A serene, ethical cat sanctuary, paradise for cat lovers

I visited on my last day in Kyoto, and it turned out to be the highlight of the whole trip. This small, lovely place in a traditional townhouse is not a typical cat café where the cats are treated as entertainment and made to interact with guests. It's a calm, serene experience, you relax in the room and the cats behave completely naturally around you. They can retreat to their own closed-off space whenever they want. Some come over to check you out, some watch from a distance, and others come close for a cuddle, entirely on their own terms. The owner is wonderfully caring toward her rescued cats. You can tell she loves them, and they are all visibly happy and healthy. As a cat owner myself, I could tell immediately. Animal welfare is the clear priority here, and since all the cats are rescues from different backgrounds, the whole place feels genuinely ethical. It's not commercial at all, it's authentic and warm, more like visiting a friend's home than booking an activity. For a cat lover, it was paradise. Worth every yen. The matcha tea ceremony (private session) was a lovely addition and an experience in itself. Thanks to a very good voice-translation app, there was no language barrier at all, even with limited shared language. One tip for future visitors: go in with no expectation of forcing interaction, let the cats come to you, and it becomes magical. Thank you for such a special experience. I will absolutely return. Experience: Cultural / animal experience Admission fee: Worth it Length of visit: 1–2 hours Atmosphere: Calm and serene Crowd size: Small / private Staff: Excellent Best for: Cat lovers, travelers, couples, groups

Wonderful, cat-centred experience

An incredible experience! As a true cat lover I was very hesitant to book any cat cafes during my time in Japan, as I did not want to support unethical practices and treatment of animals. I’m so thankful however that I found UTANEKDO. What a beautiful, safe space you have set up for these cats. They are so incredibly loved and looked after. You can tell that the cats are truly the vision and centre of the cafe and their comfort is put above all else. It was my last day in Japan and I dearly missed my little rescue cat at home - this experience made me so grateful and proud to be a cat lover and owner. The tea ceremony was also lots of fun! Worth every penny. We will be back anytime we visit Kyoto. 😸😻

We created UTANEKODO as a place where the cats’ comfort and happiness always come first, so it is deeply moving to know that you felt that during your visit. We’re so happy our cats could bring you comfort on your last day in Japan. We would be honored to welcome you back whenever you visit Kyoto. 😺
