Depart from Athens at 9:00 AM to Kalabaka with our coach-bus and admire the beautiful Greek landscapes during your trip. Shortstop midway to Meteora. Arriving in Kalabaka around 13:30 , our highly educated Tour Leader will be waiting for you. Visit Great Meteoron , the biggest and oldest monastery of Meteora. The Great Meteoron Monastery founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios. Inside, visitors can explore historic chapels, impressive frescoes, and a small museum. Its hilltop location also offers stunning views of the surrounding rock formations and valleys. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, his monastery later added small cells so that monks could live there in peace and seclusion atop the rock. Also known as The Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration, it takes its name from the second church St. Meteorites built. The successor of Saint Meteorites was a monk named Saint Joasaph who continued to build more cells, as well as a hospital for them, renovating the churches there as well. The Monastery thrived in the 16th century when it received many imperial and royal donations.
Admire the monastery of Varlaam , the second largest in Meteora, known for its rich history and beautiful setting. Built in the 16th century, it features striking frescoes, a remarkable wooden barrel, and a peaceful courtyard. The climb is rewarded with sweeping views and a deep sense of serenity. Varlaam built three churches by laboriously hoisting materials up the face of the cliffs. After his death, however, the monastery was abandoned for two hundred years until two brothers who were monks, Theophanes and Nektarios Apsarades, came to the rock in the 16th century and began to rebuild the churches in October of 1517.
See the hermitage of Badovas and the secret hermit caves. The Hermit Caves of Meteora offer a glimpse into the earliest monastic life, where ascetics lived in solitude high up in the cliffs. Carved into the rock, these simple shelters reflect a deep devotion and spiritual discipline. Nearby, the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Badovas is built into the side of a cliff and blends naturally with its surroundings. It’s a peaceful and lesser-known spot that tells the story of Meteora’s humble beginnings.
Admire St Stephen (Agios Stefanos) Nunnery the most accessible in Meteora, connected by a small bridge instead of stairs. Admire St Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos) Monastery. Saint Nicholas Anapaphsas Monastery is the smallest in Meteora, uniquely built on a narrow rock with limited space. Founded in the 14th century, it features impressive frescoes by the renowned painter Theophanis Strelitzas. Despite its size, the monastery holds rich spiritual and artistic value. Its compact setting offers a peaceful and intimate experience.
The Monastery of St. Nicholas of Badova / Nikolaus Kofina was founded c. 1400 in a rock cave at Badovas. Centuries ago, reaching this secluded skete was anything but easy. Monks entered through a cave below the cliff, using a wooden ladder to climb to the higher chambers carved into the rock. Nearby, on the same dramatic cliff face, you can still see the hermit caves of Agios Grigorios, or St. Gregory. The Badovas hermit caves are especially significant because they were home to some of the last hermit monks of Meteora, who lived here more than two centuries ago in complete isolation and devotion. Even today, traces of that extraordinary way of life remain. Old wooden ladders, platforms and scaffolding can still be seen clinging high to the cliffs of Pyxari, offering a powerful glimpse into the physical endurance and spiritual commitment of Meteora’s monks. Together with the small monastery nearby, the Badovas caves form one of Meteora’s most fascinating monastic sites.
See the city under the rocks and learn the amazing history. Kalambaka is the gateway town to Meteora, nestled at the foot of the towering rock formations. It blends traditional charm with modern comforts, offering cozy tavernas, shops, and local hospitality. After the tour, board the coach for the return journey to Athens. Midway through the drive, enjoy one more refreshment stop by the sea near Agios Konstantinos, where you can relax & choose dinner, if you wish, before returning to the city. Arrival in Athens is expected late in the evening, with drop-off at Larissa Station, where your day began.

- Appropriate clothing for everyone is required to enter the monasteries. For ladies skirts by the knee or longer are required. No pants for ladies, no shorts, no sleeveless shirt. For men sleeveless clothing and shorts over the knee are prohibited.
- Please make sure you have cash for the monasteries 5 euro each entrance. There is no ATM machine in the area.

We had an amazing time! The monasteries were beautiful and the views were breathtaking! This was one of the highlights of our trip! Our bus driver and tour guide were both wonderful! I must admit, that the food was not great if you choose the lunch option. I highly recommend that you bring plenty of snacks, and water! It’s an extremely long day! I highly recommend this tour!
I was really, really happy that I booked this tour. I had considered going by myself, but it would have been so complicated to organise, especially without a driving licence. I did the one-day trip, and I was afraid it would be too tiring, but it really wasn’t. The sites were absolutely amazing, like something out of a fantasy movie! The time dedicated to the three monasteries was enough considering the limited time we had: 1 hour at the Great Meteoron Monastery and 45 minutes at each of the other two. There were also many stops along the way at specific viewpoints with great views. The lunch was decent. The only thing I would change would be to have buses with TOILETS! Come on! One 30-minute stop during 4.5 hours on a bus without a toilet is crazy to me! So if you need to pee and you’ve been drinking a lot because it’s hot, you’re basically trapped! This should not be normal. I was so afraid of needing to pee on the way back that I almost didn’t drink anything for the whole afternoon because I was scared of ending up in an embarrassing situation in the middle of the bus trip! Apart from that, I really loved the tour and would definitely recommend it.

We understand your concern about the bus toilets, but we respectfully disagree legal stops are required and buses in Greece normally don’t have onboard restrooms. It’s a long day. 3-4 hours each way and 3-4 hours there. Overall, it’s marvelous locations and beautiful sites. Guide was great. Bus was good but the truck stops were not so good. Skip the lunch if you can find alternatives.

A very enriching experience. Our guide MARIA was very kind and very fun, plus she knew the history of the area perfectly. Highly recommended to do from Athens if you don't have a car. It is not necessary to get the ticket with food since the tour makes several stops where you can eat and drink and you don't need any specific ticket or to get the menu that most people get. The monasteries are paid for separately there when you access them. It is five euros per person per monastery but the tour allows you to stay on the bus if you don't want to visit one or if there are people who have difficulty climbing stairs, even so just for the views and the landscape it is worth going even if you didn't visit any monastery, although obviously these also have a lot of charm and a very interesting history. On the tour we took we entered the 3 monasteries they took us to, although the largest and most important monastery was closed that day for a religious celebration. Highly recommended if you have a free day in Athens, because the tour starts around 8am (although it can also be earlier) and you arrive in Athens around 10 at night. From there you can take an Uber to your hotel, generally it is usually about 4 to 6 euros.

The Meteora experience is one not to be missed. I picked the 14 hour tour (~4 hrs transit time each way, and 6 allowance to visit the 3 monasteries). The bus ride was very comfortable with a half-way stop, and lunch before touring the monasteries. The guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the monasteries. Overall it was a great experience.

This was a great and informative experience where our tour guide (Clement) gave an entertaining explanation about the area and the monasteries themselves, with inclusions about the geology of the area. In addition to this, he helped when we did not have cash and enabled a stop at an ATM nearby so we could still enter the monasteries. Which also had free cover ups for those of us not covered appropriately due to the heat. While we did have to change over busses at one stage it was an understandable requirement due to travel and providing a comfortable environment for passengers.

Great tour. It does require walking up steep stairs. However it was well worth it. Our tour guide Clement was terrific! We loved it.

I’m rating this experience on the following scale: 1 = Horrible, 2 = Poor, 3 = Okay, 4 = Good, 5 = Exceptional. Overall, I would rate this experience as good. The biggest highlight is the destination itself—Meteora is absolutely breathtaking and well worth the visit. However, there are several areas where the tour could be improved. First, there was very little communication about what to expect throughout the day. At the beginning, we were only told that it was a four-hour drive. There was no mention of bathroom breaks (which happen approximately every two hours), the lunch stop, dinner stop or approximate time of return (10-11pm). None of this is clearly listed in the tour itinerary or description. We only knew about these stops because we had read previous reviews. The lunch stop is right before visiting the monasteries. It’s cafeteria-style food and overall good. My partner is vegetarian and was able to find something to eat. I recommend selecting the lunch option when booking unless you plan to bring your own food. There aren’t really any other dining options nearby, so you’ll likely end up eating there anyway. The guiding itself was the weakest part of the experience. The commentary didn’t really begin until we were close to Meteora, which was disappointing considering the many historical sites you pass on the drive from Athens. The guide is also not allowed inside the monasteries, so most of the information provided felt fairly superficial. I was hoping for more historical context and deeper explanations about the monasteries, their significance, and the events that shaped them. The tour visits three monasteries, with approximately 30–45 minutes at each stop, which felt like a reasonable amount of time. The final stop is dinner around 8:00 p.m., and I’m very glad I had read the reviews beforehand. My recommendation is to skip eating there if possible. Like lunch, it’s cafeteria-style, but because it’s the end of the day, the selection is limited. There are no visible prices, and the staff repeatedly encourage you to add items like salad or juice, which are not included with your main dish. It’s easy to spend much more than expected, and the sales approach felt a bit pushy. Also, don’t rely on the meal photos shown on the booking site—they don’t accurately reflect what is served. Overall, I still recommend this tour, especially if you only have one day to visit Meteora and don’t want the hassle of driving yourself. The transportation is convenient, and the scenery is spectacular. However, if you have access to a car, you’ll have much more flexibility to visit additional monasteries, explore the surrounding area at your own pace, and stop at local wineries and other attractions.

An amazing trip, we left Athens at 8am and we were back at 10pm, long day but very well worth it, the driver will stop every 2 hours so not bad, you don’t really feel the long drive.
