When I first started researching this trek and deciding which company to use, I spoke with several of them. Salkantay Trekking stood out as the most responsive, friendliest, and most communicative, both through WhatsApp and email. Because of that, I chose them for our family of four’s trek over Salkantay Pass under the expert guidance of our guide and former nurse, Edgar. From Day 1 through Day 5, everything was exceptionally well organized. All we had to do was show up on time and follow their directions. We had a small group of six trekkers but never felt isolated, as the different groups often mingled at the campsites. Edgar took outstanding care of my wife, my two boys, and me. From picking us up at our hotel in Cusco and ensuring our luggage was handled properly, to giving us hot water bottles to place in our sleeping bags at Sky Camp during the subzero temperatures, and even personally serving us coca tea at 4:30 a.m. on our first morning, his attention to detail was remarkable. Emergency horses were available in case anyone had difficulty completing the initial four-mile climb to Salkantay Pass. The downhill portions over the following days were much more manageable, with well-timed breaks and snacks provided along the way. The campsites were more like glamping than traditional camping. Occasionally, there were minor issues with plumbing or hot water, but they were addressed quickly whenever they were brought to the staff’s attention. We had our own chef, and every meal was fantastic. The team easily accommodated each person’s dietary preferences and restrictions, whether vegetarian, dairy-free, no red meat, or no restrictions at all. There was always plenty of food, hydration was carefully managed, and Edgar did an excellent job keeping us on pace to reach each campsite before nightfall. Once we arrived in Aguas Calientes, Edgar efficiently got us in line so we didn’t have to wait long. He distributed our bus tickets and Machu Picchu circuit passes, making the process completely seamless. Other than carrying our own backpacks, we never had to worry about keeping track of anything.
Best trip, was brutally amazing, everyday was challenging and views were stunning. Guides pushed us beyond where we thought we could do, and supported us through each challenge. Juan Carlos was the best guide , great knowledge of history and plants. Elias our other guide was also very educated in plants, archeologist sites and history. Both were so much fun and happy to such great guides that I will consider friends onward. The food was unbelievable , even with my allergies they made everything tasty, flavours were great.
The Premium Salkantay 5-Day Trek was an outstanding experience and one we’ll never forget. The entire trip was well organized, communication was excellent from start to finish, and every day was packed with amazing experiences. A huge thank you to our guide, Ricardo, who was the highlight of the trip. He was fun, knowledgeable, and professional, sharing so much about Peru, Inca history, and the local flora and fauna while keeping everyone laughing along the way. Our chef, Urbano, absolutely blew us away. My wife and I are vegetarians, and he surprised us with creative, delicious meals every single day. A big thanks as well to our horseman, Milo, who worked hard behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. We highly recommend this trek to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure in Peru.
Such an amazing experience. Carlos Navarre was a notch guide who took care of all the details for us. Challenging but well worth the effort to see such a viewpoint of the glaciers, the jungle and of course Machu Picchu! Highly recommend
Everything was excellent; beyond the natural places, which were obviously beautiful, where we stayed was beautiful, and the service (cooks, guide) was very good. What I highlight about the guide are his stories in relation to each place we went; he makes you feel part of the history.
Overall, an accomodating experience that was adapted relatively last notice. Our guide was fantastic and really helpful.
This was an amazing trip! The views, accommodations, and food was amazing. Everything was very organized and you were just able to enjoy the experience! Javier was an amazing guide- he was knowledgeable, organized, fun, and kind. I highly recommend!
An amazing journey trekking through the Andes over the Salkantay Pass to Machu Picchu. An experience of a lifetime which would not have been the same without our beautiful guide Guido. His experience, knowledge, good humour and kindness made for an incredible time. From organising every detail, supporting us along the way and teaching us about the land and history, I couldn’t recommend a better guide. Salkantay Trekking has been a great company to work with, they were organised and responsive and look after their community. A special mention to the chefs and horseman which we would not have survived without. A dream experience.
An excellent experience. Javhier (our guide) was charismatic, funny, knowledgeable, and most importantly, kind. The trek was challenging but manageable and we were in safe hands. We ended up in a group of 10 people: the group had a nice mix of ages and backgrounds and everyone was friendly. I would wholeheartedly recommend.
Hands down one of the best experiences you can have! I am not a hiker by all means but the Salkantay Trek was truly a great challenge and rewarding hike. You will be taken care of and meet the best people along the way. A huge thank you to our tour guide, Javier V, who’s the BEST, horsemen and chefs! They truly made this experience incredible.
