simply pointed toward it while driving past and told us that it was “just a field” and that we did not really want to see it. That was the entirety of the experience. We traveled across an ocean to experience these places firsthand. We did not expect lengthy hikes or unlimited time at every location. We simply expected opportunities to actually stand in these historic and natural locations, take them in, and explore them in some meaningful way. Instead, much of the day consisted of viewing major sites through the vehicle windows. At more than $1,000 for the day, this was extremely disappointing. Had we understood in advance that the experience would primarily be a transfer with brief roadside views, we absolutely would have made different choices. We have worked with private drivers in other destinations before and understand that these experiences are typically highly customizable and centered around client interests. Unfortunately, this did not feel that way at all. By the end of the trip, it honestly felt as though the priority was simply completing the drive as quickly as possible rather than creating the personalized experience that had been discussed during planning. The Highlands are beautiful, and thankfully the scenery itself is unforgettable. But this portion of our trip definitely did not end the way we had hoped, largely because so much of what we came to see was experienced only through a car window.

Hello Sonya , Our company is Highlander Private Tours , we did not take you on any tour or transfer / tour . Can you let me know why you have posted this very bad review against our company. We are a small family business and our administrators are Lawrence ( myself ) and my brother William ( Billy ). We do not have any Andrew or Roger working with us. If you check our reviews you will see we have no Andrew or Roger working with us. Please inform Tripadvisor that you have posted this terrible review on the wrong page. Thank you Lawrence Maclean

Trip to Inverness

We were picked up at our hotel and had a driving tour on the way to inverness. There were two routes to pick from and then it is really up to you. The driver Lawrence from "Highlander Private Tours" was wonderful. He was a wealth of knowledge and really had an interest in asking you what you wanted to see and he was able to craft the journey to fit. Good narration and conversation on the drive. The famous highland weather was ever-present but even if the true sight was obscured the mist was beautiful in its own right. I would love to be able to take this adventure again. I hope I can make it happen

Smooth driving through the Highlands; a relief for someone prone to motion sickness

Absolutely fabulous! Fantastic driving and commentary all with thoughtful consideration of our comforts. I am prone to motion sickness so was a bit anxious prior to the trip but never felt a qualm with Billy at the helm.

Thanks Billy!

Our family did a number of days with Billy. He's the best. We have a number of people in our group who get motion sick very easily and frankly we were nervous about driving around for so long with a new driver. Fear not. Billy is a SMOOTH DRIVER. We were comfortable and could enjoy the scenery and commentary about the beautiful country. Billy is warm, funny, and considerate. He was always there right when we needed him with a warm van and lots of snacks!!! If you're an anxious traveler, Billy will put you at ease. Honestly might name my first born after him. Thanks Billy!!

I Must Add This!

Our daylong drive from Edinburgh to Inverness was outstanding. We spent time in the Glencoe Valley, Loch Ness and other unforgettable spots. Billy our driver was so knowledgeable and engaging! He made the hours together flyby. We’d highly recommend this trip.

A Journey Through the Heart of Scotland – With Mr. Billy and Mr. Lawrence May 2025 – 4 Days of Beauty and History

I spent four unforgettable days in Scotland in May 2025, accompanied by two remarkable individuals: Mr. Billy and Mr. Lawrence. This journey wasn’t just about landscapes — it was about the way we moved through them, and how each route revealed something different about the soul of this country. Mr. Lawrence offered a route that felt like an unfolding tapestry of Scottish history. Every stop had depth, every story stirred my curiosity. With him, the road was lined with historical insights, meaningful landmarks, and moments that made me feel deeply connected to the past. It was rich, fulfilling, and left me wanting to know more. His path answered questions I didn’t even know I had. Mr. Billy, on the other hand, led us through a more visual and sensory route — one filled with seaside villages, panoramic coastal views, and tranquil open roads. One of the most memorable moments with him was visiting filming locations from the Outlander series. As a fan, I was truly amazed — not only by the beauty of the sites themselves, but also by how the real history intertwined with the fictional world of the show. His choices reflected a deep understanding of Scotland’s serene beauty. Both experiences were exceptional, and what truly stood out was how each route offered both knowledge and beauty. There was no competition — only complementary reflections of a country so layered and generous in what it shares with those who seek it. Whether you’re driven by curiosity or by stillness, by the echoes of the past or the quiet of the present, Scotland will meet you with open arms and ancient whispers. I couldn’t have asked for better guides — or a more meaningful journey.
