We admired the entrepreneurial spirit in designing a self-guided tour that covers a lot of territory in Helsinki. The bicycles were fully charged and equipped with water bottles and emergency tire inflation bottles. One bicycle had a rearview mirror and one bicycle had a back storage bar, but the tiedown did not work. Be prepared if you want to strap accessories onto the bike. There were some issues however: the starting point is far from city center. The tour does provide instructions for train access from city center and should be used. The Uber was fairly pricey. The bikes are on the small side. We did not think to convey this information to the tour operator. Upon arrival, we discovered that all bikes were the same size. As a 6 foot one, 200 pounder the bike was a little too small for me. My wife is petite 5’4” and 120# and was OK for her. The downloadable Google map, with the tour routing, functions well when we had time to fiddle with our phones, but on the bicycle the experience was a little wonky. Overshooting turn points and deviating from the path results in rerouting and can lead to confusion at busy intersections. At times, the designated navigator will have to divert a lot of attention to the map rather than enjoy the sightseeing. Approaching the national preserve at the beginning of the tour, we missed the “no bicycle” entry point sign and proceeded through the park on our E bikes. It wasn’t until we stopped at the gift shop that we were thoroughly chastised by an employee and escorted out of the park, pushing our bikes on the walk of shame. Further along the tour, we discovered that the Rock Church was closed on the day we were there, Monday! After that disappointment, we elected to go straight back to the starting/parking point for the bikes and wrap up our tour. Again, after several minutes of fumbling with the map and trying to use the starting point as a destination we were able to quickly return. The direct way back going through mostly forests and parkland was one of the highlights of the tour. The train station is very near the the return point and is a quick and efficient way of getting back to the city center. We started this tour with just one afternoon to enjoy Helsinki. It’s really not enough time to give the tour justice and to see all the points recommended on the map. We would’ve much preferred to start at mid morning and end the tour late afternoon for a full experience.
Hi Alex, kiitos for the thoughtful and detailed review and for joining the self‑guided Seurasaari tour! I’m happy to hear you appreciated the entrepreneurial idea, the equipment and the forest route back. I’m sorry about the stress with navigation and the misunderstanding at Seurasaari – cycling is indeed not allowed on the island and I always indicate in the tour instructions that guests must park and lock the e‑bikes before crossing the bridge and then continue on foot. I will now highlight this point even more clearly in the map and written directions, so it’s easier to notice before entering the island. Thanks again for all your suggestions about timing, bike size and starting point: they help me improve the experience for future riders.
