Ricardo was not only personable but knowledgeable! He made us feel like VIPs and when we changed the plan to have a 6 course meal at the most perfect winery (Pacheca) he without question rearranged our wine tasting and itinerary to ensure our needs were met without delay. This was certainly a custom, once in a life time experience and we are so thrilled that we could experience it! You will not regret booking this world class custom experience.

We had such a lovely day - touring the Doura valley was on my bucket list for ages and I’m so glad we had such an excellent driver. The views were breathtaking and the wine tasting superb. I broke my budget ordering port to ship home - worth it!

If you have been thinking about booking this experience but haven’t yet decided - just do it! You will be so happy that you did!! We are on a cruise and really wanted to visit the Douro Valley region. Ricardo picked us up from our ship and curated a special day for us. Even though we were limited on time, he was able to make our experience feel relaxed and leisurely. The drive to the valley was comfortable, beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Ricardo as he told us about the area and also thoughtfully explained about the Portuguese culture, people and the history of wine and port making in the region. The Quinta that he took us to is Portuguese family owned and it is surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Our tastings were delicious, casual and not rushed. We thoroughly enjoyed their Port, Wine and the overall experience. Our lunch was also on the property and it was amazing! Thoughtfully prepared food that was absolutely delicious. We seriously enjoyed lunch as much as we enjoyed our tasting experience! We hope to someday return to the Douro Valley and I would book this tour with Ricardo again in a heart beat!

Our family loved our trip with Ricardo to the Douro Valley. He was a wonderful driver and guide. Both wineries were small and private with excellent tastings. The setting for lunch was breathtaking and the food was among the best we had in Portugal. The valley is beautiful and not to be missed. This exclusive experience was worth every penny!

Great trip, we were 4 adults, though a bit expensive considering the incremental cost of 1 additional adult vs. 2 or 3. The views were incredible and wineries (we visited two) fantastic. Our driver was extremely attentive and worked hard to enable us to fit in 2 winery visits (one very fast) and a boat ride. The driver also accommodated 2 hotel pickups and dropoffs, arranged via the manager the night before. Very responsive!! Regarding the 45 min river boat cruise, I would pass. Nice scenery but there is no live narration about what you're seeing and it wasn't worth the extra time and cost. In hindsight we would have spent more time at the second winery. Overall, a very good experience and the only way to see the Douro Valley in one day.

Reviews Our private tour with Ricardo from Maia Tours was exceptional. From the moment my sister and I got in the car, Ricardo regaled us with information and history of the regions we were visiting. During our tour Ricardo often checked to make sure we were comfortable. We did the Douro Valley Tour with wine tastings at Quinta da Pacheca, an elite Portuguese wine producer with some of the best wines of the region. The wine tastings were great and we were able place our orders and tour the grounds which are breathtaking. We then went to lunch at Quinta do Barrilário. It was a personalized experience in a new five star hotel owned by the Pacheca group. The hotel and restaurant overlook the Douro River with gorgeous views of the valley. The food was amazing and we got a quick tour of the hotel which we would love to return to. Great experience! The next day we headed to Lisbon with stops at Fatima and Obidos. Again, Ricardo planned the day perfectly and got us to Lisbon safely. Portugal is a must to visit. The country is beautiful and the people are warm, friendly, and more than happy to share their love of country with foreigners. We will be back!

Even though it rained on and off most of the day, Ricardo made sure to plan our trip so that we were able to visit two wineries and have a wonderful lunch. Ricardo was excellent in showing us around, providing a history of the Douro Valley and answering our questions. I highly recommend this tour.

Ricardo led us on an amazing day-long tour of the Douro Valley wine region. Following pickup in Porto we headed towards our first stop in Amarante, an idyllic little town with a beautiful historic chapel - the Igreja de Sao Goncalo. We had time for a short walk across the Tamega River bridge and had some mouth- watering delicious regional pastry at the Confeitaria da Ponte. Onward to the Quinta da Pacheca Winery for a very well curated wine tasting session and information on the history of winemaking in the region and its evolution to the present day. Our itinerary included enough time for a leisurely stroll around the vineyard and an appreciation of its unique architecture. A short drive thereafter to the Quinta Sao Jose da Barrilario for a lunch in their beautiful restaurant with an amazing view over the river and the valley. Our return trip included a stop in Pinhao to view their colorful train station and the river-level view of the valley. Maiatours does a great job of making the trip relaxing, flexible with options to choose an itinerary, and offering a very comfortable ride with very helpful information about the valley. Highly, highly recommended as a great way to experience the Douro Valley.
