Itinerary
Enoshima is a charming island located near Kamakura. From Enoshima, you can enjoy a stunning view of the surrounding sea and, on clear days, catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji rising majestically on the horizon. One of the island's most revered deities is Benzaiten. According to local legend, Benzaiten created Enoshima and later subdued a five-headed dragon that was terrorizing the region. A visit to Enoshima isn’t complete without a stroll down Benzaiten Shopping Street, a charming, old-fashioned shopping alley. Lined with small shops and restaurants where you can find unique souvenirs and sample delicious Japanese street food, including local seafood, ice cream, beer, and so on.
Enoshima Shrine consists of three main shrines: Hetsumiya, Nakatsumiya, and Okutsumiya. It was originally built to honor the deities of fishing and maritime transport; however, over time, it also became associated with the gods of music, wealth, and good fortune. The main complex features an octagonal building that houses one of Japan's three most revered statues of Benten, the patron goddess of Enoshima. Since Benten is also the goddess of wealth, some visitors choose to wash their money in the pond at the shrine for good fortune.
Lake Ashi was formed 3,000 years ago and is a serene lake surrounded by mountains, serving as the symbol of Hakone. The beautiful contrast between the white clouds, the blue lake, and the green mountains creates one of the most popular views in Japan. Regardless of the season, visitors can enjoy Lake Ashi from a sightseeing vessel designed to resemble a pirate ship.
Hakone sightseeing cruises, inspired by European battleships, offer stunning views of Mt. Fuji reflected on the serene surface of Lake Ashi, surrounded by beautiful nature. Three uniquely designed ships sail on the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacular sight of them passing each other. On a clear day, views of Mt. Fuji in the distance and the bright red torii of Hakone Shrine seen from the deck of one of these ships can create unforgettable memories.
The ropeway provides panoramic views of the volcanic landscape of Owakudani. As you ride, you'll witness the bottom of the Owakudani valley, along with sulfuric smoke rising from it. Once you disembark from the cable car, you'll be greeted by the distinctive smell of sulfur and see steam rising into the sky.
Owakudani is a geological marvel and a highlight of any visit to Hakone, formed approximately 3,000 years ago. Japan is one of the most geologically active countries in the world, and Owakudani exemplifies the power and beauty of the Earth. The steaming vents are impressive and can be found in very few other places around the globe. You can truly sense the force of nature as you watch smoke billowing from the surface of the volcano. While you're there, be sure to try the local specialty: Kurotamago, or black eggs, are unique to this area. These eggs are boiled in the hot spring water, which gives them their characteristic black shell. It is said that eating one of these eggs will prolong your life by seven years.

Nice group size. Guide was nice and willing to take photos. Would have enjoyed the tour much more if the guide had gave information about the sights and destinations we are seeing. Got more insight from Chat GPT than guide. Mt Fuji was not viewable on our day, nothing can do about that. But didn’t understand the gondola to side of Hakone and meaning of black eggs until we did more research on it. Similarly when we got to Enoshima - super neat area and was highlight of the tour. But again, no context to meaning of the shrine, the area, etc. Generally, Viator tours are on point with info, fun facts, and a great guide. This one sadly fell way short and was a full day trip of our time.

Our trip, arranged through Make My Trip and Viator was conducted by Gogoday Tours in Tokyo. Our Tour Guide, Eric, was fantastic, knowledgeable with a strong hold on English besides having a great sense of humor. He guided and assisted us through the day, allowed us adequate time to enjoy every moment and being a great sunny day, led us to various spots for great photo shoots including that of the Mount Fuji. Eric was simply great!!!

Overall the experience wasn’t as we expected, our guide didn’t interact with us unless for the touristic parts. The explanation was plain and very basic. We were expecting to have more information about the country, about the zones, historial facts and something to understand more about the local culture, specially because there was a lot of driving. My wife is afraid of heights and we found out during the tour that the ropeway was mandatory if you take the boat, we thought that they were independent, so at the end we couldn’t do it because you need to cross the river and then a mountain, so there is no other path. We know that to see the mountain depends on the weather but I consider there should be an advice on that, so we can decide to go or to use the money in another tour because at the end, that was the reason why we took this tour. The driver was very nice.

An Tong was our guide for this packed day. Even though the itinerary of this tour was packed, the longer bus rides in between places was very relaxing compared to our busy Tokyo days (multiple bus naps were taken). An's guidance and instructions were clear and she ran a tight ship re: scheduling to ensure we got to each activity on time. The only feedback I have is that she could consider providing a little more history for each site we visited. Otherwise a great tour!
