När du anländer till Berat börjar din resa vid det legendariska slottet Berat, en fästning som går tillbaka till 300-talet f.Kr. Uppflugen på en kulle med fantastisk utsikt över hela dalen, är slottet inte bara ett monument - det är en av de få fortfarande bebodda fästningar i världen. När du utforskar dess stenvägar kommer du att upptäcka hur Berat invaderades tre gånger av osmanerna, romarna och bulgarerna, innan du blev ett mäktigt furstendöme under den ädla Muzaka-familjen på 1300-talet. Din promenad fortsätter till Onufris ikonografiska museum, som ligger inuti den vackert renoverade 1700-talskatedralen Saint Marys antagande. Efter slottet leder turen dig in i hjärtat av staden - de traditionella kvarteren Mangalem och Gorica. Dessa kvarter är sammanlänkade av den eleganta Goricabron över floden Osum och är kända för sina vita ottomanska hus, staplade perfekt på sluttningen, vilket gett Berat dess smeknamn: De tusen fönstrens stad.

Berat Castle is one of the most important historical and cultural monuments in Albania. Built on a high hill, it offers a stunning view of the city and the Osumi River. The castle has a history that dates back to antiquity, but was strengthened and took its present form during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Inside it are old churches, characteristic houses and cobblestone alleys, which still preserve the spirit of past centuries. It is a living testament to Albanian history and heritage

We took a private one-day tour to Berat from Saranda with Mariglen. He was very punctual and we left promptly at 8am. Mariglen was thoughtful, kind and considerate. He looked after us all day and accommodated all our needs. The day was long but it really worth the trip as Berat is stunning, and it gives you a break from the crowds and heat of Saranda. The price included breakfast in the beautiful Tepelene and audioguides in the Iconography Museum in Berat. Really recomended tour agency and a great guide experience with Mariglen!

The main attraction of Berat, the castle is definitely worth the walk up for amazing views over the area. Make sure to walk around the perimeter so you can see all the viewpoints including the byzantine church.
