So cool to ride to the cave in a large SuperJeep! The guide, Kelly, did a great job mixing in fun along with education of the area (volcanic activity, geology, history of Iceland). We were the only group (9 of us) at the ice cave which helped make the tour feel more intimate. Recommend adding this to your itinerary if you are in Vik for a day!
My most important suggestion is to read the complete description of the tour before you book. I did not. I wished I had so I could have adjusted my expectations. Getting to the Ice Cave was thee experience. And it was great, including the walk up to the cave entrance. But the ice cave itself, is merely a photo opportunity. It's a very cool photo opportunity but that's about. It. The cave is a large hole in the side of the ice cap. It is a single file opening the goes back about 30ft. You walk to the back and then return to the opening and walk out. The information shared was fantastic during the drive and as well as when we prepared for entry. We learned a lot. But the actual cave was kind of a let down. Families with "tween" children should love this. It's very safe.
The cave is short, but very pretty. The leandscape is spectacular. At least we drove on the black beach, thas was fantastic, too.
The ice cave was cool, and the guide was very nice. But we drove for over an hour each way (beautiful landscape) to be in a cave for about 15 minutes that had water in it (so couldn't go in all of the way). I think it is horribly overpriced for what you get.
Entertaining and knowledgeable tour guide. Great cave experience. The ride there was equally exciting.
Our guide Gunnar was very knowledgeable and make the ride to the cave fun. The landscapes are amazing and we had enough time in the cave. On the way back we stopped for some pictures and as a bonus- drove on the black beach!
Our guide-driver was very pleasant and offered us many stops for taking photos. His comments were very rich. It was a superb experience.
An amazing experience. The trip to the cave was just as fascinating as the cave. Gunnar is a great story teller, charismatic and fun. He is also very knowledge about the geography and terrain.
We did the morning trip to the Katla ice caves with Davi, he was super knowledgeable and had great information. The ice cave was really awesome and afterwards because the weather was so nice we went to a couple other view points to see the volcanic deserts and glaciers. We drove back along the beach and Davi had plenty of stories about trolls and elves to keep us occupied!! It helped that the weather was beautiful and sunny and in the mid 50s. Overall a great trip and highly recommend Gravel Travel!
Guiide Marcello really made this tour a standout. Very friendly. Exceptionally knowledgeable about the geology, history and biology of Iceland. We even discussed the Little Ice Age and slowing Gulf Stream. We also felt very safe with his driving. If you book with them, try to get Marcello
