Excellent experience in Ketchikan

This is an excellent tour with Matthew, who did a great job showing us around and giving us a great rundown of Alaskan history, as well as giving us some good sightseeing with animals, waterfall, totem poles, and was an overall genuine kind person. Highly recommend for large families.

A great experience.

Glinda did a phenomenal job ensuring we had an amazing experience. We saw bears, a million eagles, got up close to a waterfall and found sea glass on a beautiful beach.

Amazing time in Ketchikan

Alaska is a bucket list trip for us and we decided to see it via cruise ship. Ketchikan was our first port and from the moment Shad picked us up to the moment he dropped us off everything was amazing! Shad was very knowledgeable not only about Ketchikan itself but also about the wildlife. We got to see 3 bears and more bald eagles than I’ve ever seen all at one time! He drove us through Saxman village and told us all about the totem poles and he took us to Creek Street where we met his friend who sold delicious salmon. I had to ship some home, it was so good! I would highly recommend this trip and make sure to ask for Shad!

Matt was a good guide and...

Matt was a good guide and showed us around to quite a few different areas in a short amount of time. It was raining pretty good the day we were in Ketchikan so it was a relief to have him driving us around. He also tried a couple of times for us to see bears because my son really wanted to see a bear in Alaska. We were unsuccessful but the tides were high and the bears don't seem to come out when it's high tide but he gave it his best effort. We went to Herring Cove (twice), a secluded waterfall, &Totem Bight State Historical Park. Per our request, he dropped us off at Creek Street for us to explore on our own. Matt was very informative and answered all of our random questions we threw at him. We booked very last minute due to the rain and Matt was waiting for us at the dock with a sign with our name on it. Great overall experience!

Private tour of Ketchikan with Tucker.

Our guide Tucker was a great guy! We loved picking salmon berries and huckleberries. The waterfall and black bear sighting were highlights. Our family the tide pool and totem museum. All and all a great day. Thanks, Tucker!

Great tour for our group of 12

Shad was friendly and picked us up super close to our cruise ship. He had snacks and water and knew where to go to give us the best possible chance of seeing a bear. He had lots of info and it was nice having a local explain the area so well. Would totally recommend!

Find out which guide is taking you before you go as it can impact your enjoyment/experience

Unfortunately, it was not a great experience. We have used Viator for booking many terrific experiences over many years, but this one fell very short of the mark. 1. Professionalism lacking: We were greeted by our "guide", Rene, who was wearing a baggy grey sweatshirt and black tights. All other vans picking up clients were in uniforms or were wearing attire with clear company logos confirming their employment with a particular tour company. 2. Lack of Knowledge: Rene had only lived in Ketchikan for 2 years and it was evident she lacked knowledge of the area. She didn't know the difference between a raven and a crow. She didn't know the various species of deer that lived on the island. She didn't know what salmon species come to the local rivers or the timing of when certain species attend the rivers. She didn't know what industries besides fishing existed on the island. She didn't know where, if any, historical sites were located on the island. She commented that we asked "good questions" and that she needed to do more research. This kind of research and knowledge of the animals and history should pre-date any guiding she undertakes. 3. Disrespectful tone/tenor when discussing the local Indigenous population: She mentioned at least 3 times that the Indigenous population "doesn't have to pay for anything", with the implication being that they were receiving handouts from the government without providing any context or understanding as to how or why such agreements have been reached. At one point, she pulled up along side an intricate totem pole. She described it as a "boy being eaten by a whale" and then made inappropriate quips about the Indigenous story behind the totem and then ended her commentary with, "but i don't really understand it anyway." If you are going to be a guide, then you should know these stories, or don't bother stopping at the totem pole at all. 4. Lack of engagement at stops: Our guide did not engage with our group of 8 during any of the stops. At one stop, Rotary Beach, we learned more from eavesdropping on another guide with their group about the types of seaweed and rock formations on the beach. If our guide knew any information about these topics, it wasn't volunteered. At another stop at a river, we learned about seal behaviour from listening to other guides while ours stayed silent in close proximity to the van. 5. Lack of enthusiasm: If our guide was enjoying life in Ketchikan, it wasn't obvious. From "it rains all the time" to "everywhere you want to walk, it's uphill", to "we have no good stores here", it felt as if Ketchikan was more of a prison than a paradise. 6. Poor condition of vehicle: The van we drove didn't have working vents in the back. This meant that windows (which weren't able to be opened) kept fogging up making viewing difficult. One of our group didn't have a working seatbelt. Our guide said that they hadn't driven this vehicle before and wasn't aware of the problems. There was no offer of water/snacks. We saw virtually every other tour our size with similar vans being offered water during their tours, which made us question why we were paying almost $1,000 for this experience.
