⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Katla Ice Cave tour with Gravel Travel was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip. The ice cave itself was spectacular, and we were fortunate to have beautiful weather (above 20°C & sunshine) and a small group of just 14 people, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the cave without crowds. The scenery outside the cave was equally breathtaking, with rugged green cliffs contrasting against the vast black lava sands. Every turn seemed worthy of a photo, and the landscape truly felt otherworldly. A special thanks to our guide, Gunnar, who was knowledgeable, engaging, and full of great stories. His sense of humour made the experience even more enjoyable and helped make the day memorable. Highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting south Iceland and looking for a unique and unforgettable experience. 🇮🇸✨
The cave itself was like 10-15m, so not much to do there. But it comes with a good guide and a lot of interesting things about icebergs. We were lucky with the weather and visibility, so we had a stop on the way there with a astonishing scenery around.
This was an excellent tour! Our guide, David, was great. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining and an excellent photographer.
This was such an amazing tour. We had the best time with our guide Ingo. We drove to the ice cave with a few picture stops on the way, and Ingo told us all about the geography and history of the area. The ice cave itself was fantastic, it was amazing to see the different layers and the landscape. We also did a bit of exploring afterwards to see different waterfalls and areas near the ice cave and on the glacier. We then made our way home with a quick drive across black sand beach. I would highly recommend this tour, especially Ingo!
Excellent tour. Our guide was very friendly and provided a great deal of information on the glaciers. The hike to the cave was easy and the cave was beautiful. Definitely recommend the adventure.
We did gravel travel. Since Katla caves are covered with ashes and you can't see blue color due to lack of light passing through but still it was breathtaking to see natural ice cave and glacier up close. It was awesome experience. Inco our guide was very pleasant, very happy with his guide.
My husband and I went on the Ice Cave Tour on Thursday, 06/25/26. It was disappointing. This tour was advertised as easy but you had to climb up and down a steep hill to get to the glacier. I’m in very good shape and it was NOT easy. There was an older couple on this tour who had difficulty climbing up the glacier so we had to wait for them to climb up, then they needed to rest and ultimately they had to climb the last part of the hill ahead of the rest us. This took a good deal of time. The tour guide should have told them that they were not going to be able to climb to the top. The tour bus was unlocked, they should’ve had to stay there and then had their money refunded. Also, this tour should not be advertised as being easy so that this doesn’t happen again. The tour only includes 2 caves, which were stunning but it takes less than 5 minutes to walk through each of these caves. This means the majority of the time spent on the tour is traveling to the glacier and you are climbing up to the caves.
So cool to ride to the cave in a large SuperJeep! The guide, Kelly, did a great job mixing in fun along with education of the area (volcanic activity, geology, history of Iceland). We were the only group (9 of us) at the ice cave which helped make the tour feel more intimate. Recommend adding this to your itinerary if you are in Vik for a day!
My most important suggestion is to read the complete description of the tour before you book. I did not. I wished I had so I could have adjusted my expectations. Getting to the Ice Cave was thee experience. And it was great, including the walk up to the cave entrance. But the ice cave itself, is merely a photo opportunity. It's a very cool photo opportunity but that's about. It. The cave is a large hole in the side of the ice cap. It is a single file opening the goes back about 30ft. You walk to the back and then return to the opening and walk out. The information shared was fantastic during the drive and as well as when we prepared for entry. We learned a lot. But the actual cave was kind of a let down. Families with "tween" children should love this. It's very safe.
