Beskrivning

5 min

A favourable wind blows

“If one does not know to which port he is sailing, no wind is favourable." Thoroughly enjoyed this new walking tour. There are an abundance of them in the city so it takes a lot to stand out, and this did. Neil is a warm, friendly and engaging guide with deep knowledge and passion for the history he covers on this route. It was a really fun experience and I learned a lot, including terminology and some facts that really brought our surroundings to life. The tour points connected well from one to the next, forming an intriguing journey and accompanying story. It was easy to follow both physically and mentally (a bit vigorous for me but Neil happily adjusts to the group). There were enough interesting features in the surroundings to look at and imagine the history that was being narrated imposed on those settings, including the River Ouse and York Walls. Lots of opportunities for good photos. The geography of the storytelling was nice and clear and linked to even more places you could walk to outside the tour. There was some really nice flavour to the history from the details thrown in, and the authentic costume. The group was fairly small, which allowed for an intimate atmosphere and more time for questions. The tour lasted roughly 2.5 hours and was enjoyable throughout. The cost was very reasonable for such an insightful, flavoursome experience. Visiting the Roman Baths museum was a perfect way to round off for the more able and curious (it’s down some ancient stone steps). I've lived here twenty years and never been down, and I'm glad I got to see it. I’m now hoping to catch his Viking Walk too.

To do right away!

As a Roman, I couldn't miss this guided tour, and thank goodness I didn't! Fantastic experience that I would do again and again. Neil is a wonderful storyteller, and it is clear that he is truly passionate about what he does. We started from the museum gardens, a park in the center of York that has a long history, where we stopped for about 30 minutes. Here, Neil introduced us to Roman York (Eboracum!) and showed us various points of interest and many anecdotes. Then we moved further toward the center and walked along a section of the famous walls that surround the city. We toured the cathedral (watch out for ghosts 🤭) and finished in front of the statue of Constantine. Finally, Neil took us to a pub called The Roman Bath, which is also a museum. The entrance was included in the tour ticket price and it was truly worth it. Please keep in mind that the tour is in English! Fascinating experience, which guide Neil made super interesting, full of anecdotes but above all, incredibly fun! I know he also has a Viking tour that I will definitely book. Thank you, Neil!

Great trip around Roman York

Was expecting a group tour for myself and my wife but we were lucky enough to have basically a private tour as no one else had booked this morning. Neil knew his stuff, was very friendly and easy to listen and learn about York in Roman times. We had looked around York prior but Neil seemed to put the area into perspective as he showed us around. Tour ended up in the Bath complex under the Roman Bath Pub. Very interesting and could have listened to Neil for much longer than the 2 hours.

York Roman History Walk in June

I've done a few tours in various cities and can easily say, this is one of the best. Neil was informative, funny and entertaining. He demonstrated an excellent knowledge of local history and was skilled in putting the past across in a way that I could easily follow. Definitely recommend. Thank you!

Excellent informative tour.

A great way to learn about the Roman history of York. We went as a couple but there were families enjoying it too. We were pleasantly surprised to be shown places we didn't know were there even after visiting York several times. Neil kept the tour interesting and we also really enjoyed the Roman Baths.

A great experience

Having done The Original Viking Walk I was excited to do the Roman one too and it did not disappoint. The tour was about 2 hours long and filled with information. Neil was very knowledgeable but kept it light hearted and fun. I found it well worth the money and would highly recommend.
