This clock is part of the Palazzo Accursio, the seat of the Bologna City Hall since 1336. In 1451, the tower became a bell tower with the installation of the first mechanical clock connected to a bell that rang every hour on the hour. In 1498, restoration work was carried out, necessary after a fierce fire in 1492, reaching its current height of 36.20 meters thanks to the addition of an octagonal lantern surrounded by a railing of pillars, according to a design by Giovanni da Brensa. From the upper terrace, one can enjoy wonderful views of Bologna, especially of the Piazza Maggiore. To reach this terrace, one must be careful when climbing a narrow staircase.
An overall great experience and stunning views! Buying through the tour group got us immediately to the front of the line.
Meeting point to pick up tickets and vouchers super easy to find. Good clear instructions. The clock tower gave superb views over Bologna. The food vouchers were bonus and highly recommend the two places to try some local food. Not just tasters. The ticket price included entrance to the art exhibition which again was stunning. We were glad we returned after 2pm to visit the gallery.
This was an enjoyable self guided tour. The Clocktower offered audio from your cell phone (bring your earphones/earbuds) that provided lots of great information. The veiws and breeze at the top were fantastic! Food vouchers for various food experiences was nice, being able to redeem as we pleased was appreciated. Wish the guy at the sandwich shop was a little more welcoming but what can you do? Overall, we were very happy with this tour overall.
Thank you for the great review! It's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the tour and found it memorable. We appreciate your support and hope to see you again soon.
Beautiful view of Bologna and the main squares. Steep and fun stairs. A bit cumbersome ', purchase and use of tickets.
It was a good self tour. You were given the audio tour of the clock tower and the art museum is on your own. The audio guide was interesting. The art museum was good but nothing like you would experience in NYC museums.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
