Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) is one of the most prominent features of the city. Even visitors not looking for it will likely stumble upon the large park of over 120,000 square meters. Its trees, lawns, and walking paths are in stark contrast to the surrounding downtown area. Before the bomb, the area of what is now the Peace Park was the political and commercial heart of the city. For this reason, it was chosen as the pilot's target. Four years to the day after the bomb was dropped, it was decided that the area would not be redeveloped but instead devoted to peace memorial facilities. Admission Fee: ¥200

Hiroshima Castle (広島城, Hiroshimajō), also called the Carp Castle, is a good example of a castle built on a plain in the center of a city as opposed to hilltop and mountaintop castles. Its main keep is five stories tall, and its grounds are surrounded by a moat. Also within the castle's precincts are a shrine, some ruins and a few reconstructed buildings of the Ninomaru (second circle of defense). Hiroshima developed as a castle town, whereby the castle was both the physical and economical center of the city. Built in 1589 by the powerful feudal lord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima Castle was an important seat of power in Western Japan. While it was spared the demolishment that many other castles met during the Meiji Restoration, like the rest of the city, Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945.

A great experience

Minori was an outstanding guide. She met us promptly and organized our day efficiently. We really appreciated her accompanying us to the museum and sharing more information . Another highlight was the fantastic lunch! We never would have known where to go and it turned out to be one of our best meals in Japan! Highly recommend !

Operator response

Thank you so much for your kind words! I am thrilled to hear that our lunch together was one of your best meals in Japan—that Okonomiyaki was definitely a highlight for me too. I’m also so glad we found those 29cm New Balance shoes at Hondori ! It was a relief that the store had the size in stock. It was a privilege to accompany you to the museum and share those important stories with you. I’m glad we could organize the day efficiently so you could make the most of your time in Hiroshima. Thank you for being such wonderful guests. I hope to see you again. - Minori

Moving tour of Hiroshima

Our guide, Harry, met us at our ship and accompanied us to our first stop, the Peace Park. The park and museum experience is a very emotional experience. It became too emotional for several of us and we had to cut this part of the tour short. However, I expressed the view that every international leader should be required to take this tour and someone else passing by added, “often”. Although I couldn’t finish this part of the tour I am not sorry for having taken the tour; perhaps I’ll try again in future. Afterwards we headed to SOGO., a giant department store. I didn’t notice/understand the shopping concierge component of the tour until we started. We decided that we wanted a nice sit-down lunch and the SOGO customer care agent found the precise restaurant to meet our collective tastes. We dined in one of the store’s restaurants in a private room that the concierge was able to get us without prior notice even though it was during the lunch rush. Our guide,Harry, coordinated with the agent throughout, making sure she understood what we were looking for. After lunch the concierge met us again for a shopping tour. There were a few items that we had forgotten to pack and she guided us to the correct floor, the correct department, and coordinated with the sales staff to get the items we needed. Afterwards we headed to the basement level for a tasting tour of their two stories for food court. We were still too full from the lunch we had, but we did a few tastings before we had to beg off. The concierge was disappointed that we didn’t want to try more tastings. Throughout our guide, Harry, was attentive and very adaptable he was very pleasant and easy to work with. I would recommend this tour to everyone visiting Hiroshima and I would recommend Harry as a guide.

Hello Glenn, Thank you so much for your wonderful review comment. Your kind words have made me very happy. I am truly delighted that you enjoyed the tour. I am sorry that your visit to the Peace Memorial Museum was such a traumatic experience for some of you. The Peace Memorial Museum is always a deeply moving and painful place for visitors. However, I am very relieved to hear that you enjoyed the traditional Japanese lunch. It was an honor to guide you. It was a pleasure guiding you, and I hope to welcome you again. Please take care. Kind Regards, Harry
