Fun food tour of Tsukiji with Yoko

We did an 8.30am tour on a Tuesday morning for approximately 3 hours which was great fun. We would have preferred a Wednesday but learned the market is essentially closed on Wednesdays! Don’t eat before you go! You will be eating all morning! We met a number of Japan Wonder Travel Guides around 8.15am out the front of the Tsukiji Hongwan-ji Temple who were all friendly and spoke excellent English so it was easy to work out who we would have guiding us for the morning. Yoko took us and another family (6 people in total) into the temple for a quick look, then into the fish market. All stalls were trading and it got busier as it got later so we felt lucky to have Yoko showing us around. We got to taste excellent fish cakes, beautiful summer fruit, wasabi sesame seeds, sweet omelette and freshly grilled wagyu. Yoko also purchased some fish and fruit as she showed us around and we were able to share these on the rooftop at picnic tables which was a treat! To finish our tour we were taken to a lovely restaurant where the chef prepared a sushi bowl and we were then able to make our own and eat that too! This tour is an excellent way to taste lots of different foods and learn where the better shops are, and a really nice introduction to Japan/Tokyo. We stayed on after the tour and bought matcha and a whisk etc, personalised chopsticks with our names written in Japanese (on the spot) and other trinkets and gifts. Thank you Yoko for a great morning!

Operator response

It is with profound joy that we receive your truly exceptional feedback. It's wonderful that your 8:30 AM tour on a Tuesday morning at the Tsukiji market proved to be so enjoyable, and we appreciate your valuable insight regarding Wednesday closures. Your helpful suggestion to "not eat before going" is excellent, given the abundance of culinary delights awaiting discovery. We are especially pleased that our team members at the meeting point were amiable and fluent in English, making for a smooth start. Yoko's expert guidance through the temple and into the vibrant marketplace, even as it grew busier, clearly enriched your exploration, ensuring you sampled a variety of superb dishes. The unique touch of Yoko purchasing items to share on the rooftop, followed by a visit to a delightful restaurant for a chef-prepared sushi bowl and the opportunity to craft your own, sounds like a truly magnificent culinary journey. This excursion evidently served as an outstanding introduction to Japan/Tokyo, allowing you to discover numerous culinary treasures and prime shopping spots. It's also gratifying to learn that you continued your exploration independently afterward, acquiring matcha, personalized chopsticks, and other memorable souvenirs. We will certainly convey your appreciation and high praise directly to Yoko. We profoundly appreciate you sharing this comprehensive account of your memorable journey. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome you back to Japan for future captivating culinary adventures.
