Sad place of history, never to be forgotten. Such a pretty island with such sad stories

It would be better if the groups were half of the size. It felt slightly rushed and gave the feeling of being herded from spot to spot in the actual prison. There didn’t seem any time to actually wander around freely to explore at your own leisure once the tour had been finished. If this was possible then it wasn’t communicated. That said the individual guides were fantastic and I believe that by getting the school groups though they do have the ability to have an important impact on the younger generations. Also, we would have stayed much longer and spent more money if there was a cafe with a deck area overlooking the water.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback. We're pleased to hear that you found the guides engaging and appreciated the important role they play in sharing the history of Robben Island with visitors and younger generations. We also appreciate your comments regarding the group size, pacing, and café facilities. As the tour is operated by the Robben Island Museum, these aspects are managed by the museum, but we value your suggestions and understand how additional free time and expanded visitor facilities could further enhance the experience. Thank you for choosing HYM Cape Tours, and we hope to welcome you back on another adventure in the future.

Disappointing tour company

I would not book this tour but with this company. They did not provide me my ticket in time to catch the boat I was supposed to be on. They did not communicate the information I needed to know to find my way. They did not communicate that I needed to be on the boat at noon or I would be stuck until 2 pm. So, I spent 2 hours sitting on the dock waiting for a later boat and lost most of my afternoon. Do not book here.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely regret that your experience did not meet your expectations. We would like to clarify that the Robben Island Museum operates two ferry vessels for certain departures, with the second vessel typically leaving only 10–15 minutes after the first. As you were a last-minute booking, we were able to secure your place on the second vessel, which departed according to the museum’s scheduled time. We are sorry to hear that the boarding process and communication caused frustration. Your feedback is valuable, and we will continue working to improve the information we provide so that future guests have a smoother experience.

Robben island experience was great, the issue is the agency that charges double the amount you pay when you buy tickets from the harbor. This is a robbery because when I call to cancel i was denied to do so

Operator response

Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed your Robben Island experience. We’re sorry you were disappointed with our cancellation policy. As stated at the time of booking, cancellations made at least 24 hours before the tour qualify for a full refund. This policy exists because Robben Island tickets often sell out, and last-minute cancellations prevent other guests from booking. The same 24-hour cancellation policy is applied by Viator, Tripadvisor, and Booking.com. Our pricing reflects not only the ticket but also the advance booking service, reservation management, and customer support we provide.

Pilgrimage to Robben Island

Wish we had more time on the island. Would have preferred to stop at the quarry rather than a Cafe. Loved listening to the history and narratives of the ex political prisoner. It just felt rushed but thankyou

Operator response

Thank you for your feedback. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed listening to the firsthand stories shared by the former political prisoner during your visit to Robben Island. We understand your wish to have had more time on the island and at the quarry. The tour operates within a fixed schedule set by the ferry and island operations, which can sometimes make parts of the experience feel rushed. We truly appreciate your comments and thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Crowded and poorly organized.

Once you got off the ferry, the tour started with a crowded bus tour. You were not allowed to leave the bus, and I found it very uncomfortable driving around the island. On the plus side, the guide was nice and informative. The actual tour of the prison I felt was unfortuntelt pretty poor. You saw a few areas, but was poorly organized and didn't really give you a good feel of the place. The tour was run by an ex-prisoner though who shared some excellent stories which was the best part of the trip. I would either skip this tour, or if you really are interested book one of their private tour packages. On the private tours you can walk around many of the areas and I imagine have a much better experience.

Operator response

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re pleased to hear that you found the guide informative and that you enjoyed the firsthand stories shared by the former political prisoner, which many guests consider the highlight of the visit to Robben Island. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

Surprisingly Uplifting

The half-day tour with pre-booked tickets was seamless from start to finish. I expected it to be heavy (which it was), but our ex-prisoner guide brought so much warmth and gentle humour that it didn’t feel overwhelming. Hearing him talk about hope and resilience while walking through the cells actually left me feeling inspired rather than sad. Perfect way to spend a morning in Cape Town.

One stop at a Time…

Did the half-day Robben Island tour with pre-booked tickets and it was exactly the right length. The ferry was smooth and relaxing, but once the ex-prisoner guide started speaking inside the prison, everything changed. He had this incredible ability to drop serious truths and then casually joke about prison food that had us all smiling. Standing in Mandela’s cell made me feel embarrassed about complaining when my coffee gets cold. A powerful, humbling morning done right.

Operator response

Thank you for your thoughtful review. We’re delighted to hear that the half-day experience at Robben Island was both meaningful and well paced. The combination of the ferry journey, the historic prison visit, and the personal stories shared by former political prisoners creates a powerful experience that stays with many visitors long after they leave the island. We truly appreciate your kind words and are pleased that the tour provided such a memorable perspective on South Africa’s history.
