it's worth it because seeing pelicans is amazing but you have to know that there is 3h30 car go and such return. our guide was on his phone or sleeping on the boat so I might as well say that I saw a blongios and a kingfisher by my observation and not thanks to him.
It was actually a 4 hour drive each way to reach the Delta, making it a long day. It didn't help that the temperature was very high, nudging 40C, although if we had stayed in Bucharest it would have been higher. The a/c in the minibus could not cope, so it was unpleasant on the way back. Our guide was very good, but the boatman was not interested in wildlife and often approached too fast, so the wildlife took off, and he moved on fairly quickly. We suspect he was newish to the job, getting lost and having a mate show him the way back to the main channel. We did see pelicans swirling in the sky and later 2 of them on the water quite close. There were plenty of egrets and herons. Small birds like kingfishers were difficult to see when he wasn't prepared to stop. Once we had lunch, there was no stopping at all. It would have been much better to stay locally a few nights and do the tour on kayaks that would not frighten off the birds.
We didn't see as many birds as expected because the river level was so low - another boat like ours got stuck in the mud trying to go down a narrow creek. Having said that, we did see an eagle, pelicans and some other birds. The highlight was the delicious lunch - 80 lei extra, but well worth it - sturgeon soup, then deep fried local carp and catfish, with wine. It's a long drive to get to the delta, so it's a long day. Our guide Ali did a good job, driving well, keeping us informed, telling stories.
I wanted to share my thoughts on a recent trip I took to Bucharest. If you love nature, this destination is truly a gem that you shouldn't miss out on. The landscapes are breathtaking, and the experience goes far beyond just beautiful scenery and a-lot of different birds
It was an unforgettable day! The timing, despite being tight, did not affect the quality of the experience enhanced even by Alin, the Guide, who favored us in every way. The immensity of the Danube and the long navigation, initially more sustained and then slower, allowed us to immerse ourselves in the fauna and flora of this ecosystem that seems to have kept its balance intact. The bright day introduced us in the autumn season as in a dream that was waiting to come true. Also excellent value for money
