Our food walking tour by Slow Travel Italy was excellent! Our guide Teresa was interesting, knowledgeable, and so nice. There were only 3 of us on the tour, so very easy to get around. First stop was the showroom of Acetaia Malpighi, a member of the local balsamic consortium since 1850. We got to try their 12-year and 25-year old traditional balsamics which were incredible, then a bunch of their classic products (the kind you see in an Italian supermarket), which were also delicious. They had barrels aging on site, the smell was heavenly. The tour included much of the history of Modena too, which we always find interesting. Their former ducal palace is now a training school for soldiers. And their Duomo was formed from blocks of re-used Roman stone. There was an adorable covered market, open daily and reminiscent of Reading Terminal in Philadelphia. We saw the statue of Luciano Pavarotti, who was born (and died) in Modena. The statue is in front of the Modena opera house, the 1st place he ever performed. Onto the oldest "deli" in the world (or so they claim!) Premiata Salumeria, Guiseppe Giusti. It opened in 1605 and has been owned continuously by the same family. We each got a box containing Prosciutto di Parma, Ciccioli Montanari, Parmesan Reggiano, and some beautiful bread. The next stop overwhelmed me! Antiqua Pasticceria, S. Biagio was a tiny bakery absolutely loaded with delicious looking pastries. Each of us picked a pastry, they sliced them 3 ways so we all got to try bites of 3 things. OMG, sugar overload! Our final stop was a simple, glass-roomed restaurant in a park. Surrounded by greenery, we tasted two local Lambrusco wines (sparkling reds) and were served yet another huge platter of local meats, cheeses, breads. I've got to say that for 60 Euros a piece, this walking tour was a bargain. Highly recommend!

It was a fantastic experience. Teresa was an excellent guide: she knows her city deeply and during the tour, she was able to customize the explanations based on our interests, also giving us great advice for afterwards. The food was delicious, with balsamic vinegar and wine as the true stars of the tasting. I absolutely recommend this experience to anyone passing through Modena. Top-notch!

Our guide showed up late. Supposed to be a site seeing and food tour but our "guide" admitted she knew nothing about Modena! After 40 minutes walking of a 2 hour "tour" we stopped at a balsamic vinegar facility and tasted a few drops of balsamic. After leaving there we walked 25 minutes with zero explanations from our guide about literally anything only to arrive at a dessert shop that was closed! Guide Says don't worry we will walk 15 more minutes and look at the square and then back. Store still closed so we left the tour early. A complete and TOTAL ripoff and waste of time.. Do.NOT book with this company!
