I spent a great deal of time researching tour operators for our recent trip to the Scottish Highlands and ultimately chose Andrew because of his excellent reviews and the emphasis on customizable experiences. When I first contacted Andrew late last year, I explained that my travel companion and I had very limited time in Scotland due to significant obligations back home. We specifically wanted a personalized Isle of Skye experience that focused on exploration rather than simply viewing sites from the car. I fully understood the long driving distances involved from Inverness and repeatedly acknowledged that reality during our planning conversations. Andrew assured me that the itinerary could absolutely be customized around our interests, and I sent him a list of the kinds of locations and experiences we hoped to have. The first major issue occurred the evening before our scheduled tour, when I reached out to confirm our pickup time. Andrew informed me that our tour was actually booked for several weeks later. My heart dropped. While those had originally been our dates, I had later contacted him due to medical conflicts, and he had confirmed the revised dates. Unfortunately, it appears those changes were never updated on his calendar. To his credit, Andrew did quickly arrange for another driver, Roger, to cover the tour. Roger himself was personable and conversational, and I do not have any personal issue with him. However, the experience we received was dramatically different from what had been discussed and promised during the planning process. Roger seemed very reluctant about driving to the Isle of Skye and openly expressed frustration about the length of the drive throughout the day. As travelers who crossed an ocean specifically to experience Skye, hearing our private driver repeatedly grumble about being there genuinely diminished the excitement of the experience. More importantly, what we received was essentially a “drive-by” tour. We spent nearly the entire day in the vehicle. We were only able to get out and meaningfully explore one location on the Isle of Skye before turning around. Many major sights—including Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle—were viewed briefly from the roadside or from the car window. Roger repeatedly suggested that bigger surprises and better exploration opportunities were coming later in the day, but those moments never materialized. What was particularly disappointing is that we intentionally booked a private, premium-priced tour specifically to avoid this kind of experience. We did not expect to hike for hours at every stop, nor was that ever communicated. We simply wanted opportunities to actually stand in these locations, walk around, absorb the scenery, and experience the Highlands beyond a windshield view. After returning home, I attempted to respectfully explain my disappointment to Andrew. Unfortunately, the conversation became argumentative, and I was told that Roger had already delivered more than expected. That response was frustrating because it ignored the core issue: the expectations communicated during the booking process were completely different from the experience that was ultimately delivered. Ironically, earlier in our trip we booked a small-group tour with another company for a fraction of the cost and saw infinitely more of Scotland in a more immersive and enjoyable way. My takeaway is this: if you are simply looking for a scenic driving tour where most sights are viewed from the vehicle, you may enjoy this experience. However, if you are paying premium pricing for a truly customized and immersive Highlands experience centered around exploration, I would encourage booking elsewhere. As a travel advisor myself, I would not feel comfortable recommending this experience to future clients. When I traveled to Scotland, I hoped to experience the Highlands firsthand—not primarily through a car window.
Thanks again for a fantastic write up of the tour you experienced I have already apologised for any mistakes made on our end due to the confusing emails and mixture of dates you gave us The tour you had followed the itinerary given and which you were happy with at the time of booking us 10 days to two weeks later I received your complaint saying how our driver did not cover what the itinerary suggested or what you had specifically asked for You had not asked to hike on Skye but had suggested in your email to me after the tour you would of liked time to hike which is physically impossible with the time you had on the day and the weather but we did give you time at the fairy pools to walk / hike here things like that need to be mentioned prior and as of yet I have not seen a reply or screen grabs showing that I agreed to anything other than what was originally agreed. Suggested itinerary was given via email and you were happy with what was mentioned for both days
A truly amazing experience! Andy made our trip—the Isle of Skye was my mom’s bucket list destination and it was completely unforgettable. This was my second time booking with Andy, and I’m so impressed by how he continues to improve his tours by adding new scenic stops and sharing bits of Scottish history along the way, he really cares that you have a great experience! We did a full day tour of the Isle of Skye and another day in Glencoe/ Fort William. Both days were breathtaking, well-paced, and so comfy in his vehicle. If you’re considering a private day tour, I truly cannot recommend Andy enough! His service allowed us to fully absorb the incredible landscape around us while creating amazing memories with my mom!
It was a pleasure
We had an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience with Highland Discovery Tours! We booked on a family friend’s recommendation and are so glad we did. Everything was smooth, easy, and perfectly organized. The Private Isle of Skye Tour from Inverness far exceeded our expectations. The scenery was breathtaking, and having Andy as our guide made it even more special. He was knowledgeable and friendly, made the day feel personal and relaxed, and navigated the narrow roads with ease so we always felt safe. We were lucky to have beautiful weather, which made exploring Skye even more magical. My personal favorites were the Fairy Glen, the Quiraing, and a cozy stop for delicious fish and chips! We also booked the Fort William to Inverness transfer, which was just as comfortable, reliable, and stress-free. Andy even had phone chargers ready when mine died from taking too many photos. What really sets Highland Discovery Tours apart is their attention to detail. Everything felt personalized, well-paced, and full of hidden gems and fascinating history. If you’re looking for the best way to explore the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye from Inverness, I highly recommend Highland Discovery Tours. It was truly the highlight of our trip and something our family will talk about for years to come!
It was a absolute pleasure
Our guide and driver, Andy, was fantastic! We thoroughly enjoyed our day to The Isle of Skye with him. It was just the 2 of us plus our guide. Originally it was going to be 3 of us but one of our group members wasn't feeling well. We had originally booked this tour because our friend hadn't see that part of Scotland before. So, when he couldn't go, Andy suggested we switch things up on our stops since my husband and I had been to the isle before. We had a great day and we found Andy to be very personalable, social, and professional. Even though the weather was unpredictable at times, we still had a good time. **Be sure to take a rain jacket regardless of what you think the weather says. The weather on the isle is likely to be totally different from the city. ***Also plan on a full 10hr day.
Andy was an excellent guide to the Isle of Skye. He took us to all the important spots and provided more than enough time at each location for taking in the sights. Andy was also knowledgeable about the history of each location, and would tell us as we got close to each destination. He was very entertaining and made the day a great experience. We could not have asked for a better time!
Beautiful landscapes. The trip from Inverness is a long day. We knew that going into this but folks should be prepared for a lot of time in the car. The stops were 20 min up to 1.5 hours. We bought sandwiches and ate lunch in the car. Perhaps we would have changed the itinerary to include a restaurant stop for lunch and skip some of the smaller or shorter stops. We had a very very windy day so we didn’t linger on any walks.
Unfortunately it is along day you would cover over 300+ miles we do our best to make the day as easy as possible but happy enjoyed the day with us Andy
Wonderful tour. We had the private tour with just our family. Roberto was a wonderful host & driver. Would highly recommend to others
Thanks dawn Roberto had a great day with you all and was delighted to be able to drive you again the next day I hope the rest of your vacation goes well enjoy Edinburgh Andy
Our tour with Andy was truly fantastic and the highlight of our several week European vacation. Prior to the tour I let Andy know that I would be proposing to my girlfriend on this day. He helped me with all the logistics, captured some amazing photographs of us, and even brought champagne so we could raise a glass in celebration. Isle of Skye was breathtaking, and I cannot believe how much Andy was able to fit into a single tour. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and really brought the tour to life. Next time we are in the Highlands we will be booking another tour with Andy as his service was truly second to none
It was a pleasure congratulating to you both again fantastic day glad to of been a part of it I look forward to the next time Andy
