Taormina ligger spektakulärt uppe på sidan av ett berg, och är en av Siciliens mest populära sommardestinationer, en elegant semesterort populär bland semestrar med höga rullar och de som vill ha en smak av siciliansk dolce vita. Taormina grundades på 4-talet f.Kr. och åtnjöt stort välstånd under den grekiska härskaren Gelon II och senare under romarna, men föll i tyst otydighet efter att ha erövrat av normannarna 1087. Dess reinkarnation som turistmål går till 1700-talet, då norra européer upptäckte det på Grand Tour. Bland fansen var DH Lawrence, som bodde här mellan 1920 och 1923.
Etna-berget är den högsta vulkanen i Europa och en av de mest aktiva i världen. Det är en imponerande storlek (mer än 3327 meter hög med en genomsnittlig basdiameter på 40 km) med utsikt över hela regionen. Dess spektakulära utbrott och dess eldiga lavaflöden har alltid väckt forskarnas intresse tillsammans med nyfikenheten från besökare från hela världen. Sedan 2013 finns Mount Etna i Unescos världsarvslista för sina geologiska särdrag av planetär relevans.
Den antika teatern (teatro greco, eller "grekisk teater") är byggd för det mesta av tegel, och är därför troligen av romerskt datum, även om planen och arrangemanget är i enlighet med de av grekiska teatrar snarare än romerska teatrar; varifrån det antas att den nuvarande strukturen byggdes om på grunden av en äldre teater i den grekiska perioden. Med en diameter på 120 meter (efter en utvidgning under 2000-talet) är denna teater den näst största i sitt slag på Sicilien (efter den i Syracuse); det används ofta för operatiska och teaterföreställningar och för konserter. Större delen av de ursprungliga sätena har försvunnit, men väggen som omgav hela kavén bevaras, och prosceniet med bakväggen i scenaen och dess bilagor, av vilka endast spår finns kvar i de flesta forntida teatrar, bevaras här i singular integritet och bidrar mycket till den pittoreska effekten, liksom till intresset, för ruinen. Från fragmenten av arkitektoniska dekorationer som fortfarande existerar lär vi oss att det var av korintens ordning och rikt dekorerade. Vissa delar av ett tempel är också synliga, omvandlade till kyrkan San Pancrazio, men byggnaden är av liten storlek.

Last week, we had a fantastic tour with Lucca from the cruise port in Messina. Lucca was waiting for us in the port in a comfortable Mercedes car. He easily accommodated my husband's needs as a person with limited mobility who uses a walker/rollator. At my request, he change our tour to take us to a winery on Mt. Etna since my husband would not be able to walk around on the mountain and see things. He also got us to Taormina before the crowds so we could see the beautiful city without so many people. It was the perfect combination of talking/explaining the history of the island, and leaving us alone. He also took us to some amazing viewpoints that you wouldn't get to see on a larger tour. It was really a fantastic day and made us both want to return to Sicily again so we could spend more time and really enjoy this beautiful place.

I was the organizer of our 8 person group, and having used "Rome In Limo" in the past, I had no doubt that we were in store for another fabulous tour. Our Tour Guide Luca, picked us up at the port right on time as expected. He was extremely knowledgeable and polite, and he was very accommodating to everyones needs. He took us to more of the small surrounding towns than i had expected, and in each one walked us through the history and highlights of each. He made sure that were all safe and comfortable during the entire tour. I feel that his outgoing personality is certainly reflective of the "Quality" tour guides that Rome In Limo employs for all of their tours. Having been on many other cruise tours over the years, I truly feel that Rome In Limo is the "Cadillac" of the tour providers. A rating of AAA+++ is not enough for this tour guide and his company. Well done Luca!

Our driver picked us up from the Port and showed us around Taormina! Absolutely Gorgeous! He knew all the right spots to stop and/or pick us up which we conveniently located and didn't waste time. Our stop at the Winery was awesome. We had a great view looking out to the mountains, the wine and charcuterie plates were pleasing to the eye and the palate. Roberto helped us make the most of our time at our stop in Messina.
