Great overview of the city, history, and sites. Guide was great! Need to be fit—going up many flights of steep steps.
Unfortunately endless transfer times, waiting times when changing trains with overcrowded minibuses. Bench with < 40cm seat width per person. Excursion indicated with 10h, actually 9:30h, of which 4:55h transfer & waiting times.
It is a recommended visit if you go to Punta Cana, it is a place approximately two hours by land. We visited the Cathedral in excellent condition, the rum museum and the history museum, as well as taking a tour of its sea wall and picturesque streets with beautiful balconies, which allowed us to travel in the history of Colon and the independence of this island.
I did make it to Santo Domingo and back as promised, which is definitely a positive. However, the overall experience left much to be desired. The bus was extremely uncomfortable for a ride that lasted over two hours each way. The seats were clearly not designed for adults — it felt like they were made for one and a half people, with half of me sitting off the edge the whole time. What made the trip even more exhausting was the constant pressure for tips, repeated over and over in a tone that felt almost threatening. There were even two signs inside the bus asking for tips, so the extra verbal insistence was really unnecessary. We had incredibly long stops at souvenir shops with outrageously overpriced items — clearly a trap for tourists. As for the historical part of the tour, it barely scratched the surface. Instead of diving into the rich history of Santo Domingo, the guide mostly talked about celebrities who had filmed or visited there, and famous baseball players. To top it off, on the way back, the driver didn’t turn on the air conditioning. The bus felt like a sauna the entire ride home. In summary, I wouldn’t recommend this tour unless the company seriously improves the comfort and focus of the experience.
Please don’t ever book with this provider. They won’t show up at the hotel to pick you up. I was advised by tour or concierge that these provider is terrible. I wished I have listened to the Hotel concierge about this tour provider because they warned me about booking with this tour provider . On the day of my tour, We where at the hotel lobby as scheduled and waited for over an hour they did’nt show up and the hotel concierge tried to contact them for over 30 mins didn’t answer. They finally got them after about an hour after the schedule time and they said they the driver was at the hotel without any proof. Then, they wanted to scheduled it for another day. I rejected the offer and requested a full refund. Please Viator this provider needs to be removed because they are terrible. They don’t ever require 1 star.
Great day trip. Very nice drivers and Victor, the tour guide for the day, was excellent. He was so kind and took his time to explain everything in Spanish and English. Santo Domingo is a beautiful city with a rich history. Everyone we met was very nice and the lunch buffet was celebrated many of the culinary traditions of the country. I would definitely recommend this tour.
Had a lovely time. Got to see and got told a lot of information. Tour guide was fantastic. ( I think his name was Mike). Had a little wait after pick up (which was on time) to transfer into another bus. Which was done efficiently. Only down side which was not the fault of anyone was, our bus had taken a puncture, so this delayed us a little in getting back, but our Guide stayed with us till there was another vehicle to get us back.
Leo was excellent----great historian and friendly host for the tour!! Nice time exploring the history and culture.
Memorable. But long day trip to Santo Domingo. From hotel to hotel it was about 12 hours. Took some time for the driver to get us and to pick one other up and drop one off along the way. Once we actually got into Santo Domingo, we met with the best guide ever Miguel. We started off at the national park where the caverns were absolutely spectacular. Miguel was sure to point out the history of that particular area. After that, we stopped off at a few historical areas like the Columbus mausoleum, the presidential Palace, all along the way, telling us the history of the areas and then stopped off at a quaint little place for lunch. Proceeded to the Santo Domingo sign, saw the church in the Godfather, the first City Hall, and then proceeded to one of the first cathedrals ever built. The cathedral was spectacular. Stopped for a beverage and souvenir shop. Only unfortunate part of the trip was one of our travel companions, put her card into an ATM and couldn’t get it back. Highly recommend you bring cash if needed and not use any ATM in the Dominican Republic. Was a long two hours back, but definitely worth the day. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Definitely worth it if you’re wanting to learn the history of the Dominican.
Totally recommended excursion to see the colonial part of the first Spanish city, the first university and the first cathedral in Latin America. It is well organized and enjoyable.
