This is an extraordinary tour, offers everything it promises, but isn’t going to be available in the long term unless there are major changes. To get to the ice caves you need to put crampons over your hiking boots and then scramble up a landscape which is already crumbling. There will come a moment when the soft soil can no longer bear the weight of a body. It’s already deteriorating visibly. So go while you still can.
It was an amazing experience. The views were spectacular and uniqe. The guide was wonderful, very knowledable, funny and professional. I recommend this to everyone.
Their website states that the difficulty level is easy & it is NOT easy. I’m in good shape, am an experienced hiker & do similar excursions all of the time when I travel & I’d say it is at least moderate. Marketed this as easy is very deceptive. Because the difficulty level was misrepresented some of the members of my group had to turn back & sit in the van & wait for us. When I brought this up, they didn't take any ownership. In fact, it took several emails over several weeks for them to respond and basically say the conditions are not their responsibility. In addition, our guide barely told us anything & when he did, quite frankly it was boring. More importantly, he never checked on the group to see if any was having difficulty or to see if we were all still there. The cave was cool, but overall this was disappointing and not worth the money! While I was in Iceland I did other tours with Artic Adventures & Glacier Lagoon Tours and both were great!
Of all the things we’ve done on our family vacation to Iceland. This was by far the most amazing and thrilling for all ages. Our guy, John reassured and kept us comfortably safe on the entire journey…. Plus he has lots of humor along the way. We highly recommend this adventure.!
Amazing experience at the Katla Ice cave. Our guide Hawk was wonderful. He is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly. We did have a great time
This was an amazing experience. The majority of the time it felt like the 8 of us plus our driver were the only people in this vast landscape - black sand, bright blue sky, green hills. Incredible. Ari was an *excellent* guide - we learned a lot of interesting information about the geology and history of the island. We had a bit of extra time and a willing group so we were able to take a short hike before the ice cave - which is really a tunnel! with the most incredible blue. The drive across the black sand with the ocean crashing to Icelandic music he selected - perfect. This is a Must Do.
We had so much fun touring the ice cave and learning more about the glacier! Our guide, Yakov, was friendly and knowledgeable. Our kids loved him, he made the tour super enjoyable for them. I’d highly recommend this tour to families!
We had Gabriel (Gaby) as our guide and he was AWESOME. My mom isn’t super mobile/stable and he was so great to help her over anything somewhat iffy. He gave us great information on glaciers, ice caves, how Katla glacier has changed, and so much more. High energy, super knowledgeable, and fun to be around. The ice caves were unbelievable. The hike up there was relatively easy, but a little steep at parts, but worth every second of it. Stunning colors, views, and strength. Loved this tour so much!
We had a great visit to the ice cave with our driver Yakov (Jacob). There were a total of 3 vans running on the tour, and they did a great job of spacing the groups so that we had plenty of time and space. The drive was a fun little roller coaster over the gravel roads from Vik to the Glacier. We had a great down hill run which was very exciting. Throughout the drive Yakov share information about what we were seeing and what we would be doing once we arrived. Upon arrival we walk a little distance to the foot of the Black glacier. We put on crampons to give us good footing. Yakov picked up a pick ax, which we learned was to help with path modifications as needed. The path has a rope that runs between stakes that really helps with going up and down. There are some very steep areas and water crossings that could be very difficult. Yakov was a great guide and provided the right amount of assistance based on each person's needs. He was very attentive to each person and made sure each person could participate. This tour was very worthwhile and I highly recommend
Otherworldly…stepping out of the van felt like we were dropped into another world. We put on our crampons and walked up the trail to the cave which sparkled an amazing blue against the black and white contrast of the volcanic ash covered glacier. We learned a lot and would highly recommend!
