Description

Many years ago Malacca was one of Malaysia’s most sought-after destinations. Before Kuala Lumpur transformed from a malaria-infested jungle into a polished high-rise capital, Malacca was one of the greatest trading ports in Southeast Asia. Over time it changed from a thriving port into a sleepy backwater city and lost its spot as a must-visit destination to its high-rolling cousins. Yet in recent years, Malacca has been revived as a top-pick holiday getaway due to its many historic attractions. Home of the well-known Nyonya cuisine, it’s a popular destination for tourists who want to catch a glimpse of Malaysia’s unique heritage

The Melaka River winds its way from Dutch Square and goes past Tan Boon Seng Bridge. During the Portuguese invasion of Malacca, they seized this bridge and cut off communications between the two sides of the river, effectively dividing Malacca into two and leading to Malacca’s defeat. There are a few other bridges along the Melaka River worth mentioning. Besides the Tan Boon Seng Bridge, there is the ‘Ghost Bridge of Malacca’ (a pedestrian bridge which links Kampung Pantai to Kampung Jawa) and the Old Market Bridge (which links Kampung Hulu to Jalan Kee Ann and the old Central Market). It used to be a picturesque scene of fishing boats berthed along the riverbanks here, but it is now mostly rows of Chinese restaurants. Fun fact: one of these restaurants was featured in the Hollywood blockbuster Entrapment, starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones. Nyonya cooking is the result of blending Chinese ingredients with various distinct spices and cooking techniques used by the Malay/Indonesian community. This gives rise to Peranakan interpretations of Malay/Indonesian food that is similarly tangy, aromatic, spicy and herbal. In other instances, the Peranakans have adopted Malay cuisine as part of their taste palate, such as assam fish and beef rendang. Key ingredients include coconut milk, galangal (a subtle, mustard-scented rhizome similar to ginger), candlenuts as both a flavoring and thickening agent, laksa leaf, pandan leaves(Pandanus amaryllifolius), belachan, tamarind juice, lemongrass, torch ginger bud, jicama, fragrant kaffir lime leaf, and cincalok a powerfully flavored, sour and salty shrimp-based condiment that is typically mixed with lime juice, chillies and shallots and eaten with rice and other side dishes.

Don’t recommend this trip

Horrible experience. Didn’t have the traditional meal as advertised in the description. Driver was just driver and not a tour guide. Left me to figure things out on my own. Car was gross with food and stains and the seatbelt was broken and the back seat was very uncomfortable which made th 2+hour trip each way miserable. Car had bad odor

Mr Shah (tour guide and driver) is great - professional and friendly and he provided interesting background info.

Great tour to see historical sites in Melaka on a day trip from Kuala Lumpur. Mr Shah (driver and guide) was friendly and professional. He provided interesting background about each of the sites we visited. I feel I was able to visit all of the most important sites in Melaka and this was an efficient way to do so. Mr Shah picked me up early and gave me enough time to visit each site. He is a good driver and I felt safe. Had a nice traditional lunch along Jonkers Walk. Saw the floating Mosque as a bonus.

Operator response

Melaka is a fascinating heritage city with many important historical landmarks, including areas around Jonker Street, which is known for its historic shophouses and vibrant atmosphere. It’s great to know that Mr. Shah’s professionalism, friendly service, and informative explanations helped you better appreciate the history and culture of the places you visited. We’re also glad you enjoyed the traditional lunch along Jonker Walk and the visit to the beautiful floating mosque—these are truly memorable highlights of the tour. Malacca is worth a visit, but organized excursions are not the best choice.

With a bus we were picked up in our hotel. After two other pick-ups, we left for Malacca. The drive to Malacca is about 2 hours where guide Stephen told non stop about KL and Malacca. In the morning until lunch we visited churches, forts, ... each time with lots of information given by the guide. Lunch was in a side street of the center and was tasty. In the afternoon we had a 2.5h free time to visit the center and this was top. After a 2 hour drive back we were dropped back at our hotel. As far as we were concerned, far too much time was wasted on some of the sights in the morning and the explanation by the guide was far too much and too lengthy. I advise everyone to book a private transport (bus, grab,...) to Malacca and then visit everything yourself. Malacca is small and everything is centrally to visit.

Great day trip

Matha picked us up in a great air conditioned car which was most welcome. Matha kindly made a comfort stop on our way to Malacca and provided us with bottles of water during the day. Matha then dropped us at various points of interest which was great however, we originally thought he would accompany us to the temples, forts etc. We stopped off in Jonker Street for lunch which was okay but would not eat there again. Matha was extremely helpful, courteous and very polite the whole day. Chris and Jude Moss UK

We would recommend this tour.

Malacca was removed as a port of call on our cruise so we chose this day trip from Kuala Lumpur before embarkation. It was an interesting and enjoyable tour. I had been there over 60 years ago so I wanted my wife to share the experience. We think the itinerary needn't be so detailed. We chose to cut out one or two in order to spend longer in the places that were of most interest to us.

Never again !

We have been booking tours with Viator for a few years and this must have been the most disappointed experience we ever had. We paid for a whole day private tour from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca, clearly it said water, lunch and many attractions entry/admission included. We did not get our welcoming water from the tour guide (Helmisamarudin). He drove us to Malacca and took us to only 2 out of 10 attractions listed on the tour program. He then told us to take a 10 mins river cruise (which we paid for) then walk around on our own, get lunch and meet him back at the car to be taken back to Kuala Lumpur. We had to pay for our own lunch and water! So the $340 AUD we paid for the whole day tour was just for transportation. Could have got to Malacca and back for 1/2 the price. Can not believe Viator contracted this guy.

Average destination, average tour

Its an ok town, with a few things to see. Don’t expect this to be a guided tour, its just a driver taking you from stop to stop, following the itinerary regardless of creating its own logical order. Most of the times we didn’t know where were we going or even what we were going to see, just a hand signal to get out of the car and walk.

Malacca 1 day trip from KL

Malacca is spectacular, with many tourist attractions of great historical value. You should consider at least 2-3 days, as the 1-day tour only gives a vague idea of the city. However, our guide was very attentive and managed to give us a good idea with detailed explanations of the places we passed. Being Portuguese, we had high expectations of seeing what remains of Portugal's presence in Malacca. Unfortunately, it's down to a door in the old fort (A Famosa) and a neighbourhood outside the city where you'll find several restaurants serving dishes with a few (very few) Portuguese flavours. Overall, it was very nice to spend the day at Malacca!

Malucca private tour

Great information, good driving, all the bases covered. Excellent lunch, and nothing was hurried. Since the mosque was closed, our driver/guide took us to the Portuguese settlement.
