Our tour guide, Sam, was fantastic! We got to experience local tacos and unique cocktails and had great conversation the entire tour. Sam was also able to point out so many local options for other dining experiences (bakery, chocolates, etc.). Highly recommended.
We had an amazing food tour in San Miguel de Allende with Sam. I’ve done food tours all over the world, and this one truly stands out. Sam’s knowledge of Mexican cuisine was incredible — clearly helped by the fact that he is actually a chef himself!! — and he also shared so much interesting history and cultural context throughout the tour. He was also just a genuinely enjoyable person to spend the evening with: warm, engaging, and a great conversationalist. The food and drink selections were excellent, the pacing was perfect, and the venue choices were varied, thoughtful, and really showcased different sides of San Miguel. We left full and happy, but never overwhelmed between stops. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone visiting SMA. Worth every peso and then some!
We booked as a couple and met some more fun, well traveled people in the group. Jessica made the town come alive, not just through the enjoyment of the food. We met the owners of these establishments, heard their stories, and felt like we truly began to understand the city. The food was of course fantastic as were the drinks!
We had a great time on the tour with Jessica. We ate some amazing food, saw the city center, and had great tequila and mezcal along the way. Our guide introduced us to some interesting people and we stopped in a variety of unique places. Our group happened to go during the rainy season but it didn’t dampen the mood, just made things more interesting. Would definitely recommend!
Awful tour. Please book with a more locally oriented person if you'd like a Taste of San Miguel de Allende. We did the trip as a private group with the bride's family. Unanimously from near 60's in age to mid 20's agreed this tour was the absolute worst part of the five day Mexican wedding adventure. To be fair our entire group for the wedding with split between Mexican and US nationals so we were expecting a bit less of a "bland" experience. Our guides promised history of the city and tastings. The history ended with some short anecdotes about famous authors doing more drinking than writing and women not always being allowed in cantinas: IE, look at the piss trough. Considering the rich, significant history of SMA this told us how much our guides thought of the locals. We heard more about how the locals start their day with a shot and how the SMA catholic churches align with progressive sexual ideology than any history of the town. I like'd to have Pride today and in the future. While respecting history; without bending it. For the jacked up price of $108 USD per person a few shots, a 10oz beer, and a few sweet drinks paired with single tacos or less at each stop was really disappointing. A total of 5 drink tastes for the entire experience. There tour guides are making a racket off us. So many better value options in town with people you'd go home proud to have paid for their services. There are even free tours where you tip and buy the drinks as you go. People are too scared to be honest in reviews when pressured by small businesses to support. It's a shame. Again at the group brunch at the end of our trip all age groups agree the tour was a big drag. Most of us wanted to split off and just chat with the people at the bars elsewhere but $108 USD each was too steep to walk away from. As a group we paid at least $2,376 USD for 22 people and were highly disappointed. If you don't get how much of a rip off this is... At $20 USD per person per restaurant for 20+ people, you could enjoy 3-4 half sized drinks as a group still paying above market.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent Tacos and Tequila Walking Tour in San Miguel de Allende. We are genuinely sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations, especially during what was clearly an important wedding celebration for your group. We appreciate candid feedback, even when difficult to hear, because it helps us evaluate how guests with different expectations experience our tours. That said, we would like to respectfully clarify a few points for future readers. Please note the 5 star review from the organizer of this same tour titled EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS. Our tours are designed as cultural tasting experiences that combine local history, storytelling, food, tequila education, and visits to independently owned establishments throughout San Miguel de Allende. They are not structured as unlimited food or drink events, nor as traditional bar crawls. The quantity and pacing of tastings are intentional and aligned with responsible hospitality standards. Regarding the historical content, our federally or locally accredited guides strive to present aspects of San Miguel’s social and cultural history in an engaging and conversational way, including traditions surrounding cantinas, tequila culture, literary figures connected to the city, and the evolving role of public spaces over time. We understand, however, that every group connects differently with storytelling styles and topics. We are especially disappointed to hear that members of your group felt unable to enjoy the experience fully or considered leaving mid-tour. That is never the experience we hope to create. We always encourage guests to communicate concerns directly during the tour whenever possible so our guides have the opportunity to adapt pacing, answer questions, or clarify expectations in real time. We included a customized wedding guide sheet with not only Mexican wedding trivia but also historical information that included prehispanic, colonial, and modern history along with information on the landmarks. As a small locally operated business, we work closely with neighborhood restaurants, family-owned bars, kitchen staff, and guides whose livelihoods benefit directly from these experiences. Pricing reflects not only the food and beverage tastings themselves, but also private group coordination, guide services, logistics, reservations, and the support of multiple local businesses. While we recognize that this tour was seen as not the right fit for your group’s expectations, we do sincerely appreciate you joining us and sharing your perspective. We wish you and the wedding party all the best and hope the rest of your time in San Miguel de Allende created many wonderful memories. Warmly, Vail K
I really enjoyed Sam he was very knowledgeable. He made me feel very comfortable took care of all our needs it was a beautiful experience to meet new people and learn about San Miguel's food and drink culture. He took the extra time to check in with everybody that was in the group. And then at the end he left us in a beautiful place that we all got to know each other a little bit more. He took the time to send all the information of places to go and eat after our tour. I am definitely do it again as a solo older adult I felt extremely comfortable. Thank you Sam for making my trip I'll be back.
Sam was such a great host, knowledgeable, personable, and genuinely passionate about San Miguel. It was just my friend and I, which made it feel less like a group excursion and more like exploring the city with a local friend. We ended up teaching each other slang the whole way through, which made for great conversation and a lot of laughs. The food and drinks were a great mix of new and traditional bites paired with tequila and mezcal selections. Beyond the food, this tour doubled as a great introduction to the city. We left with a much better feel for the history and the culture. Would recommend to everyone and would book again.
We had a wonderful time learning about the history of San Miguel de Allende along with sampling spectacular food and drinks while on the tour. We returned to a couple of the establishments later in our trip because we enjoyed it so much. We had a question and our tour guide Vail emailed us back with an answer within just a few minutes. I would highly recommend the tour.
We absolutely loved this event. We arranged this with our guests coming in early for my daughters wedding. Taste of San Miguel set-up a specific link for the wedding guests. Just days before the event, we were looking at only 7 people, but with all the last minute sign-ups we ended up with 25 so were split into 2 groups do to our size. Every person who attended had a great time and absolutely enjoyed the great food. We were first trying to arrange wine tours but realized the logistics of getting everyone too and from the wineries would be a nightmare. With this, we remained in the heart of Centro San Miguel allowing our guests to continue their night easily. All of the tacos and drinkgs were amazing. This definitely exceeded our expectactions. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable.
Great guide, super nice and very knowledgeable of the city, mezcal and tequila also neighborhoods. I highly recommend his tour guide.
