Bear sighting good! Guide below average

Chad was our guide. Nice but provided little information about the history and area. Stated he’d rather be home with his family. We were very fortunate to see a bear though in his natural habitat! Otherwise, the trip would have been a complete failure!

Beautiful Wilderness, majestic bears and wildlife!

John and his wife Marilyn were incredible! Booking with them direct was so easy. They called back immediately and helped me arrange our large family group of 13 with such each! We loved that both grew up and were from Hoonah all their lives, and their knowledge of the backcountry we drove in they knew so well. Took backroads to find the majestic brown bears, and it was amazing. They let us stay with this mom and her cub for awhile to watch them up close along the road where they like to hang out. Their van very comfortably and fit all 13 of us which included 2 infants and 3 little toddlers. We brought our own Wavy car seats for infants and John had boosters for the toddlers. They knew the bears and what we learned from them about them was very educational for us all. The walk from ship to Gondalia takes only a few minutes, and ride to the excursion hub was short and fun. If traveling with infants, strollers the gondola offers handicap bigger cars, and you also skip the lines!! If you have time, there is a huge area to shop in once you get off gondola to go to after or before the excursion. You can also walk from the ship to excursion hub, but the trail is fairly steep. It Only takes about 15 min to walk. Even when our ship changed the time we came into Icy Strait just two weeks before getting there, John made our tour work, and he was so accommodating, friendly and helpful. We booked this private tour with Wilderness Island Tours and couldn’t have had a better and more enjoyable time!!! Icy Strait was pure magic, and the wilderness so pure and beautiful. We highly recommend this tour, and recommend booking directly with this tour company. Just know, Once you spot bears you need to stay really quiet in the van to observe them.

Wonderful hosts! Amazing tour!

Excellent! We looked at several companies for a bear tour, but ultimately chose Wilderness Island Tours because it's the only company that is locally owned and operated by members of the Tlingit nation, and we are SO glad we did. John and Marilyn are a delightful couple who bring deep knowledge and respect for the land and wildlife. They knew exactly where to go to search for bears, and we were lucky enough to see a mama bear with two cubs, and later, a male bear. It was awesome to see brown bears in the wild! While we drove around in their large, comfortable van, John and Marilyn taught us so much about the other wildlife, berries, and trees we were passed. They also shared fascinating stories about their culture. One thing to note if you are coming to Icy Straight Point via cruise ship: there are two different places for cruise ships to dock, one of which involves taking a gondola across the island. It's free but adds about 20 minutes to your travel time, so plan accordingly when considering the time you dock vs. the start time of the tour. We were lucky and made it just in time for our tour.

UnBEARably AWESOME!

We're always early, but our guide was even earlier! She was waiting for us with an incredible positive attitude and was lots of fun! She knew EVERYONE in the town of Hoonah! Lots of smiles and waves, back roads and fun! The flora was incredible and the views breathtaking. However, spending time watching THREE different bears just doing their bear things was MAGICAL! We loved hearing about her family and the island, and even getting to meet some of them. This tour felt very much like a very knowledgeable and fascinating family friend showing us around the island.

Great tour with local

This was our best excursion of our Alaska cruise. Mary a local indigenous woman was phenomenal. Very knowledgeable about all the plants and the history of the area. We were able to see a momma bear and her 2 young cubs. Highly recommend.

Wildlife Tour Experience

We saw an eagle. The tour was more of a botanical excursion. The driver/tour guide was nice and very knowledgeable about trees and herbs. However, you will have a low chance of seeing bears except when the salmon run in July. My biggest complaint is the tour spent too much time in Hoonah and not looking for wildlife. But, it does immerse you in the local culture. Overall, it was a 3.5...just not what I expected.

There are bears out there!!

Chadum our guide was low key knowledgeable! Lots of bits of interesting information. He gave us a good tour around without sighting bears to start with, then, just as we started to think we would not see one, the scat was seen on the road! There were bears out there somewhere! And sure enough, around the corner one slowly walked ahead of us ! He was approx 900lb and 5years old. He was looking for a mate and really paid no attention to us! He ambled along, eventually stopping to eat grass. We left him with another tour party and started back. Then along came another bear!! He was 1/4 as big again!! Thanks for the great adventure!

Extremely Disappointed

The one star is due to our tour guide Jeremy’s honesty, avoiding wasted time. Jeremy informed us that we were too early in the season and bears were pretty much still hibernating. In addition there were road closures restricting access where sightings might be possible, limiting the routine drive. We were to drive down a road in one direction for an hour and return to meet our tour time. With that information, approx 30MINS in we opted to cut things short. We asked if we could treat him to lunch at a local lodge prior to return, and/or even be dropped off at the lodge and return on our own with no luck. We were informed that service was bad and there was no means of contacting the owner for deviations or even to obtain permission. We tried independently with no luck or response also. We returned over an hour early

Thank you for choosing Wilderness Island Tours as part of your Alaskan adventure. The road closure was due to road repairs, including the replacement of culverts. Your ship was the second ship of the season. The statement that bears are still hibernating is true; however, the fact of the matter is that there are bears out and about. That road is not the only road system where you could have seen bears. Interestingly, the road he took you on had seen wildlife just the day before, and there was another, much larger road system available to explore, where wildlife had been seen days before your excursion. The pressure on guides to place wildlife in front of guests within a short timeframe is high. To call the excursion short, you will never know if you would have seen wildlife or not on that other road. It's important to note that while we have a good understanding of bear travel routes, wildlife sightings can be unpredictable. I understand that it can be disappointing not to see wildlife immediately, but it's essential to manage expectations. Our goal is to provide the best experience possible, and we might consider how we can better communicate this in the future. If guests expect to see wildlife within the first half hour, we would be selling half-hour tours. That is an unreasonable expectation. Jeremy made the right decision by taking you back to the front gate of Icy Strait Point. This is a requirement for all vendors as stated in our agreement with Icy Strait Point.
