Kootenay National Park is a land of ice and fire, a place of contrasts, with valleys and canyons carved by glaciers and grasslands shaped by fire. Take a scenic drive along its historic highway to see it all unfold.

Admission included60 min

Just over the continental divide, where the Rockies cross from Alberta into British Columbia, lies one of our favourite local secrets: Marble Canyon. Here, an easy 1.3-kilometre out-and-back trail crosses several bridges, offering incredible views across the canyon and down into the startling turquoise water of Tokumm Creek below. If you like a learning moment woven into your hikes, stop to marvel at how this little creek carved through the creamy-coloured sedimentary rock over millennia to create the canyon. Otherwise, just marvel at the beauty.

Admission included15 min

Step off the Trans-Canada Highway and into a piece of Canada's railway history. This roadside viewpoint in Yoho National Park looks out over the Lower Spiral Tunnels, an engineering feat built in 1909 to help trains climb the steep grade through Kicking Horse Pass. Watch as freight trains disappear into the mountainside and reappear, having spiraled through solid rock to gain elevation. Time it right and you'll see a train crossing directly above itself on the switchback, a rare sight most visitors never know to look for. Beyond the trains, the viewpoint offers sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and forested valley, making it a worthwhile stop even if no train happens to pass through.

Admission included90 min

It's pretty easy to figure out where Emerald Lake gets its name. If the colour of the lake isn't enough to move you, the surrounding landscape certainly will. The President Range mountains surround the lake, forming a natural amphitheatre of the grandest scale, with towering peaks and forested banks. As our guest on this small group tour, you'll get guaranteed, expedited entry right to the shoreline. Here, you'll have 1.5 hours to explore the lakeside trails, rent a canoe, or simply hang out under a tree and watch the world go by.

Admission included15 min

Natural Bridge is an impressive natural rock formation spanning the Kicking Horse River west of Field, where the slower-moving waters from the Field valley flats begin their descent through a canyon to meet the Amiskwi River. The lookout gives you a variety of vantage points to take in the formation, with interpretive displays explaining the physical processes at work. It's an easy stop, reachable in minutes on Emerald Lake Road. Rushing water sculpted the Natural Bridge from what was once a waterfall, a powerful reminder of how much influence water has in shaping the landscape. The softer rock beneath the bridge's hard limestone band eroded faster over time, and as fissures widened, the river eventually carved a new path beneath the outcrop entirely.

Admission included60 min

At 1,224 feet, Takakkaw Falls is the tallest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies and the second tallest in Canada. As snow and ice melt in early summer, they fuel the cascading water, creating a picturesque mist through the pines. If you're lucky, you may spot a rainbow or two at its base. It's fitting that the waterfall takes its name from the Cree word for "wonderful," pairing perfectly with the national park's name, Yoho, itself a Cree expression of awe and amazement, similar to "wow."

Yoho National Park might be one of the smaller parks in the Canadian Rockies, but it packs the biggest punch. Located a little further up the road from the busy, bustling Lake Louise and Banff National Park, Yoho has an intimate feel despite being filled with immense, snow-capped mountains and thundering waterfalls. This beautiful region is heaven for explorers looking to escape the ordinary, and it belongs on everyone's Rockies bucket list. On this tour, your local expert Radventures guide decides the best order to visit each of these locations, based on weather conditions, big bus tour schedules, and a handful of other factors we consider as locals to make sure you get the most authentic experience of the day. As one of our signature small group tours, we'll also take you to a few secret local spots with incredible views along the way.

Fantastic day with multiple amazing views and locations

Outstanding trip with a wonderful guide, Georgia was phenomenal and very informative. We’ve been in Canada for seven days, and this was the highlight of the trip.

Operator response

Highlight of seven days in Canada is a seriously high bar and we're really proud Georgia cleared it. The Hidden Gems route has a way of surprising even seasoned travellers and having Georgia bring it to life with her knowledge makes all the difference. Really glad it was phenomenal and hope to have you both back out here again sometime.

You won’t be disappointed!

This is an exceptional tour that lives up to its name Hidden Gems. Our guide Aaron was knowledgeable and entertaining-with a priority on safety and inclusion. Pick up was easy at the hotel and on time. Delicious picnic lunch at takakkaw falls. Dress for walking - some hiking and stairs in marble canyon.

Operator response

Aaron on the Hidden Gems route with a picnic lunch at Takakkaw Falls and Marble Canyon thrown in, that's a properly full day. Really glad the safety and inclusion angle came through too, it matters a lot on a tour with varied terrain. The practical tips you've left for future guests are spot on. Hope to have you back sometime.

Jaw dropping sites with an exceptional guide

Taylor was beyond informative and made our visits to the “hidden gems” fun and exciting! His knowledge of the area was apparent and his use of time on the van between stops was very well balanced, using some to engage us and other time to just let us enjoy. At each of these magnificent stops he walked with us, provided extra tidbits, played photographer, and just ensured we were getting the most out of our visit. This was our third Radventures experience and Taylor’s performance solidified our view that with this company, excellence is the norm!! The one cautionary note for this tour… we started in Lake Louise which, due to geography, caused us to miss the first “gem” (Marble Canyon in Kootenay National Park) as it occurred before our pickup. (We knew about this in advance.) While the rest of the tour is most definitely worth it, anyone buying this particular tour should just know that starting in Banff Instead of Lake Louise will add some content.

Operator response

Three Radventures tours and excellence being the norm is about the best thing a guest can say. Taylor has a real gift for reading the energy in the van, knowing when to talk and when to just let the view do the work, and making sure nobody leaves a stop without having actually experienced it rather than just photographed it. Really glad it delivered again. On the Lake Louise pickup note, thank you for flagging that so clearly and for being upfront with other guests. Anyone starting from Lake Louise should check in with us directly before booking so we can make sure the itinerary works for their situation.

Great tour- beautiful and very educational!

Very educational and entertaining. Great scenic tour! Max did a great job of explaining the area geology, animals, and landscape. Highly recommended!

Operator response

Thank you so much for the wonderful recommendation! Max's depth of knowledge across the geology, wildlife and landscape of the area is what makes the Hidden Gems tour so genuinely enriching, and we love that it came across as entertaining as it was educational. We'd love to welcome you back to discover more of the Rockies soon!

A great natural experience around Banff

Unexpected highlights with " Taylor" our driver and nature guide throughout the day was a bonus. Communication from Radventure's prior to the day with intinerary change outside of their control was also appreciated. This tour required a good level of agility due to the hikes on rough tracks to see some amazing places.

Operator response

Thank you for such a thoughtful review! We're really glad the communication around the itinerary change landed well, keeping guests fully informed ahead of time is something we take seriously. It's also wonderful to hear that Taylor made the day such an unexpected highlight, his knowledge and passion for the natural environment really do add something special to every stop. Those rough tracks are absolutely worth the effort for what awaits at the end! We'd love to welcome you back for more hidden gems soon!

Bee is the best!

Bee was great! She took us to Maple Falls and Emerald Lake as our major stops and a few other hidden gems. We had the best bear sighting of our trip on this tour. Bee was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. We enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend it… and ask for Bee😀

Operator response

Thank you so much, and we love the recommendation to ask for B at the end! 😀 Emerald Lake and Maple Falls are stunning stops and we're so glad the hidden gems added something extra to the day. The best bear sighting of your trip on top of all that is a brilliant result. B will be absolutely thrilled to read this and we'd love to welcome you back again soon!

Small group tours are the best!

We took the “Rockies Hidden Gems” tour from Banff. We visited Yoho and Kootenay National Parks and saw Emerald Lake, the Takakkaw Falls and Marble Canyon, just to name a few. Radventures offers tours in smaller vans/buses, which we much preferred over the large bus experience. Our tour guide, Cam, was excellent. He was friendly, kind, knowledgeable about the sites, and struck the delicate balance between talking and allowing some quiet so we could appreciate was we were seeing and experiencing. Strongly recommend!
