Actually, just use the money and sample interesting items yourself

We took the Tsukiji Market food tour with Food Ninja and unfortunately came away disappointed. Our guide was very friendly, punctual, and clearly trying his best. The issue was not the guide's attitude, but rather the content and value of the tour itself. This tour may be suitable for visitors who want a very basic introduction to Tsukiji, but it did not feel like the "expert" (or even an insider) experience that was advertised. We expected a guide with deep food knowledge who could introduce us to standout vendors and help us discover the market's best offerings. Instead, the tour felt very formulaic and scripted. Over the course of approximately two hours, we were served tamagoyaki, three small sashimi samples (amberjack, scallop, and scraped tuna), tuna nigiri (lean, medium-fatty, and fatty tuna), mochi, and a matcha drink. We were not allowed to make substitutions when we asked. The pacing was also disappointing. About an hour into the tour, we had only eaten the egg and sampled broth made from dashi powder at a shop that sells dashi products. Frankly, sampling instant dashi powder was not what I expected from Tsukiji Market. It felt more like something I would encounter in a supermarket than a world-famous food destination. Meanwhile, we walked past many of the foods that make Tsukiji famous—king crab legs, grilled wagyu, seasonal uni, and many other exciting specialties—but none of these were included. We left feeling like we had spent a substantial amount of money to eat some of the cheapest and least interesting items available in the market. Some of the food choices were also puzzling. The tuna sashimi was served with a packet of soy sauce and shared among strangers in the group. The sashimi platter itself was accompanied by bottled orange juice, which felt like an odd pairing. The tuna nigiri featured generous slices of fish, but the rice quality underneath was disappointing. The biggest issue was value. As a family of four, if we had simply taken the money we spent on this tour and explored Tsukiji ourselves, we could have tried dozens of different foods that caught our eye. We signed up for an "insider" tour because we expected efficiency—a knowledgeable guide who would help us cut through the noise and direct us to the absolute best food in the market. Instead, we found ourselves walking past many of the things that looked and smelled incredible while spending much of our time on inexpensive, basic items. In hindsight, we would have been better off simply following our noses, buying whatever looked exciting, and sampling far more of what Tsukiji has to offer. Even if we occasionally picked a dud, we could have moved on and tried something else while still spending less money overall. It would have been both a better value and, in our opinion, a more enjoyable experience. To be fair, there were a couple of positives. We were able to skip one line for tuna, and the guide showed us the rooftop seating area, which was useful. Again, he was a genuinely nice person. Ultimately, though, we felt we would have been better off exploring Tsukiji on our own. If you're looking for an in-depth food-focused tour led by someone with extensive culinary knowledge, strong local recommendations, and access to the market's best bites, this was not that experience.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We are very sorry to hear that the Tsukiji tour did not meet your expectations, and we sincerely apologize that the experience fell short of what we aim to provide. We're pleased to hear that your guide was friendly, punctual, and did their best throughout the tour. However, we understand that the overall content, food selection, pacing, and value did not match the insider experience you were expecting. We appreciate you explaining these concerns so clearly. Our goal is to introduce guests to a variety of high-quality local foods while also sharing the history and culture behind Tsukiji. We understand from your comments that the tour felt too structured and that you were hoping for more unique and memorable tastings, as well as deeper culinary insight into the market. We also understand your disappointment about not being able to make substitutions and feeling that many of Tsukiji's iconic specialties were passed by. Your feedback has been shared with our team and will be reviewed carefully as we continue improving the tour experience, including the pacing, food selection, and overall value we provide to our guests. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We truly appreciate your honest feedback, and we're sorry we didn't deliver the experience you were looking for. Ninja Food Tours Team

The price didn’t match the results

Our tour was with Keiji. I had high hopes based on the reviews online. We came hungry having read several reviews that said come hungry and be ready to eat! We missed breakfast and somehow our first “bite” of a sip of Daishi wasn’t until 10:30 am (tour started at 9). I felt our time would have been better spent in the market and trying all the delicious foods we were seeing rather than a side tour to the shrine. The food we got was less than what I read in other reviews and not as high quality picks - one of the things we were given was chopped tuna meant for chirashi bowls and not sashimi. I had read other groups had ramen, dumplings, and so many other dishes. Ours felt like a rip off and we felt we probably could have just led our own way through the market and did our own self tour. We didn’t feel that we learned anything new about the market, the people working there, or the specialty foods there. This was the tour I was most looking forward to and walked away highly disappointed. At the end of the tour Keiji asked if he could give us recommendations for our stay. We asked for recs in Ebisu and his “recommendation” was to ask someone on the street for a good izakaya. Overall Keiji was nice but I would hesitate to go on another Ninja Food tour.

Operator response

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are very sorry to hear that the Tsukiji tour did not meet your expectations, especially as it was the tour you were most looking forward to. We understand your disappointment with the pacing, food selection, and overall value. Guests should feel that the tour offers more than what they could easily experience on their own, and we’re sorry that this was not the case for you. We’re glad to hear Keiji was kind, but we also understand that the experience should have included stronger market insights, better food guidance, and more helpful local recommendations. Your comments have been shared with our team so we can review the tour content, timing, and guide training carefully. Thank you again for your honest feedback. We sincerely apologize for the disappointing experience. — Ninja Food Tours Team

Great tour! Guide gave us a lot of history, context and insights. He orchestrated everything we ate. Totally hassle free. Skipped all lines, including the tuna tasting line which was long. Keiji was our guide. Great guide! Spoke great English. Was super nice to all 4 of us (me, my wife and daughters) and wanted to be sure we were having a good time. Highly recommend it!

Great Tsukiji market tour.

An all-around fantastic tour! Our guide Kaz was super friendly and expertly led us to very good, authentic stalls at the Tsukiji market. The food was excellent – from incredibly fresh fish to heavenly strawberry mochi, everything was included. The small group size made the experience very personal and relaxed. An absolute recommendation.
