The crew was friendly and Bear was a fantastic instructor! I can't say enough about his patience, clear guidance, fun spirit. No one in our group had surfed before. Everyone was able to get up multiple times and enjoy the experience. An added bonus, you get to see so many turtles. Would 100% recommend, highlight of our trip so far!
These guys absolutely live up to the hype and all of the amazing reviews! A huge shoutout to Jeremiah and Mariano, our two instructors. Neither of us had ever surfed before, but they made the learning process incredibly easy. They quickly explained the fundamentals, had us practice on the beach, and then got us out on the water in perfect conditions. Thanks to their coaching, we were catching some smooth waves very quickly. As our confidence grew, they gradually let us venture farther from shore while constantly keeping an eye on us, offering encouragement and giving simple, effective tips that made every ride even better. You can tell these guys genuinely love what they do and want everyone to succeed. They made us feel safe and confident. This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Maui. If you’re even thinking about taking a surf lesson, book it—you won’t regret it. You do not need prior experience. And if you have the chance to surf with Jeremiah and Mariano, you’re in the best hands. You guys were awesome. Mahalo!
My two daughters took the lesson and were having the best time learning to surf! The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about surfing, the area and how to teach novice surfers.

The surf lesson was ok and the instructor was also making an effort. The number of participants was 4, which was also the maximum that it should be. Unfortunately, 2 participants arrived 5 min late, even though one was supposed to be there 30 min earlier, and we had to wait for them. The beach section is extremely rocky and not good for walking. What was worst, however, was that it felt like 200 people were being taught to surf there at the same time and there was absolutely no room for a beginner to even ride. During that time, 5 people rode into my board, once two at the same time, and I got off several times so as not to ram others. In addition, only 90 min were left of the paid 2 hours, and by that I mean 90 min from starting to walk to returning the boards and being back at the parking lot. Therefore, my conclusion: it's doable, but it could be better.

You're absolutely right—we do occasionally have guests who underestimate "Maui time"... or more accurately, Maui traffic! 😊 We try to give everyone a chance to join their lesson, even if they're a few minutes behind, because we'd hate for someone's vacation to start with a missed experience. That said, we understand waiting isn't ideal, and we appreciate your patience. We're glad you noticed Austin's effort. He's a fantastic instructor who genuinely cares about making sure everyone has a fun and safe time in the water. As for the location, you're correct that it can get busy. Kalama Park is the only permitted surf teaching area in South Maui, and it's also one of the island's most popular beginner breaks. Sharing waves with other surfers is part of the experience there, although we know it can feel a little chaotic on especially busy days. We do take your comments seriously, particularly regarding the timing. We always aim to maximize everyone's water time while balancing safety, instruction, and getting everyone fitted with the right equipment. Thanks again for your honest feedback. We hope the next time you're on Maui you'll give surfing another shot—hopefully with a few fewer boards trying to make friends with yours!
One of the best experiences we had during our Hawaii trip. My daughter and I went together. My wife and son cheered us from the shore. Our instructor Mike, was so patient and helpful. My daughter was natural and got up on the board her first time. She caught a lot of waves. At age 50+ about 100 lbs heavier, and not as flexible, I was definitely not as good, but I STILL had a great time! The beach was perfect to learn on. Some sharp rocks & coral, but they provide you booties. The water depth was never high enough that your feet couldn't touch the bottom and the breakpoint consistently gave us waves that were fun enough to ride -- but not so big to scare a novice. Added bonus they have a photographer (Kylee) in the water to capture the best moments of your experience. I've added some of these to the review. Our family will treasure these memories forever. Staff did an excellent job connecting with our kids and making their first surfing experience memorable and successful. Bear was a great instructor!
Uncle Mike did a FANTASTIC job teaching our boys to surf for the first time! They loved every minute of being out on the waves! The photos were a great extra to add on too; you won’t be disappointed if you book with Surf Shack!
This was my grandson’s activity. He was so nervous to do this but after meeting Mike and the safety lesson, he was so excited. Mike aka Uncle Mike was incredible in his instruction and making the students comfortable. For a kid that didn’t want to do it at all bc he was so scared, he was wanting to go surfing every day after his lesson with Mike. The girls that do the check in and photography was awesome too. Over all a terrific experience. Would definitely recommend it.
The Surf Shack was great, my son and I took lessons with Viking and he had us up and surfing in no time. If you’re visiting Maui you gotta hit up the Surf Shack for lessons!
