Sam is fantastic. He is knowledgeable, personable, patient, passionate about his tour, and a wonderful person with whom to exchange ideas over an approximately four-hour period. This tour was enlightening, inspiring, and eye-opening. We covered so much ground both on foot and by car. He introduced me to people he personally knew - and who obviously liked him - in the township where he used to live. Sam shared his personal experiences in the township with me and, when encouraged, his opinions about the township, the country, and the world. I totally enjoyed my time with him and strongly recommend this fantastic Cape Town experience.
I recommend this tour to anyone and everyone wanting the understand the real and full story of the problems faced by Cape Town's black/coloured population today. It includes a history of apartheid, Mandela's influence and the situation now told through the honest voices of two township dwellers. Sam was highly informative, sharing personal and cultutral experiences which were fascinating, enlightening and enriching. Ndota walked us through the Langa township which was humbling and at times hard to see. We saw both legal houses and illegal squatter dwellings. The cramped conditions, the overcrowding, the insanitary living conditions and the struggle with the 'legal obligations' of the local government were all laid out for us and not hidden. The people of Langa were happy for us to enter their homes, experience the oppressive heat in bedrooms, and the lack of privacy with three families sharing one small room with three beds, one per family. The pre school visit was interesting and the staff were welcoming (unfortunately we were their on Mandy Thursday and most children were away being looked after by elder children). The way the children of Langa were pleased to see us, waving and 'high fiving' was heartwarming and humbling. The township accepted our presence as we were, two white women, without resentment or bitterness.
I recommend this tour to anyone and everyone. It is a MUST to understand the FULL history of apartheid, Mandela’s influence and the problems black/coloured people of South Africa still face, told through the voices of two township dwellers. Sam was hugely informative sharing personal and cultural experiences which were fascinating. Ndoto walked us through the Langa township which was humbling and at times hard to see. The people of Langa were happy for us to go into their homes and experience the oppressive heat in bedrooms and the lack of privacy, with three families sharing one bedroom and one bed for each family. The preschool visit was interesting and the staff welcoming. The way the children in Langa were pleased to see us, doing high fives and waving was heartwarming in what could have been a very uncomfortable experience. The township accepted us as we were, two white women, without resentment.
Sam and everyone involved in the tour were excellent. The tour was safe, extremely informative and fun thanks to Sam’s excellent character. I would highly recommend everyone does this tour! A tip would be to bring a few notes to be able to tip people!
Everyone whom visits South Africa should do this tour. It’s real life away from the city how people really live and the impact of the history on the culture. The guides were amazing and shared stories and homes of those who live there a contrast to the beach and city life, Fantastic best part of our holiday
We highly recommend this tour. It showed us a different side of Cape Town that must be seen. We were made to feel extremely welcome and at ease. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and informative and a really nice guy.
Very informative, a township tour is a must when in South Africa - don’t be just a tourist, be a visitor! Sam is a very knowledgeable person who’s been doing these tours for 20 years, and works with locals. We visited a kindergarten, a hostel (including inside) a souvenir / street art shop, a traditional doctor… Bring cash for donations / tips. Sam did the tour even though I was the only participant. The atmosphere was safe, but seeing the living conditions can be psychologically demanding. Overall, highly recommended!
I took a township tour in Cape Town with Sam, and I’m still genuinely impressed. The tour was incredibly interesting and engaging, and the insights went far beyond what you would normally expect. What touched me most was Sam’s personal story. He didn’t just share facts, but also spoke very openly about his own life. That honesty and closeness turned the tour into an emotional journey for me — I’ve rarely experienced a guided tour that felt this intense and meaningful. Sam answered every question calmly, respectfully, and without any hint of prejudice. I’m truly grateful for that, because this level of openness is anything but a given. I can wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to understand Cape Town beyond the surface — in a human, authentic, and deeper way. Thank you so much, Sam. The only thing I regret afterwards is that you can’t leave a tip via TripAdvisor — the tour was easily worth at least twice what I paid.
It was an interesting and very haunting experience. Sam, the tour guide, has put a lot of effort into conveying background, special features and history, which he has done very well. We will book the tour again soon. Thanks, Sam!
Would highly recommend! Sam is an expert and will answer all your questions with enthousiasm. We drove through Cape Town to visit Distric Six and a small museum about the origins of Langa. Very interesting! Afterwards, Sam dropped us off at Langa, where we explored the township with a local guide from that area. We visited a local doctor, a pre-school and entered some of the houses. He was a very good guide as well, who explains everything in details and answered all of our questions. We came back speechless from what we saw. It is tough, and for us it was an essential part of our trip. We learned a lot about the history of South Africa and Cape Town. Thank you to both guides!
