This was just an amazing experience. Ours was a little different cause the restaurant they usually use was closed cause they were on holiday. Still went shopping at the market for a few things but then went up a little bit in the hills to a lovely farm. Almost all of our food was from the farm and the market and it was such a lovely experience and day! Couldn’t have imagined it any better❤️

My wife and I did this excursion when we were on a cruise in August. We had debated going to Rome but figured it would be too hot in August and hard to jam it in within a handful of hours. We are so glad we chose to have this authentic cooking experience with such a wonderful chef, Mateo, as well as our guide, Olga. After a short shuttle ride from our cruise ship, Olga met us right at the exit of the shuttle stop. From there we walked to the market where we bought fresh ingredients for the meal we prepared. Along the way Olga gave some history of the area and we visited one of the churches (optional). We arrived at a restaurant where chef/owner, Mateo, walked us through and explained everything as we prepped and cooked the meal (gnocchi, tomato sauce, veal and tiramisu). It was great to have someone like Mateo who was so welcoming, kind and easy to hold a conversation with. We then had plenty of time to eat the meal, accompanied by wine and talk about different things with Olga. She then walked us back to where we met her and she would’ve been happy to show us other local areas of the city. If you’re looking for a low key, local and authentic excursion, then we’d definitely recommend this one!
The cooking class and shopping in the market was one of our favorite experiences of our vacation. The chef/restaurant owner provided a delicious meal and our guide Olga was very informative about the town and local customs.
This experience is a must do for anyone that loves to be in the kitchen, it was very hands on and you get to make everything from scratch. We really enjoyed the whole experience and atmosphere of the restaurant and kitchen, I would do it again for sure Mateo was a really great teacher for the four of us that were there.
We had a lot of fun on our market and cooking tour! We love markets, generally, and Olga (our guide) was clearly loved by many of the vendors who know her by name. We bought the ingredients for the lunch we cooked with Matteo at his restaurant Otto.Zero. The menu included gnocchi, sauce, tiramisu, bruschetta, and everything was delicious! It was just the two of us, which was good...only another 2 or 3 people maximum could fit comfortably in the kitchen...but it's definitely a worthwhile and fun activity for 2 couples or a family!
Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful review of your market and cooking experience! Visiting our local market with Olga really is special: she is deeply rooted in our community, and those genuine relationships with local vendors make picking out fresh ingredients feel like shopping with family. We are thrilled that you enjoyed the intimate kitchen setting at Otto.Zero, and that you and Chef Matteo cooked up such a fantastic feast together. Mastering fresh gnocchi, authentic sauce, and homemade tiramisù is no small feat, and we are so glad you loved every bite. Your note on the small, comfortable group size is spot on, as we love keeping these hands-on culinary experiences personal, interactive, and memorable. Thank you for recommending this adventure to couples and families, and we hope you recreate those Italian flavors back at home!
If you love good food and enjoy cooking, then you are just like us. It‘s always a pleasure to visit an Italian market. Together with our guide Olga we enjoyed shopping at the local market for the ingredients needed later on . Then while cooking in the kitchen of a restaurant Matteo, the chef himself gave us a lot of helpful hints and tricks how to make homemade Gnocchi with Tomato Sauce, Saltimbocca and Tiramisu. Time passed quickly, we had lots of fun and at the end we enjoyed all the delicious dishes we made ourselves. We felt very welcome and highly recommend this tour.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely and detailed review! There is truly nothing quite like hand-picking fresh ingredients at the vibrant local market before heading into the kitchen. We are thrilled that you had such a wonderful, hands-on experience mastering homemade gnocchi, authentic saltimbocca, and classic tiramisù. Both Olga and Chef Matteo will be delighted to read your warm words; they take great pride in making our guests feel like part of the family and sharing real Italian culinary secrets. We hope you will recreate these delicious dishes at home, and we would love to welcome you back for another culinary adventure whenever your travels bring you to Italy again!
We had an excellent time with Olga and Matteo. Visiting the market was an experience in itself and so fun. We then went to Matteo’s restaurant where we made some lovely dished plus dessert. There were 5 of us in total, 2 in our group and it was also enjoyed sharing the experience with some new friends. Well organized but yet no strict timetable or script. Very hands on and interactive.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! We are thrilled to hear you had such an excellent time with Olga and Matteo. It’s wonderful that you enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the local market, it really is the heart of our daily life here. We believe the best cooking happens when there’s a balance between professional organization and a relaxed, "no script" environment, so we’re glad you appreciated the interactive and hands-on flow of the class at Matteo's restaurant. One of our favorite parts of these tours is seeing "new friends" made over great food and a shared dessert! We will be sure to pass your compliments along to Olga and Matteo. We hope to welcome you back to our kitchen again someday! Warm regards,
This was an exceptional experience of local market shopping and culinary exploration with Chef Matteo, who owns a local restaurant, Otto.Zero, and his assistant, Olga. We were greeted by Olga at the shuttle stop who then led us through town to a local market where we picked up fresh vegetables and meat to use in preparing our meal. Chef Mateo instructed us on how to prepare gnocchi, tiramisu, and a wonderful veal dish- add to that wine and it was a spectacular cooking class that ended with a delicious lunch! This is a hands on class and If I could give it more stars I would!
Thank you so much for your glowing review and for the "extra stars"! It was a true pleasure having you with us. We are thrilled that you enjoyed the full experience, from the morning meetup with Olga to the vibrant atmosphere of our local market. Selecting fresh, seasonal ingredients is the foundation of Italian cuisine, and we’re glad you enjoyed that "behind-the-scenes" look at how we source our meat and vegetables. Chef Matteo was delighted to hear your compliments! He loves sharing the secrets of his kitchen, and it sounds like you mastered the gnocchi, veal, and tiramisu perfectly. There is nothing quite like enjoying a meal you've prepared yourself, especially when paired with good wine and great company! Sharing the authentic flavors of Civitavecchia is our passion, and reviews like yours make our work so rewarding. We hope to see you again for another culinary adventure in the future!
Our tour guide was Olga…wonderful experience and she was very knowledgeable of the area and its history. We have a private cooking class (4 hours) with chef Matteo at his restaurant, Otto.Zero. He has GREAT…taught us real Italian cooking and then we had lunch all together. Highly recommended!
Dear Guest, Thank you so much for your high recommendation! We are thrilled to hear that you had such a wonderful private experience with us. It is great to know that Olga provided a fascinating introduction to our city before your class. Chef Matteo was also delighted to host you at Otto.Zero! He truly enjoys teaching the secrets of "real Italian cooking," and we believe that sitting down to enjoy the lunch you prepared together is the perfect way to end the session.
