Vatican is a must but would be more pleasant without being so overcrowded

When in Rome you have to go and see the Vatican City. The skip the queue was fairly painless but the actual Vatican is overcrowded and not pleasant. They should limit the amount of people at one time. Apparently there's over 22,000 people that walk the halls on an average day. We were rushed through the Sistine Chapel and didn't get to see everything as it was overcrowded and very unpleasant. I also didn't like all the gift shops, it didn't sit well with me. It should be more about the history not the overpriced trinkets.
