Spanning over 10 hectares, this quiet sanctuary offers a rare glimpse into Tokyo's past, with centuries-old graves, winding stone paths, and seasonal beauty that makes it a favorite among locals and travelers alike. Home to over 7,000 graves, including that of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun of Japan, Yanaka Cemetery is not just a resting place but a walk through Japanese history. Unlike Western cemeteries, it feels more like a park—with cherry trees arching over the lanes in spring, golden leaves in autumn, and a calming silence all year round. Did you know? Many of the graves here belong to samurai families, writers, artists, and politicians who helped shape modern Japan.

Nezu Shrine – Description for Viator Listing Step into old-world Tokyo at Nezu Shrine, one of the city's oldest and most beautifully preserved Shinto shrines. Nestled in the historic Yanaka/Nezu neighborhood, this hidden gem dates back over 1,900 years and offers a stunning blend of spiritual atmosphere, traditional architecture, and natural beauty. The shrine is best known for its tunnel of vermilion torii gates, reminiscent of Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari, but without the crowds. Visitors can stroll through peaceful paths surrounded by ancient trees, koi ponds, and stone lanterns, making it a favorite for photographers and culture lovers alike. Nezu Shrine becomes a must-visit during the Azalea Festival when over 3,000 blooming azalea bushes create a breathtaking sea of color across the shrine grounds. ⛩️ Did you know? The shrine’s main hall is an original structure from 1706, surviving earthquakes and fires—one of the few examples of Edo-era shrine architecture still standing in Tokyo.

Tennō-ji Temple – Description for Viator Listing Discover a peaceful corner of Tokyo's old downtown at Tennō-ji Temple, a hidden treasure nestled within the historic Yanaka district. Founded in the 13th century, Tennō-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Tendai sect and one of the few structures in the area that survived the fires and destruction of World War II. The temple grounds offer a serene retreat from the city bustle, featuring ancient trees, stone statues, and a quietly powerful bronze Buddha statue that dates back to 1690. Unlike the more crowded temples in central Tokyo, Tennō-ji provides a quiet, contemplative atmosphere—perfect for those seeking a more intimate and authentic spiritual experience. Why visit? Tennō-ji’s calm ambiance, combined with its historical significance and beautiful seasonal gardens, makes it a favorite stop for culturally curious travelers exploring the old neighborhoods of Tokyo

I didn't know what to...

I didn't know what to expect but it was better than I thought it would be. Leo was well versed and knowledgeable about the places we visited. On a walking tour bear in mind the weather it's going to be too hot or too cold. There was quite a few places we visited and I would recommend doing Old Tokyo. I for one enjoyed it. On a personal note I have arthritis on my knees and was struggling a bit so Leo worked at my pace and made sure I was ok. I appreciated that. If I do manage to come back again I will definitely do a different tour. Thanks very much Leo. It was a pleasure.
