Expect the unexpected and allow spare time!

This tour is definitely not for the faint-hearted. If you're planning onward travel, make sure you allow extra time and prepare for the unexpected. I built in a two-day buffer before my flight to Rwanda to see the gorillas, and I ended up using every minute of it. Thanks to the incredible efforts of my tour operator, I only just made my flight! Our journey included three punctures (with only two spare tyres available) and the complete cancellation of a domestic flight. During our third puncture, we spent over 6½ hours waiting for assistance in the middle of nowhere, with no mobile reception, temperatures exceeding 45°C, and dwindling water supplies while travelling through the Danakil Depression towards Semera. Despite these challenges, the trip was absolutely unforgettable. The landscapes and experiences were unlike anything I've seen anywhere else in the world. The Simien Mountains were breathtakingly beautiful. Seeing the endemic Gelada baboons in their natural habitat was a highlight; they were fascinating to watch and completely non-aggressive. Our small group consisted of just myself and one other traveller, accompanied by five Ethiopian crew members: our guide, driver, chef, sous chef, and an armed security officer. I never once felt unsafe. On the contrary, everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. We were also exceptionally well fed—we ate like kings! The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are truly extraordinary. The fact that these remarkable structures were carved entirely from solid rock is astounding, and the history behind their creation is equally fascinating. Erta Ale was my first volcano, and I absolutely loved the experience. Be sure to bring a scarf or equivalent to help with the sulphur fumes and smoke. The landscape feels almost lunar, as though you've landed on another world. If possible, don't miss sunrise at the volcano. With fewer people around and less smoke in the air, the atmosphere is surreal and makes for some wonderfully eerie photographs. One thing to note: camping here is real camping, not glamping. You'll be sleeping outdoors on a mattress under the stars, with no tent and no toilet facilities. It's a genuine wilderness experience. As for the Danakil Depression, words barely do it justice. After feeling like I was on the Moon at Erta Ale, the Danakil felt like standing on Mars. The colourful sulphur springs genuinely display the incredible colours seen in photographs—there's no editing required! Safety standards are minimal, however, so take extreme care around the springs, where temperatures can exceed 100°C. The sunrise over the salt pans and the opportunity to float in a naturally formed saltwater pool created some of the most strangely beautiful and isolating moments of the trip. This is not a heavily travelled destination; you won't see endless streams of vehicles passing by. Given the complete lack of landmarks, it would be impossible to self-drive safely in this region. Following the tour, I discussed some of the logistical challenges with the operator and suggested communication improvements such as satellite navigation or radio systems. Unfortunately, these are currently not permitted by the government. One practical tip: don't bring binoculars to Ethiopia. Mine were confiscated on arrival and held until departure, costing me US$40 in storage fees. Also be aware that there are five flights in this tour - Addis to Gondar, Gondar to to Lalibela, Lalibela to Addis, Addis to Semera and Semera to Addis. You are expected to pay for two and the tour operator pays for three. It wasn't very clear in the notes. Boarding passes are very last minute too, so try not to stress! This was without question one of the most adventurous—and at times risky—trips I have ever undertaken. Yet the rewards were immense: extraordinary landscapes, unique experiences, and the warmth and hospitality of the Ethiopian people. It is a journey I will never forget.

Perfect

Had the most incredible time in the Danakil Depression and Gheralta! The landscapes are truly magnificent, unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Our guide, Aman, was exceptionally knowledgeable and spoke impeccable English. Chef Hadgu prepared some genuinely delicious meals throughout the trip, and our driver, Mowael, was incredibly patient, skilled, and reliable, even in challenging conditions. Everything was organized seamlessly, and I couldn’t recommend ETT enough. An unforgettable experience from start to finish! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Disorganised and poor value for money

Disorganised, poor value for money, rude guide, long long journeys on rocky roads but amazing sights of the Danakil Depression were breathtaking. This tour is poor value for money! I paid £1,153.63 ($1500) plus, my internal flights which weren’t refunded, for the 6 day tour expecting a small group experience. For 3 days of the tour there were 11 people, none native English speaking. The schedule was disorganised, for example the first day of my tour I had to wait 3 hours in a roadside cafe for another guest to arrive which meant I was unable to do the hike on my itinerary in the Simien mountains which was hugely disappointing as we had made a 6 hour round trip to do this. Different people joined for different parts of the tour. On day 4 I was told to be ready to leave at 9:30am then at 8:30 told we were leaving at 9am. I didn’t get time for breakfast then We didn’t leave until 9:30 anyway. When we were on excursions it was very disorganised, running out of time so having to hike very fast in high temperatures to make up time. The itinerary completely changed for 10 people to accommodate a late arrival. The quality of accommodation is appalling. In the hotels in Gondar, Lalībela and overnight in Semera. Taps not working, wires hanging from the wall, in the bathroom there was a missing ceiling tile with a pipe sticking out which dripped water into a bucket on the floor, nearly overflowing. Camping was a mattress on the floor in the open air without a sleeping bag, pillow or toilet. Due to the poor organisation and communication I expressed my concerns about making it back for my 5:35pm flight on the last day as this was a 7 hour drive from where we were staying with the changed itinerary The guide publicly humiliated me and told me to stop interrupting her when I tried to establish what time we were leaving. The group leader in Semera was rarely present and did little effective communication or interaction with the group. When she did accompany the group She was more interested in having her photo taken than looking after guests, I heard her saying to everyone ‘ let me get front and centre as I’m the boss lady’ When we hiked up the mountain in the dark at sunrise she went so quickly I couldn’t follow her footsteps and fell over. I’m an experienced hiker and asked her several times to slow down and check in on the group. After a long day getting up at 5am We were supposed to have snacks in the late afternoon but they didn’t materialise and she disappeared. She seemed to prefer smoking and hanging out with the guides and drivers than looking after guests. Booking through viator I paid twice as much as others on the tour. I’ve booked many tours through viator which have all been excellent. This one was overpriced, disorganised. disappointing and the Semera guide rude. The drivers in Semera were excellent - very long drives on rocky precarious roads. The guide in Lalibela was also excellent. Very knowledgeable and courteous. The experience in Gondar was difficult and intimidating with different people jumping in and out of the vehicle at different points on the journey, shouting and arguing and at one point we forcefully had to close the door and drive off. You will find it normal to be accompanied by armed security but the sights in Lalibela and the Danakil Depression were worth the risk.

This one was truly one of the best!

We were so impressed in this our second trip with Ethio Travel and Tours. Connections and transportation were always ready. Guides were adventuresome, but not careless. The adventure and fun were as good as we hoped for for we adequately-conditioned. Will definitely look to Ethiopia again! Being able to surround yourself in their culture was pretty eye-opening. I will never regret going on that trip no matter how hard it was to say goodbye. Not only did I get to see, taste, touch, and hear many, many unforgettable things there; it changed me as a person. I highly recommend going if you are interested and able.

One of the best travel experiences in my life - probably THE best

This trip was the birthday present for my 18 year son. He chose the destination and it was beyond all expectations. The organisation was flawless. Rahwa from HQ did full coordination and nothing was left as a surprise. And all staff did a wonderful job. Open to any proposal, flexible, informative, accommodating, .... The destination is one of the most beautiful nature I have experienced after having visited 64 countries. This trip is full of superlatives.

The excursions were excellent, without exception.

We had a great trip in a beautiful country. From the historical Rock Hewn churches of Lalibela, The Amazing Simien mountains to the Danakil, the excursions were excellent, without exception. From the beginning, our travel designer had a good sense of what we would like and matched us with the right activities.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip so much.

The whole trip was very well organised. The travel agent at the ETT office, put together a very comprehensive itinerary that covered all the places I wanted to see and more. The our guide and the driver were very courteous and helpful and struck the right balance between being informative and not engaging in conversation. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip so much.
