Den antika Aya Sofya, ofta kallad Hagia Sophia på engelska och ett av Istanbuls mest ikoniska och varaktiga monument på nästan 15 århundraden gammal, har omvandlats från ett museum tillbaka till en moské med ett nyligen dekret från Turkiets president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Byggnaden har klassats som ett museum sedan 1934 efter en deklaration från Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, den första turkiske presidenten och grundaren av Republiken Turkiet. Strukturen, som anses vara en juvel av bysantinsk arkitektur, byggdes ursprungligen som en katedral 537 e.Kr. av den romerske kejsaren Justinianus I. Aya Sofya hade också en nästan fem århundraden som moské när ottomanerna erövrade Istanbul, då kallat Konstantinopel, 1453 och omvandlade byggnaden till ett religiöst utrymme för muslimer.
Istanbuls mest fotogena byggnad var det storslagna projektet av Sultan Ahmet I (r 1603–17), vars grav ligger på norra sidan av platsen som vetter mot Sultanahmet-parken. Moskéns underbart kurvformade exteriör har en kaskad av kupoler och sex smala minareter. Blå İznik-plattor pryder interiören och ger byggnaden dess inofficiella men ofta använda namn.
De bysantinska kejsarna älskade inget mer än en eftermiddag på stridsvagnar, och denna rektangulära arena vid sidan av Sultanahmet Park var deras valplats. Under sin storhetstid dekorerades den av obelisker och statyer, av vilka några finns kvar idag. Det har byggts om på senare år och är en av stadens mest populära mötesplatser och promenadstråk.
Topkapı är föremål för mer färgstarka berättelser än de flesta av världens museer tillsammans. Libidinösa sultaner, ambitiösa hovmän, vackra konkubiner och listiga eunucker bodde och verkade här mellan 1400- och 1800-talen när det var det osmanska imperiets hov. Ett besök i slottets överdådiga paviljonger, juvelfyllda skattkammare och vidsträckta Harem ger en fascinerande inblick i deras liv.
Den färgstarka och kaotiska Grand Bazaar är hjärtat av Istanbuls gamla stad och har varit så i århundraden. Med början som ett litet välvt bedesten (lager) byggt på order av Mehmet Erövraren 1461, växte det till att täcka ett stort område när gränderna mellan bedesten, närliggande butiker och hans (caravanserais) täcktes och marknaden antog den vidsträckta, labyrintiska formen som den behåller idag.

Unfortunately, this tour did not live up to expectations, especially considering the high cost. I actually learned more about Turkish culture and history on a food tour I took than on this one. Our guide rushed us through each stop, often speed walking without giving us time to truly take in the sites or snap photos. Despite knowing I was pregnant, he made no effort to adjust the pace. I often found myself 20–40 feet behind the group of 3 of us, and he never once checked in or acknowledged it. Lunch was another disappointing moment. Not only did he choose an expensive restaurant, but he also allowed us to cover his meal without offering to pay us back—or even saying thank you. Overall, the experience felt impersonal and awkward. We did our best to remain positive: we made small talk, bought him a drink, and my husband even insisted on leaving a tip. But in the end, it felt like our presence and experience didn’t matter to the guide at all. This was especially disheartening because every other part of our visit to Istanbul has been truly wonderful. Sadly, this tour was the one real letdown.

Tour guide was late and creepy towards my female friend, made the time uncomfortable and the information provided went barely beyond placards near key areas. Would not book again or recommend would rather use the free audio tour materials provided at the pavilion.

The Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia were amazing! Our guide was 1 1/2 hour late on picking us up! I lost 2 hours of sleep!

Like most Viator tours I have done in foreign countries, the driver was late to pick up (30 minutes), but once we finally started, everything went smoothly. Beza is a friendly guide and informative. Full day tour, and I saw what I wanted to see.
