Excellent day out of the city. Giorgios our guide was amazing - really knowledgeable of the area and history. Philippi is such an interesting place to visit. Well worth the €10 entrance fee. We didn’t pay the additional €10 to get into the museum. We then went to Kavala to have a look around and climbed up to the castle. The views are spectacular from up there. It was a Sunday so a lot of the places were closed but there was enough going on to get food and drink. We then went to a beach area which was sandy and with clear water. It was a little busy because it was Sunday but we still got sun loungers and food ok at Mellow. I would recommend this trip if you fancy doing something different and getting to a beach as well.
Generally a good trip but it was all a bit rushed. Philippi was a large site and we only got 1 hr there because some of the people wanted to visit an extra site at the Baptist church. Kavala was interesting but again was very rushed.
Giorgios extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. Despite the hot weather, we were able to see the breathtaking sights of ancient Philippi and Kavala as intended
Exceptional tour but very tiring. The Phillipi site is amazing and very well maintained. Kavala is very nice. Half our party stayed at the beach for swimming and the rest of us walked around kavala then picked up the swimming guests on way back. To do this tour wherever you stay the meeting point is veneloz statue, Aristotle Square.
This tour should have included entrance into Philippi and a guided tour there. The guide lead us hurriedly up the top of a hill in Kavala but then kind of dumped us there.
Philippi was great, site is sign posted in English and Greek. Needed another half hour to an hour there in order to see the museum. Kavala town is a good place for a lunch break but otherwise has little to offer. Would have preferred to stay longer at Philippi. Too early in the year to swim in the sea, no food, chairs, or anything open in April. And the water is cold. The guide and driver were very nice and helpful. Bus was comfortable and had WiFi. Price for tour is reasonable. One thing, the music played on the bus was not very good, second rate American rock. Please play classic Greek or nothing.
It was the perfect first tour experience in Kavala. John was insightful and a very calm guide. He allowed us to explore at our own pace and that was just right for us. He’s is a very good guide and made us feel at ease.
This trip topped off my 3rd and final excursion while visiting Thessaloniki. I greatly appreciated Yannis’s knowledge throughout Phillipi and Kavala. He was gracious and patient with all the questions! It was an added surprise to be able to visit Lydia’s baptism site since it was the winter season and we weren’t going to go swimming!
I was really interested in visiting Kavala the birthplace of Mohamed Ali the founder of modern Egypt but unfortunately there wash enough time to enter his home which is a museum now Also the ruins of Philippi were worth visiting
I went on this trip only because it went to Philippi. There are surprisingly not many day trips out of Thessaloniki that go there, which is a shame. Kavala I did not care about because it is a modern city whose historical significance belongs to more modern periods. I wish the trip spend a bit more time a tPhilippi (say 30 min-60 min) to allow us to climb up to the acropolis, since that affords a much better view of the plain of Philippi and the site of the Battle of Philippi (42 BCE), which was another reason I wanted to go to the ancient city. I did not feel there was not much to do in Kavala unless you just want to eat at cafes and wander around yet another half-modernized Greek city. The citadel and Muhammad Ali Pasha museum were interesting, but not worth going all the way out from Thessaloniki to see.
