Description

Many visitors to Lancaster seek out meaningful personal contact with the Amish community. Imagine visiting three Amish properties where our longstanding relationships allow you to become their guests during your stay. This exclusive tour is limited to 14 guests, and provides the rare opportunity to meet and talk to various Amish where they live and work. The three stops: Visit an Amish farm at milking time, go behind-the-scenes with an Amish craftsman, and then sit and chat with an Amish family right in their home.

Itinerary

Admission included

Stop 1: Amish Farm When we arrive at the farm, we enter the barn to learn about the milking process firsthand. You may be surprised to learn that the Amish do not milk cows by hand. You will also discover how milk is kept cold in the bulk tank with “Amish electricity.” Other aspects of farm life may also be included. Stop 2: Amish “Cottage Industry” With the price and scarcity of farmland, many Amish have started their own small enterprises, making everything from gazebos and furniture to farm equipment and quilts. These “home businesses” have become the subject of books and articles emphasizing the balance these entrepreneurs achieve between work and family. Our visit may be to a harness or carriage maker, basket weaver, greenhouse, leather or wood worker, among others. An actual demonstration is normally a part of this fascinating stop. Stop 3: Amish Home Visit To conclude our evening, we travel scenic backroads to a distant farm in the countryside. As we step inside the house, we find that friendly conversation awaits as we sit, chat, and visit the way the Amish do, talking informally without TVs, IPhones or computers. It comes as no surprise that strangers soon become friends.

Mildly Disappointed - Tour Guide Made the Difference

My tour began on a sour note as our guide, tom, informed us that we would not be able to visit an Amish home on that day. I was highly disappointed as this was THE reason that I chose this particular tour. Not the guide's fault though. Tom was a very good tour guide. Did his best to make sure that everyone was enjoying their experience. He was full of home town humor and it was very evident that he was deeply involved in this community. The Amish businessmen we encountered were all very friendly and all of their children we met were very polite and well mannered. I would fully recommend this tour. Recommendation: I would hope that in the future, scheduling with the local Amish is better organized in the future. They are the reason people go on this tour. It is disappointing when part of the tour don't happen and very awkward when the tour rolls up on a location that is not aware that someone is coming. Thank goodness for tour guides who make up for the shortcomings.

Short July trip from NYC!

Our tour guide, Tom was great. The entire experience was worth it but not for the price we paid. It would have been worth it if the company offered perks like milking a cow or experience a buggy ride. Something to think about.

Disappointment Averted

My wife and I really enjoyed our trip. The guide was informative and fun. The Amish hosts were also very friendly and we enjoyed their presentations. Our only disappointment was we were not able to spend any time in an actual Amish home. I chose this tour specifically for that reason. The lack of availability was a disappointment but Tom made up for very well.

So intriguing!

The Visit In Person tour was EXCELLENT! So great to meet the Amish people and get to talk to them about their life and work. Our tour guide, Kent, was SPECTACULAR! He was so knowledgeable about the Amish and friends with many of them. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants a peek into the Amish way of life.

A valuable cultural Amish experience!

It was an immersion interactive trip. It presented the daily hard work and long days for the Amish to survive. Sitting in the home with a young couple and their children, seeing how much they enjoyed telling their heartfelt stories was an emotional experience. Our seasoned guide Kent, obviously fells a strong connection to his Amish neighbors. Time and money well spent, a cultural experience our grand children will forever remember.
