Itinerary
The full extent of the beauty of Stuðlagil Canyon was hidden to the world until about 15 years ago. With the contruction of a dam nearby, the water level of the glacial rive here dropped by about 10m. We can now see the full beauty of the spectacular patterns formed here by basalt rock columns. Stuðlagil has emerged as something of an instragram favourite in recent years, with the turquoise waters of the river contrasting pleasingly with the austure grey beauty of the sheer basalt columns. It takes 60 minutes to reach Stuðlagill, and we enjoy about 60 minutes on location.
Gufufoss waterfall is something of a hidden gem. Situated on the outskirts of Seydisfjordur, Gufufoss stands 88ft tall. It gets its name from the Icelandic "gufu", meaning steam, referring the the water spray caused by the plunging falls. It will take us around 75 minutes to from Stuðlagil to Gufufoss.

Our guide was a knowledgeable & friendly tour leader named Kjartan. Robert was the bus driver. Kjartan clearly knew all about the highlights of this area & was very receptive to questions. The weather was a beautiful sunny day which may have contributed to being one of the loveliest sightseeing days of our trip so far. The snow covered pass, the different shades of blue between sections of the melting ice and the numerous waterfalls that we saw made for a very memorable trip. The walk down to the canyon is steep but you can clearly view the unique canyon by standing in one of the viewing areas without dealing with the steepness of the trail. We did have a minor hiccup with the bus but Robert easily solved the problem & we proceeded on our journey without any further difficulty.
Awesome! Loved the canyon, the shuttle bus, the tour guide, the schedule was kept, the whole tour was magical!
If you’re coming off a cruise that needs to tender to the dock, PLEASE plan that you will probably NOT get off the boat right away. Cruise lines let their shore excursions off first. We got our tender ticket early and still had to wait about an hour until we could get off the ship. Luckily we made it in time, but many people didn’t. This in no way detracted from this tour, just a heads up when scheduling your tour time and get your tickets for the tender EARLY! This was a wonderful tour. Our guide Tanya and driver T.P. were excellent. Stuðlagil Canyon was beautiful. Just a fair warning, if you take the stairs, there are 239 of them. Each way. You can take an inclined walkway as another option. There is a small place that sells food/drinks but plan to spend some time in line. Also, when we arrived in the parking lot and everyone got off the bus, the restrooms were packed! By the time I made it up the stairs, the line was much better. We stopped by a couple waterfalls which were amazing. I definitely recommend this excursion!
Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The excursion provided beautiful scenery . I am pleased with the value of this excursion.
A very pleasant day. The guide was both professional and very friendly, sharing anecdotes and Icelandic customs that made the trip even more enjoyable. The visits were excellent, with plenty of time to see and photograph them. Good value for money.
By crossing the montain from the port we discover more beautifull landscape and waterfalls and finally the new gem of ICELAND the Studlagyl Canyon. Our guide was excellent. The departure from the port could be improved.
Excellent introduction to Iceland. Scenic drive was spectacular! Canyon & waterfalls other worldly! Tota, our tour guide, was insightful, knowledgeable & quite entertaining. We were lucky enough to hear her sing an Icelandic song! Bus was super comfy & very modern.
