Itinerary
Start the day with private pickup from your hotel or agreed meeting point in Porto. Travel comfortably in a premium private vehicle toward Guimarães. During the drive, your licensed driver-guide introduces Guimarães and its place in the formation of Portugal, preparing the historical context for the morning.
Guimarães Historic Centre Walking Tour Begin a measured walk through the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Guimarães, one of the most coherent medieval urban cores in Portugal.
Oliveira Square, Oliveira Church and Saint James Square Explore the civic and religious heart of medieval Guimarães through Oliveira Square, Oliveira Church and Saint James Square. This opening sequence establishes the city’s atmosphere, sacred memory and urban intimacy.
Rua de Santa Maria Walk along Rua de Santa Maria, one of Guimarães’ most emblematic historic streets. It connects the lower civic area with the monumental zone and reveals the city through façades, noble houses and urban continuity.
Palace of the Dukes of Braganza If selected, visit the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, one of northern Portugal’s most important noble residences. The visit offers insight into courtly life, political symbolism and dynastic power.
Church of São Miguel do Castelo Stop at the small Church of São Miguel do Castelo, traditionally associated with the baptism of Portugal’s first king. Its simplicity and location near the castle give this stop strong symbolic value.
Castle of Guimarães If selected, visit the Castle of Guimarães, the city’s defining medieval fortress and one of Portugal’s strongest symbolic landmarks. Its walls and elevated setting connect the city directly to the origins of Portuguese identity.
Lunch and Free Time in Braga Lunch is intentionally flexible and not included in the base price. Guests may choose a traditional restaurant or a lighter option in Braga’s city centre. Braga Historic Centre Walking Tour After lunch, begin a walking route through Braga Historic Centre, structured for clarity and minimal backtracking.
Arco da Porta Nova and Garden of Santa Bárbara Visit the Arco da Porta Nova, Braga’s ceremonial threshold into the historic centre, followed by the Garden of Santa Bárbara, one of the city’s most elegant public spaces.
Braga Cathedral — Sé de Braga If selected, visit Braga Cathedral, Portugal’s oldest cathedral and the spiritual and historical core of the city. Its architectural layers reveal centuries of religious and artistic development. Braga Cathedral — Chapels and Upper Choir If selected, add the Chapels and Upper Choir visit for greater depth and architectural detail inside Braga Cathedral.
Bom Jesus do Monte Funicular If selected and available, ascend by the historic Bom Jesus Funicular, opened in 1882 and celebrated as the world’s oldest water-powered funicular still in operation. Working as counterbalance of one another, both go up and downhill alternately and simultaneously along two parallel tracks over a course of 274 meters. Each booth has the capacity to 39 people, including the driver. This 19th century lift is the first to be built in the Iberian Peninsula. Optional (2 € p/person)
Bom Jesus do Monte Arrive at Bom Jesus do Monte, one of northern Portugal’s most iconic sanctuary settings. The site combines architecture, devotion, landscape and panoramic views in a powerful final sequence.
Sanctuary Visit and Staircase Setting Explore the sanctuary surroundings and the famous staircase setting, one of Portugal’s most recognisable sacred landscapes. The terraces, fountains, chapels and views create a memorable close to the day.

Carlos was an amazing tour guide and a fount of information about Guimaraes and Braga. Although the tour was supposed to begin in Porto, Carlos graciously drove to Guimaraes where I was staying. Jose was amazing! He picked us up at our hotel and began the tour with lots of interesting insights about Porto as we left the city. We learned so much about Portuguese culture and he and his family as well as about the sights he was showing us on the tour! We had toured with Carlos the day before and he had alerted Jose that my mom cannot walk long distances so he did his best to accommodate her so that she did not miss anything! He planned the day around her and what we wanted to see and we had a wonderful time!

It’s also great to know that the coordination with Carlos helped us accommodate your mother’s needs so she could enjoy the experience without missing a thing. 2 years ago, we went with Carlos to Fatima and had a memorable experience (highly recommend) so when we found out we had a port day in Porto, we immediately contacted Carlos. He picked us up at the port and took us to Guimaraes where we explored the castle, the palace and city. Then we headed to Braga. We stopped to see the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro- both these places are not only beautiful but spiritual and peaceful. We then headed into Braga where we explored the town and Cathedral. Carlos made sure we saw every possible site while still getting us back to the port on time. We consider Carlos a friend and will definitely call him again if we get back in the area. His love of Braga and his faith made our day exceptional!
Thank you for your kind review! We’re so happy you chose to tour with Carlos again and that you enjoyed discovering Guimarães and Braga. These places are truly special, and it’s wonderful to hear Carlos’s passion and care made your day unforgettable. We look forward to welcoming you back anytime! Best regards, Ana
