Amazing snorkeling experience with green sea turtlesTripadvisor review: Waikiki, Hawaii: Turtle Canyon Snorkel ExcursionMy wife and I enjoyed an amazing snorkel tour offered by Living Ocean Tours. Their Turtle Canyon tour goes to a reef located about half a mile offshore from Waikiki, where green sea turtles have a "cleaning station," so that they sit on the reef about 35 feet below the surface of the water while reef fish feed off the algae on the turtles' shells. The turtles come up for air every 15-20 minutes, so there is an opportunity to experience them up close. Very important, though, not to touch or spook these amazing creatures. The tour staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and offer special attention and instruction to novice snorkelers (shout-out to our primary guide, Missy). When we went on a Thursday morning in June 2026, the boat was filled to capacity, so that we were sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with others. There were a few other boats with tour groups at the reef. We snorkeled as a group, but once in the water it didn't feel crowded and there was just enough freedom to explore a bit freely. The tour takes about 2 hours, with about one hour in the water. Snorkeling equipment is provided. Smart to arrive via public transportation--we drove ourselves but then struggled to find parking. The attached photos are ones I took using a waterproof camera. We started the tour with wildlife sightings then went a more secluded area to swim and the kids had the best time with slide, trampoline and floating mat. Okay first and foremost...Viator review: Waikiki, Hawaii: Turtle Canyon Snorkel ExcursionOkay first and foremost let’s talk about sea sickness. I’ve been on many types of boats and have snorkeled two other times in the past and have never gotten sick before until this tour. The boat goes pretty far out to sea and the waves rock the boat badly. 1/3 the group was sick. So take something before you go even if you’ve never experienced sea sickness before. The other complaint I had was you have an inflatable vest not a true life jacket. It didn’t seem like it would float but it does I just hope one never gets torn while someone’s wearing it if they aren’t a strong swimmer. They felt a bit unsafe to be honest. I suggest you be a decent swimmer for this tour because this is a bit more legit snorkeling than I’ve done in the past (walked directly into a shallow bay from a beach in Puerto Rico and road a boat into still water around a crater in Maui). Otherwise, the snorkeling was great! We saw two sea turtles and lots of pretty fish. Another part of our group saw a reef shark. The guides were really kind and helpful. Basically deep open water. Did see lots of fish & one turtle, which was cool. Most staff were super knowledgeable & friendly (shout out to Aaron, Lucy, & Chase). You do not venture off on your own much for this excursion. Guides try to keep you all together in a group & give you information on what they see underwater. The guides keep a very close eye on everyone and maintain strict control throughout the experience. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll probably appreciate it much more than I did. We did get to see turtles, which was great. But... You constantly have to react to instructions, move as a group, and follow commands almost like you’re in the army. You’re only allowed to go where you’re told, and it felt like we spent more time making sure we weren’t doing something wrong than actually enjoying the ocean. The guides seemed happiest when they were talking to each other in the water. Maybe that’s just how it came across to me, but it definitely affected the trip. I’ve been snorkeling on Maui and Kauai, and those experiences were completely different. They take you to a beautiful reef, say, “Take your time,” and let you explore at your own pace. You feel relaxed and free, surrounded by incredible marine life. Here, it was difficult to actually enjoy the snorkeling. It felt as if the tourists were an interruption to the guides’ day rather than the reason they were there. I don’t know whether there are other places to snorkel with turtles on Oahu, but it seems this is simply how all the tours operate at this particular location. So my criticism is probably aimed more at the experience this site requires than at this specific company.
