We had an amazing two days exploring Kathmandu and the surrounding area with our guide Nishan, and it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Nepal. On our first day, we started early and drove up towards Nagarkot to enjoy the mountain scenery before continuing to the beautiful Changu Narayan Temple. Afterwards, we stopped at a local restaurant where we had some food and drinks while enjoying a fantastic view over the Kathmandu Valley. Later we returned to Kathmandu and visited Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple. Besides exploring the temple and seeing all the monkeys, we were lucky to experience something much more meaningful. We joined a Buddhist monk prayer and condolences for the victims of the recent floods, which was a very memorable and emotional experience. Afterwards, our guide also showed us some local artistic and handicraft shops. On the second day, our guide met us directly at our hotel at 9 am. We first visited Pashupatinath Temple, where we were able to learn about Hindu traditions and respectfully observe the cremation ceremonies taking place along the river. We also met some of the local sadhus/yogis and took some great photographs. From there we travelled through the old streets of Patan and explored Patan Durbar Square and the Patan Museum. After walking around the old town, we stopped for a coffee before continuing towards Kathmandu Durbar Square. Our guide took us to a local tea shop where we bought some Nepalese teas to bring home, then we explored the old palace and the square itself. We finished the sightseeing in a perfect way by sitting down on Durbar Square and enjoying some delicious momos. What we really appreciated was that the tour never felt rushed or like we were simply being moved from one tourist attraction to another. We had time to take photos, ask questions, stop for food or coffee, and experience some parts of everyday Nepali life along the way. Our guide Nishan was friendly, knowledgeable and very easy to spend time with. He explained the history, religion and traditions behind the places we visited and helped us understand much more about Nepalese culture than we would have discovered by ourselves. We would definitely recommend him to anyone visiting Kathmandu who wants a relaxed, interesting and more personal experience of the city and its culture. Thank you for two fantastic days in Nepal! Also a big thanks to the organisator Mani, which this was possible!
