EXPLICAÇÃO DO SISTEMA DE MISSÃO O que estamos prestes a ver é mais antigo que o Alamo. A maioria dos visitantes acredita que o Alamo é o início do Texas. Não é. O verdadeiro começo... é o sistema de missão. Entre 1718 e 1731, a Espanha construiu uma cadeia de missões ao longo deste rio. Não só igrejas. Comunidades. Fortalezas. Centros agrícolas. ferramentas políticas. A Espanha não estava construindo só para a religião – a Espanha estava construindo para controlar as terras. E aquela terra um dia se tornaria Texas. Essas quatro missões que estamos visitando hoje são tão historicamente importantes que em 2015 foram designadas Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO - unindo lugares como as Pirâmides do Egito e a Grande Muralha da China. E eles estão aqui em San Antonio. “Enquanto dirigimos, imagine esta região há 300 anos. Sem estradas. Sem skyline. Não Texas. Só rio, terras agrícolas e tribos indígenas. Espanha temia a expansão Francês da Louisiana.
A Missão Concepción foi concluída em 1755. É a mais antiga igreja de pedra não restaurada nos Estados Unidos. O que você vê aqui é quase original. Missão Espada é pequena. Silêncio. Simples. Mas contém uma das conquistas de engenharia mais impressionantes do Texas Espanhol - o Aqueduto Espada. Este sistema de irrigação desviou a água do rio para as terras agrícolas usando apenas a gravidade. E partes dele ainda funcionam hoje. Três séculos depois. Não é só arquitetura. A Mission San José foi fundada em 1720. No seu auge, mais de 300 habitantes indígenas viviam dentro dessas paredes. Não era só uma igreja. Era uma aldeia totalmente funcional. Blacksmith lojas. Granarias. Workshops. Vivendo quartos. Tudo dentro dessas paredes apoiou uma comunidade auto-suficiente. Tom put the role of the missions into perspective related to what were the larger influences of the time and then down to individuals that made significant differences to what happened. Incredible picture emerged of what happed and why. His 30+ years of working in the area and specifically with the missions was obvious. He also clearly stated and showed what was old, reconstructed and restored at each mission and reasons for the differences. One of the, if not the best tour I have taken.
Can you drive to each of the missions on your own? Yes! But you won’t get the history lesson we received on this tour. Tom, our tour guide was a park ranger and has an education in archeology and brought the history to life. We loved each mission and the peacefulness of the churches, were so glad we did this.

Perfect short trip to the four missions - conception, San Juan, San Jose and Espada, our guide Tom gave an interesting storyline of the different eras of the missions, the reasons for their establishment by the Spanish monarchy, the ways in which the friars established and run the missions and the community attached to it, the reasons for their success and decline, and the views of the natives towards the mission and the continuation of the traditions to modern times. The tour was perfect duration and the van was comfortable on a hot summer day. The churches were beautiful and learning about how successfully and not successfully it replicated European one was interesting!
Decided to venture beyond the River Walk area and thought this tour would be interesting. Our guide was Tom. Tom is a retired Ranger from the Parks Service and therefore had extensive knowledge of the locations visited. We found his narration extremely engaging and thought provoking. The entire tour felt as though is was a local friend taking you to some hidden gems. Really enjoyed the relaxed pace of the tour. Once Tom had completed his narration, there was time to explore each location instead of the traditional "let's keep moving" that is typical in tour companies. Would recommend this tour without hesitation. As a matter of fact, sent the link to a friend immediately following the tour. Thoroughly enjoyed!

I recently had the pleasure of a 3.5-hour small group tour of the historic missions in San Antonio, and it was an unforgettable experience. Our tour guide, Tom, was not only passionate about the history of the missions but also incredibly well-informed. We visited several missions, including Mission San José and Mission Concepcion. The intricate designs and beautifully preserved structures were beautiful. We had opportunities to engage with the history, including exploring some of the original structures and learning about the various cultural influences that shaped the area. Beyond just the missions themselves, Tom provided context about the local Native American tribes, Spanish colonization, and the role of these missions in the broader narrative of Texas history. The tour was well-organized, with comfortable transportation and clear meeting points. The pacing allowed us to soak in the beauty of each site without feeling rushed. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that I highly recommend if you are planning a trip to San Antonio.
Tom was an informed, respectful, and organized tour guide. He made sure that everyone on the tour was comfortable and that our questions were answered. He has a really deep knowledge of all of the sites we visited, which made a huge difference, as he was able to share information that I don’t think we could learn from just reading about the sites, listening to audio guides, or even talking to other tour guides who haven’t worked at the missions or lived here for as long as he has. We learned so much in a very short time and were transported in comfort to all of the sites we wanted to see. It was a great tour for a great price, and we appreciate having had the experience here in San Antonio!
