This is an essential tour for first time visitors to Montreal. It takes in all of Old Montreal and the Port City, basically all the places with red road signs. We met Francois, our guide, who was enthusiastic, entertaining, informative, engaging and personable. He explained the variety of buildings surrounding Place d'Armes, with an amusing story about the two statues outside the Banque Nationale representing Anglophone and Francophone snobs and their dogs. We looked into the cathedral like interior of the Bank of Montreal. We passed the old St James Hotel to enter the Crew Cafe, situated in an ornate old bank building. Passing old storefronts with warehouses atop, we headed towards the Port, walking along Rue St Paul, an old cobblestoned mostly pedestrainised precinct lined by beautiful facades, now containing restaurants and fancy shops. The Place Jacques Cartier was a hotspot of activity. A side detour took in a traditional French garden, then the city hall, before heading down to the Marche Bonsecours, now an indoor shopping mall. Francois showed us his favourite historical photos on the walls, depicting winter mayhem outside this very market, as well as the very busy old port. He then gave us presents of post cards and a list of restaurants, before leaving us to carry on exploring this remarkable area. All in all, this was an excellent introduction to Montreal's old city, taking in some of the most attractive streets and establishments. Francois was superb as our guide, keeping our rapt attention and making it a thoroughly enjoyable 2 hours.

My husband and I really enjoyed our walking tour of Old Montreal with Louise. It was nice to be in a smaller group, and Louise made an effort to interact with everyone in the group individually. I feel like we got a good overview of the area, and the pace was perfect. I think we hit all of the highlights but were not tired out from walking at the end. The handout with recommendations she distributed at the end of the tour was a nice bonus. Highly recommend.
