Vi börjar vårt möte med det häpnadsväckande slottet High Baroque Schönbrunn (byggt för att konkurrera Versailles) med en promenad genom den magnifika formella trädgården, och utforska den barocka landskapsprincipen för sammanflätad natur och arkitektur som illustreras överallt i markens utformning. När vi närmar oss Gloriette, en enorm triumfbåge belägen på en kulle med panoramautsikt över Wiens skogar, minns vi de militära segrarna som gjorde kejsarinnan Maria Theresas regeringstid (1740-1780) en höjdpunkt i Habsburgs dynastins politiska och kulturella dominans i Europa. Parken öppnades inte bara för domstolen utan för allmänheten från 1779, en populistisk gest som avslöjar Maria Theresas kaniga charm som stötande mot hennes undersåtar. Det var faktiskt under Maria Theresas ledning att Schönbrunn-palatset blev centrum för Österrikes imperialistiska politik och centrum för domstolslivet, förutom att fungera som en sommarresidens för en regerande familj som räknade inte mindre än 16 barn! Flera av denna sammanslagna grupp av unga kungligheter överlevde inte till vuxen ålder men palatset bevarar minnet om deras barndom, barndomsommaraktiviteter, sjukdomar och tidig förlust.
Generationer av Habsburgska härskare sätter sin stämpel på Schönbrunn. Franz-Joseph & Elisabeth Apartments berättar historien om ett par som rivits isär av statens bördor. 1854 gifte sig kejsaren Franz Joseph med den bayerska prinsessan Elizabeth (känd bättre under den kärleksfulla smeknamnet Sisi) som föraktade ritualerna i domstolslivet och den utsmyckade miljön i sommarpalatset. Att besöka det påkostade rummet efter det andra ger oss en god känsla av den överdåd som Sisi flydde: matsalen med värdefull servis och ”imperial servetter” i form av en ”fleur de lys” bevittnade otaliga statliga middagar; Ceremoniesalen spelar in de pompösa barockfesten som den var värd, till exempel bröllopet till kronprins Joseph, avbildad i en serie scener av domstolskonstnären Martin van Meytens; det så kallade "Porslinsrummet" (kontoret för Maria Theresa), helt gjort i imitation av dyrbar porslin med orientalistiska ritningar utarbetade av kejsarbarnen. Det unika "Millions Room" tack vare sitt fantastiska pris i gulddukater som betalats för det: föråldrade indo-persiska miniatyrer med rokoko-ramar, vägghängningar tillverkade av ristade palisander från Antillerna gör "Millions-kammaren" till en av de mest åstadkommna kombinationer av orientalisk och europeisk dekorativ konst från Rococo-eran.

The castle was the first destination of the visit to Vienna. Describing it is difficult because the majesty, the beauty, the care of the spaces leave you speechless. The greatness of the Habsburgs is inferred.

Meeting our guide was easy as was getting our tickets, and bypassing the lines to get into the palace. Stefan our guide was knowledgeable, pleasant, fun and focused. We were able to see a great deal of the palace rather quickly, learning more than those around us as his commentary was directed exactly to us and where we were in the palaces, as well as very deep if we asked to dive into any topic. It made the most of our time without any feeling of being rushed, highly recommend.

We took a small group tour with Kristina. As it happened, we were the only two this time so it was more like a private tour. Score! She was wonderful. Friendly and informative. She explained about each of the rooms usage and the history of the Hapsburg family. Not just dates, but who they were personally and their stories which I find more interesting. Not only was it an interesting tour, but she gave us some great recommendations on restaurants, dishes, we should try and some places we should consider visiting. All in all an excellent experience.

Excellent guide inside the castle, a lot of history knowledge, but she live us in the garden without the tour or advise what to see.
