Tre decennier har gått sedan kommunismens bortgång. Trots den enorma tillväxt Rumänien har upplevt sedan dess är resterna av denna regim fortfarande märkbara. Det är därför de flesta aspekter av vardagen förvandlades av kommunismen: från den politiska klassen till den offentliga hälsovården till den urbana arkitekturen. Ta reda på de många chockerande berättelserna om hur livet var under kommunismen. Lär dig dessutom om den brutalitet med vilken detta system upprätthölls i Rumänien. Unirii Square ligger mitt i staden och designades under kommunismens sista fas i Rumänien. Spektakulärt tack vare sina fantastiska fontäner, korsas det också av Bukarests största aveny: den tidigare Victory of Socialism Boulevard. Att stå här och ta en promenad på boulevarden kommer att avslöja den megalomana vision som den rumänske diktatorn hade i beredskap för Bukarest.
Parlamentets palats är den näst största byggnaden i världen efter Pentagon och den dyraste administrativa byggnaden. Vi kommer att se denna byggnad från utsidan och få en sann känsla av dess gigantiska storlek. För detta krävdes enorma summor pengar, material och arbetsinsats. Dessutom skapades denna struktur genom att utsätta det rumänska folket för alla slags brister under 1980-talet. Du kommer att få höra hela historien om hur denna enorma byggnad gjordes, vad lokalbefolkningen tycker om den samtidigt som du har utsikt över den från olika vinklar. På andra sidan slottet står Academia Romana-byggnaden, en storskalig konstruktion i liknande stil. Den var avsedd för diktatorns hustru Elena Ceausescu. Liksom flera andra byggnader från 1980-talet var den dock bara halvfärdig. Numera är en stor del av den kvar i ruiner som en öm påminnelse om diktatorns megalomaniska vision av Bukarest
Du får reda på hur vissa kyrkor förstördes medan andra räddades på ett chockerande sätt under kommunisttiden. Kyrkor gömda bakom de utilitaristiska byggnaderna är en märklig syn som skildrar hur kommunistpartiet hanterade religion. Mihai Voda Churchh är en religiös plats från medeltiden som lyckligtvis överlevde rivningsvansinnet och är ett vittnesbörd om hur Bukarest såg ut tidigare.
Revolutionstorget är där den kommunistiska regimen började och där det hela slutade med folkets protester under revolutionen 1989. Du kommer att se byggnaden som inrymde Ceausescus kontor, balkongen där diktatorn hade sitt sista tal och platserna som såg det första massdemonstration i Bukarest. Här kommer du att förstå vad som hände med dem som demonstrerade mot totalitarism, historien bakom monumentet tillägnat dem och vad som hände i efterdyningarna av revolutionen.

I am deeply disappointed with this experience; it is definitely not worth the price. The tour guide (I believe his name was Stefan) had a terrible attitude. The entire time he was rushing us and didn't give us enough time to actually enjoy the places we visited. The icing on the cake was when he called me just to yell at me because I decided to stay behind instead of returning with the group. Since I couldn’t enjoy the castles properly, I explained to him that it was my birthday and I wanted to stay longer to explore. He rudely snapped back, asking if I thought he was going to wait for me until tomorrow. Terrible service altogether. He didn’t explain anything well; we paid for a Spanish tour, but he spoke in English most of the time, and when he did speak Spanish, it was barely understandable. On top of that, he was rude and completely lacked empathy.
I really enjoyed the Bucharest Under Communism: Life, Terror & Hope tour last weekend and it was a really great experience. The tour was very interesting and well explained, with lots of insights into what life was actually like during the communist period. Also as a bonus we got overall tips for the city (where to eat, where to go to etc) The guide made the history easy to understand and engaging, sharing stories that you wouldn’t get just by reading or visiting on your own. It really helps you see Bucharest or Romania from a local.

Stefania was an incredible guide from start to finish! She communicated before the tour, met the two of us (no one else booked on) in pouring rain (our choice, we were unable to do any other day, though this was offered to us) and Stefania was so knowledgeable, professional and kind. The 3+ hours tour flew by and we had a sense of the city of Bucharest and its people that no other experience in our visit had provided for us. Thankyou Stefania!!

We had already done the morning tour of the old city and in the afternoon we also did the “communism” tour. Laura was professional, nice and explained so many things that we did not know.
