First class tour today with Simphiwe. Arrived at the meeting point early after having an introductory WhatsApp message so we knew who we were looking for. Very helpful. We learnt lots about South African history and also what it is like to live here. He told us some great personal stories and shared some interesting experiences. Food was excellent and restaurants were ones we wouldn’t have found on our own Overall an excellent experience. 100% must do when in Cape Town
This experience was a vibrant celebration of African cuisine and culture. Each dish was rich in flavour and history, served with heartfelt storytelling in a warm, welcoming setting. More than a meal, it felt like a journey across the continent. Highly recommended for curious travellers and passionate foodies.
We had an outstanding time on the food tour! Both Carol and Simphiwwe were extremely friendly and made us feel welcome during the tour. We enjoyed multiple dishes from a variety of different African countries. Our guides did a great job explaining the origins of the dishes and the customs behind the meals. We really enjoyed the Ethiopian restaurant at the end of our tour. This was a fantastic way to immerses ourselves in the African culture and completely get “out of the box” for the day. Highly recommend if you have a sense of adventure and willing to try new foods. Keep up the good work! Thanks for a fun day.
We got picked up with no problem and with a nice text to let us know when and where the driver would get us. The drive with Murendeni was very lovely. He is a nice guy and helps a lot with is happy attitude, to get in the mood for the food-tour. Then Nkosi, our food-guide took over and showed us special, not everyday dishes which we where happy to taste. It's a good choice of different styles. Between the restaurants Nkosi showed us a lot of districts and told us the story behind it. After the Tour Murendeni made sure we where getting home safe and easy. Overall it was a nice experience and can just recommend trying it out. Thanks for this special evening!!
This tour was excellent and our guide was great. He provided much more than just a food tour and the foods of Africa we ate were very good.
Simphiwe was a wonderful guide. My husband and I shared our tour with a lovely family from Italy and were taken to 3 different locations. Our guide was full of information about the food, culture and history of Cape Town and the surrounding areas. The food was really good (completely new tastes to us!) and the amount provided was just right. The restaurant staff at each place was very friendly as well. It was a walking tour but the distances between each stop were just several blocks. We happened to be staying at the holiday Inn which was central to all three restaurants. At the end of the tour, we only walked two blocks to get home and we felt perfectly safe.
My sister and I booked this tour as did 5 other members of our group. This tour should not be booked as late as this was offered. It started at 5:00 and all the workers were closing up shop and going home. It was getting dark and cold and with the workers going home and the areas we had to walk through seemed to some to not be worth the risk after dark. Our guide was FANTASTIC, and I did not personally feel unsafe, but some did. We were walking through areas our hotel told us to avoid. Also, we did not understand that this tour was a walking tour with very long distances between restaurants 1 & 2 and # 3 and the wine tasting. It was cold after dark and we were not prepared for the distances we were walking. The first restaurant was trying to close when we showed up. Our guide did very well putting a good spin on the meal, but we had to wait 30 minutes, nothing was served to drink, even water, and one of the servers had cut their finger and were serving and preparing food while bleeding into a bandage/finger covering. That was very off putting to those who saw it and they refused to eat. The food prepared was authentic and the vegetable trays were lovely, but it was not seasoned and there was only sauce in one small bowl of beef stew. We had to wait 30 minutes for the food. We then walked a very long way to a not very good Ethiopian restaurant and we had the restaurant to ourselves which seemed weird. We had to wait 30 minutes for food there, but were able to order drinks at least. Both restaurants severed full course family style meals. Two members of our tour did not want to wait for food nor did they feel safe, so they left via uber. Our guide did everything possible to keep us safe and get us to our cars. By the time the rest of the group finished the second meal it was already almost 7:30. We still had the Malawaian restaurant to go and also a 13 minute walk after that to the wine part of the tour. We were full, cold and tired and not having a good food experience, so we ended the tour. The guide did point out very interesting things and landmarks while we were walking. He stayed with us to make sure we got our ride home ok.
Simphiwe was a very nice guide clearly with the best intentions so I have no criticism of him personally but we did not feel safe AT ALL walking through the areas of Cape Town covered in the tour, particularly in the dark evening hours. (We were six women with one slight guide.) We abandoned the tour and Ubered back to our hotel before it was half through. There were no wine parings offered as described (no beverages at all at the first stop). At the second restaurant visited there were no other patrons except for a slumped-over man at the next table. We were also taken aback by the request to sign an indemnity immediately before the tour.
It's was a last second booking, and I'm so glad we went! Simphiwe was an incredible guide and he shared much about not only the food we were eating, but about the lives of different African people, the history of the places we visited, proper dining etiquette, and his good humor and heart. He was warmly greeted by the owners and workers of the 3 different locations we dined and we felt welcome. We left the tour stuffed with delicious foods and with more knowledge. A five star tour for sure!
The guide was excellent. He was very informative and the food and wine was superb. I enjoyed learning about the Black African wine makers. The food from the restaurants included South African,Mali, and Ethiopian food. They were also excellent.
